Is it worth buying Brink now?

(Abrax) #1

I came close to buying Brink when it came out but was put off by the thousands of poor reviews and complaints.

I’m considering it again but I’d like to know if the various issues such as lag have been fixed yet? Also, are there still a decent amount of online players still on? I’ve read a few reports of people saying the online population is sparse these days. I would be getting it on Xbox.

Thanks!

(Codine) #2

Only if you can pick it up for $20 or less. The game hasn’t changed much at all since launch and there’s been no announcement for any future support for this game except for a balance patch.

Also definitely no if you get it on xbox, this game is 100% online. The single player is just bot matches. Last I heard the 360s population is basically non existent anymore.

(gooey79) #3

It’s no longer in the X360 top 20 Live games and hasn’t been for a while. Older games like Forza 3, Fallout: New Vegas and Left 4 Dead 2 are there though.

That said, the X360 guys will let you know there’s still people to play alongside. No evidence to suggest the numbers are increasing but should be enough to get a game.

Based on my experience of PS3, lag can be hit or miss but for the best part; it’s improved greatly over what it was at release. I will therefore assume it’s similar on X360 in that respect.

I’d say give it a go sub-£20. Not a title worthy of full price, in my opinion.

I say Yes for sure, but then I enjoy the single player too…

  • it’s pretty cheap in many places so you’re not risking much.

(RabidAnubis) #5

Go for $20 or less and buy used.

Of course the game is 100% online. Unless you were trying to mean No on the 360 if you don’t have XBL Gold, then your post makes a little more sense. I took a break for a few days and I’m still finding full games during peak hours, and half to near-full games during non peak hours. The only time games are pretty much empty for me is late at night, usually past midnight PST. When I get into an XBL Party with Wolf/Neph, even when we start our own game up, it fill up generally within minutes.

It was never worth buying! DON’T BUY!
Feeding ducks with your money is less wasted than buying this game. Additionally no one plays it anymore, apart of 550 casuals and a bunch of console players.
Nothing got fixed, so save your money for the really good games this fall. You know what I talk about

Btw, I am excited to read the first retarded comment from a Brink fanboy to my post

(BioSnark) #8

If you’re unsure, I’d say rent it and see if you both like the mechanics and can find games frequently enough to enjoy it.

Call me a fanboy, I don’t care. I like the game. So what?

What I want to know is, if you dislike the game so much, why are you even here? I’m assuming by your console comment that you’re on the PC.

I can understand disliking the game from a PC aspect, since everything said about the PC version points to being a “Console game Ported to the PC” which kinda sucks, but I digress.

(Steinernein) #10

If you’re looking for a lower skill ceiling casual FPS then Brink is the way to go, and I’d only pay 10 dollars for it at most =/

Otherwise, save for BF3 or maybe get Space Marine (different genre I know!) or Red Orchestra 2 .

-Lots of empty servers
-Community is practically dead
-No team balance so you will often find yourself in games where it’s 2v8
-Single player AI is awful
-Multiplayer ends in spawn camping a lot due to stacked teams
-Can’t switch body types in games (if you want to switch from light character to medium size, you will have to leave your current game and go to the main menu)
-Can’t change weapon attachments or abilities in game (again you’re going to have to leave the game and head to the main menu)
-Lacks of maps
-You will have to pay another $10 for the new map DLC that was promised free, but later changed to paid DLC
-Bad HUD design, often your screen will be covered in little text boxes and images

I’m sure I’m forgetting some things, but I bought it for $25 and felt it was worth about $10-15 at most, and that’s including all the DLC (maps and character packs). Hell no at $50+$10 for DLC, that price is a joke for what you get.

I got only experience with the PC version (which I dont play anymore) but the OP is asking for Xbox advise and so Id like to post a little OT with communications:
Now lets compare the two posts here:
The first interesting one:

On the first we have a relativly long list with negative impressions of the user that many in this forum share and a couple of true facts in the end of the list. This list is followed by a personal statement of how the user felt after buying and what his impressions are about the price.
This was a well put criticism, very negative but in no way off due to the personal references. It was in no way invasive and is an opinion, that can stand for its own. Thats how you do it!

Here come the second one:

[QUOTE=Rex;376849]It was never worth buying! DON’T BUY!
Feeding ducks with your money is less wasted than buying this game. Additionally no one plays it anymore, apart of 550 casuals and a bunch of console players.

