Is there a cover system?

(Caemgen) #1

I was wondering, as you can slide to or jump over obstacles using S.M.A.R.T., if there will also be a ‘sticky’ cover system, like in Killzone 2?

And if so, will the ENTIRE moveset be available in competitive multiplayer?
Because that, my friends, would be AWESOME.

Quick unrelated suggestion: Please add the ability two swap the R1 / R2 and L1 / L2-buttons for the PS3-version. Using R1 to fire seems to be the trend for shooters on Sony’s console these days, but I for one like using R2 better as I’ve purchased Gioteck’s Real Triggers for my controller (which are great!)…

We don’t have a “sticky” cover system, but as you may have seen in previews, we do have leaning, even on the console version.

SMART is the cover system. You can slide and climb behind cover.

And so far there isn’t really a large move-set, it may look like it is so but all the special moves fall under the SMART button.

I see. Well, great!

But what I meant was: Will the SMART-system be exactly the same as in singleplayer/co-op, because in Killzone 2 they removed the cover system in multiplayer, which really sucked.

It’s exactly the same (multiplayer, co-op and singleplayer are the same game, just with AI players filling out the enemy team or your teammates). But SMART isn’t ‘sticky’ - if you’re going to slide behind something for cover you need to aim at it and stop the slide when you get there yourself. It won’t pull you in or prevent you from moving away.

Yeah the SD guys heavily hinted at how horrible those things are in interviews.

So I guess no “stop and pop” then?
As in: You slide into cover behind a small wall using SMART, hold the SMART button down (to make sure you will stay down in a crouching position), pop up by using the aim button, shoot, and duck for cover again (by releasing the ‘aim’-button). Or something like that.

(madness) #8

I don’t think it’s like that…or I hope it isn’t :stuck_out_tongue:

(Caemgen) #9

Why not? :stuck_out_tongue:

(tokamak) #10

Smart is more meant to have more freedom in mobility and isn’t like Gears of War as such. You hold the button to get to a place, not to stay there.

(Caemgen) #11

Yeah, you’re right…

It would make much more sense if there would be a seperate button for a ‘sticky’ Gears of War-like cover system. If there will be one in the game, that is.

(tokamak) #12

There’s no such thing in this game. Don’t get me wrong, I like how it works in Gears of War, but the last two ET games had a much faster pace. SMART speeds this even up more, an actual sticky cover system slows it down.

It would also give a bigger advantage to defenders than to attackers.

That actually makes sense. Heh.

Well, as long as you can chrouch and prone, I’m happy.
Really looking forward to this game!

(tokamak) #14

You can slide, don’t forget that one. Who needs cover if you can slide under a spray of bullets while blowing someone’s head off?

(H0RSE) #15

I don’t think they will have prone. Just jump, crouch, sprint, and SMART. You hold down SMART to use it, and tap it to slide. It also take into account your velocity. so if you walk up to a table and use, you will just climb over it, if your running at it and use it, you will vault over, or slide across the top, without loosing momentum.

(Metal-Geo) #16

Yes. Very effective… If the other team can’t aim for crap.
:stroggbanana:

I’ve always been in favor of simply crouching for cover. The whole sticky system always seems to get in my way. (Frustrating in Gears of War, Uncharted, etc…) Each game likes to come up with its own idea of unsticking. Feh.

And Killzone 2’s cover system is plain annoying, for the fact you have to hold crouch, hold the moving analog stick, aim and shoot. 4 finger task, just to shoot from cover. That’s just… annoying, man. So so so annoying.

(H0RSE) #17

I also am not a fan of cover systems. Just give me a crouch button and I’m good.

(Caemgen) #18

That sounds great!

I am hopefuly that both Push-to-Crouch and Toggle-Crouch will be bindable
Not just one or the other
