Is the minimap useful ?

(jazevec) #1

I remember using minimap a lot in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. In particular I remember adjusting it (zoom + -) each time a spawn or map changed. It was so useful. I even had a key bound to fullscreen map and it wasn’t just for the mortar.

Fast forward to today. I don’t feel like the minimap is useful at all. I hardly ever look at it, and when I do I find it’s too far away from action to warrant such distraction. Also, DB has teammate indicators (wallhack for teammates), and that’s one of things I used minimap for.

Supposedly a good Vasili can throw a heartbeat sensor behind him, and see detected enemies on minimap. I don’t have that merc and I dislike snipers, so I can’t say.

Is there anyone who frequently uses the minimap ? How is it useful ? When ?

I use it, just to check if the secondary objectives are blown or in my teams control.

Same for the stationary ammo creates.

(Faraleth) #3

In the default position? No, I never even remembered to look at it. xD

However, I have a custom HUD and so it’s much easier to see at the bottom of my screen in the center, so I use it occasionally.

I have mine at the bottom center right of my HUD and I made it so that it doesn’t rotate so that it might be useful…but I’ve just never found the need to use it. I used to think that ammo dumps should be shown on it but with the addition of ammo dumps showing an ammo icon a few patches ago that’s not even a way to make it semi-useful for new players/new maps.

(MarsRover) #5

It is useful. Custom HUD + zoom out = I can always see where my team is. Super useful when playing medic.

(jazevec) #6

And this is what I’ve been hoping for. Medic is probably my favourite class.

(Drac0rion) #7

Got the map bottom center with a custom HUD, never really notice it tho. Loved it back in W:ET, but here it’s just too hard to notice, wish there was a button to bring out the whole map as well sometimes, just to get a good look over the objectives.

(3N1GM4) #8

I only use it at spawns to see which route my team is going while I sprint off ahead… and usually back track as I guess wrong lol.

(kibloy) #9

It also shows downed but revivable team members with a separate icon, very helpful.

(jazevec) #10

But wait - if teammates are close, you can see the icons through walls. If they aren’t, they will probably either respawn or be gibbed before you get to them. So, what’s the point ?

(pumpkinmeerkat) #11

Maybe only recon mercs should have a mini map. Could be considered a passive ability.

(LCTR) #12

I disable the minimap for performance - I get no micro-stutters when it’s removed.

It’s useless for normal play imo, but semi-useful in Execution mode.

(kibloy) #13

you can quickly look down at the map instead of having to do a 360 and guess by the icon location and size where they possibly are
also, sparks

(Telzen) #14

I use it to see what my team is up to. Seems pretty useful to me.

(wolvie) #15

@LCTR how does one disable the minimal?

(messiah) #16

Whats the point of looking at to find your teamates, when it shows a upside triangle indication where they are on the screen? I thought about using it to get a better indication of where my teamates are fallen but again it already shows me on the main screen instead of looking down at the minimap.

(B_Montiel) #17

The minimap have a noticeable impact on performance, even with a good config. Which surprised me to say the least when I fiddled with it. So I removed it from my HUD with no major drawbacks. It just doubles information that are already shown through objective indicators.

@wolvie go in your shooterUI.ini, look for the “[ShooterGame.SGUIHUDMiniMap]” section and then :
m_MiniMapWidth=0
m_MiniMapHeight=0

you can turn everything off in this section if you don’t use the global map available when tabbing.

(Mister__Wiggles) #18

With 3d spotting available if you have a competent vasili its pretty much useless to me. With out a vasili though I still don’t need it. With the small number of maps and my high play time I know where people usually hangout.

Sorry, but i can’t delete this comment box in my smart phone.

Dirty bomb is just too much of a fast paced game for the mini map to be useful.
Everything you see on the mini map can already be seen through indicators.

I legit don’t see it’s purpose, so I took it off.