I love this one! We start out with reading a headline that uses three editing tags ([B][U][SIZE=4]) and really screams for attention. The wording implies to be a fact and is only just an opinion. The second sentence written with caps lock is even better: “You gotta do, what I tell you!” A classic imperative. How do you feel when you read that? For me this really triggers what is called reactance. At that point the user already failed to deliver his message to me. But lets read on:
Now comes an analogy that is again a personal opinion pretending to be a fact. Hardly funny to me, but some might think different on feeding ducks.
Here is my highlight! Additionally no one plays it anymore, apart of 550 casuals and a bunch of console players. This sentence not only reveals that the poster is offtopic with his PC experience (reading comprehension?), it is loaded with inaccuracy and wrong facts. While its unknown to the public how many console players are actually playing brink (just “a bunch”), the amount of 550 refers to the peak amount of users in the steam top100. That “peak” means “most games loaded at the same time in the last 24 hours” and actual amount of players is a different thing as players during the other 23hours and whatever time are not counted.
The next part is again not glancing with truth (as there have been fixes) but not really important anymore as we come to the finishing statement, which i really love! It translates to “everyone with a different opinion is a fanboy, thus not having any credability” or in the harsher version “if you say something different, you are retarded and lying.” Ah you gotta admit that this is great! Thats a rhetoric master piece and should save you from any criticism! Oh wait, it actually only works on people that havent already learned how to deal with opposition and cant discuss yet. But it tells us even more about the author and how insecure he is about himself and people with other opinions.

Ok, so we saw two negative posts. Both harsh to the game and its short commings. The first author is expressing his experiences - from his point of view - and delivers a helpful comment.
The second post is full of pretended facts trying to show the one and only truth to the OP. Plain black and white thinking at its best and failing at being actually helpful or true. But hey, it was a great flame bait!

You heard wrong, me thinks. The last week or so I’ve played nearly every day and managed to secure multiple games with 14-16 players each time… It largely depends on what time of day you play.
And as always, “Play with friends” is the ultimate advice. If you don’t have friends, hook up with some of the people on the forums. I host forum matches every weekend with a ton of the guys from the Bethesda forums and we always get some great games.

To OP: If you want to get it, get it. It’s definitely worth the $20-30 you would spend on it now. It’s a fun game with most of its technical issues worked out… It has some short-coming, sure, but I feel the pros greatly out-weigh the cons.

(Stormchild) #14

Hi op,

It depends in what kind of FPS player you are. I think there is a good chance you’ll like the game and will at least get a dozen or two hours amount of fun play.

For around 20$ it is definitely a good game to play, and while the community got smaller, it is, as I can read for x360 at least, enough to play, and also more welded together.

You’ll get bored with it, like with anygame, but you can expect to get enough hours of play and fun for the money you’ll pay, truste me, even without the DLC, if you like objective class based shooters, funny climbing/sliding mechanics, some customization of guns and character looks, levelling and unlocking abilities… you’ll like it. Although if you’re easily bored with doing the same maps over and over, it might be a problem but that’s the genre : maps are done over and over, but there are several ways to play them depending on classes, weapons loadout, body type, map areas you prefer to hang out in, etc… and of course, tactics with your friends.

ps: don’t listen to PC elitists who only swear by “pro” gaming, and smear “casual” gaming, like they know anything. I know, I’m one of them sometimes, and I tell you : they felt betrayed, so some of them want revenge by pounding the game in the ground, even though it is still a very nice game, just not what they expected (we all get emotional sometimes, I remember when Halo wentfrom a PC game to xbox exclusive, I sweared I would destroy microsoft… then I grew up).

(sithhappens) #15

buy it used from game stop you have 7 days to play it if you dont like it return it for a full refund nothing to lose

(ivor1977) #16

I picked it up yesterday, preowned for £17 on ps3. Like u, I almost picked it up on launch but was the clan was all about socom at the time. I stuck it on last night for a few hours and i’d have to say it’s pretty cool. Yes the servers were not completly full and the shootery took a bit of getting used to (like any game), but im more than happy with my purchase.

(Azure19) #17

It’s worth it even at $60, it’s a game with amazing multiplayer. It’s a game that worth new as well. I highly recommend you get it but be patent with it.
