Now that Quake 3 source code is almost out, why can’t we put our hands on Wolfenstein code also
It has a lot of single player functionality that we missed in Quake 3 arena source code.
Wolfenstein source code would be the best thing to happened after the Quake 3 source code and would give a big bush for single player focused development using the Quake 3 engine.
Isn’t it time for Wolfenstein source code
We will have to wait another year or 2. So that the time between the Q3S release and the RTCWS is equal to the time between the release of Q3 and RTCW.

sais who …lol
Nobody ever said anything about releasing the RtCW or ET engine source code afaik, and I wouldn’t count on it ever being released (though you can always hope).
because GPLing something doesnt retroactively apply to derivative works.
otherwise, COD, JK2, MOHAA etc would have to be GPLd too. i’m pretty sure that won’t happen.
after all, Quake1/Quake2 were GPLd and we didn’t see HL/CS get GPLd now did we?
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released on 20th December 2001, and we are nearly 4 years from that date, they have sold tons and tons of this game (more then expected as actvision stated in the financial report), and releasing the source code with a new budget release of the game might post sales once again.
Besides id is not licensing Quake 3 engine any more (the last time was in 2004), what would they do with the source code if they have the mighty Doom3 engine which is even enhanced in the nearly to be released Quake 4 and the upcoming Quake wars.
In short they have newer and much advanced technology that they won’t even lock at Wolfenstein code or think of licensing it, if they don’t release it then they would force fans to reprogram every single functionality from A to Z.
For me, I don’t play online games, I love single player games and I really would like to build my own single player MOD, but I am not a programmer, and I am still building single player quake 2 maps.

Its not about divertive work or not
JK2 is owned by lucas arts
MOHAA is EA’s
HL/CS is valve’s
But for Wolfenstein, the original Wolfenstein is id’s game, the engines is id’s and Return to Castle Wolfenstein is id’s production
Splash damage only did the development for id
I see that the whole thing is under id’s control, which means that if they want to release the code then nothing can stop them from doing so
The community should push id, and as I know id and carmack really cares for the community
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was produced by Activision and developed by Gray Matter (SP) and Nerve (MP). Splash Damage developed Wolfenstein Enemy Territory based on RtCW.
I don’t know who holds the rights to the engine modifications, but I do have a faint memory of someone from SD saying that it’s not up to them to decide this.
Carmack also said there is some work involved in releasing the source (removing PB, making sure everything builds) so you really can’t expect him to release every “derived” engine even if he would want to and even if he does have the right to do it.
the day the q3 source is released will be the blackest day in the history of gaming.
That’s the way (trying myself).
But imho it would be nice, when id releases the Wolf source when RtcW2 is coming out (similar to Quake3 source
Quake4).
Which is why, if you had licensed the Q3 engine you would also get
the benefit of all the technology advancments that id has made through the development of QUAKE III: Team Arena and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, released in November of 2001. This includes all of the AI, scripting, camera and effects that were added in the creation of Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
