Is Brink Steamworks or Games for Windows? (in reference to boxart on shop page)

(justing943) #1

Hi!

Basically what the title says; which one is it? I could’ve sworn only yesterday it said “Requires steam and internet connection to play etc…,” but now that’s gone, and the boxart has Games for Windows on it. Is there some kind of unannounced last minute change :S? I don’t mean to be a Steam fanboy, but seeing as most of my games are on there, I was looking forward to buying Brink from here as a steamworks game so I could register it on Steam, to avoid the ridiculous $40 price hike for Australians, but that doesn’t look like likely anymore ):.

Thanks,
Justin

(madness) #2

why can’t it be both ???

(madoule) #3

Hi, there!
it’s steamworks, here the steam page for brink: http://store.steampowered.com/app/22350/

use the link in my signature to read up on everything else you might want to know…

basically it’s possible but seriously, who’d want that? all GFWL were a major let down for me. one instance where i thought i’d bypass GFW by purchasing arkham asylum over steam, i had to use GFW again to validate it with a second time after purchase over steam…

Oops, forgot to put that in the post. I already posted this on the Steam forum also. Yeah, that’s what I was thinking, that it is now available everywhere as a non Steam game. I just find it odd though, that less than 2 weeks from release, it has been changed on many digital download sites as a Steam-required game to a normal one. Don’t get me wrong - I know that’s a huge positive for many people.

The only place I can find that still sells the digital Steamworks version seems to be D2D which is restricted for Australians anyway. Looks like I’ll have to wait for a sale on Steam or something then :S.

Thanks

edit: Oh wow @ post above you got in before me :P. Yeah, I’m hoping it’s steamworks, but the boxart doesn’t look promising LOL. Here’s the site I was referring to: http://game.gamesplanet.com/buy-down...k-2461-38.html. The boxart on that now says “Games for Windows” as opposed to a few days ago when that wasn’t there and there was a caption underneath saying Steam account and internet connection was required to play, which could only mean there is now both a GFW and Steamworks version…? >< I don’t know :open_mouth:

(murka) #5

I think it’s both.

(Mustkunstn1k) #6

It’s Games for Windows and also Steam. GFW and GFWL are different things.

(Daystar) #7

I’m presuming that if you buy the disk you can install it and add it to your Steam, and you’ll be able to have all the funcitonality of a “Steam game”, as if you downloaded it from Steam.

(justing943) #8

Ah okay, thanks for the confirmation ):. I didn’t say it was GFWL though…

Stupid question, I know, but that would mean ordering the Games for Windows one would prevent me from registering it on steam, right? :S

edit: My bad, I just realised your GFW/GFWL correction wasn’t directed at me

edit 2: Oops posted late again. I would hope so, but I don’t know :S. I’ll probably wait for confirmation from someone here/on Steam forums before I make the purchase. For the sake of consistency I just want to be able to manage all my games from steam haha.

(madoule) #9

link doesnt work for me, bro.
anyhow afaik nothing was ever mentioned in terms of GFW(L) concerning brink. everything i read was based on steam plattform. the most recent ded. server FAQ as well implied that ded. server files will be distributed via steam for free. for me that sounds like theres no GFW(L) stuff

(madness) #10

every PC game has the Games for Windows thing, don’t they ? Wether they have Steamworks or not. one does not exclude the other. OP is mixing it up with GFWL imo

(Salteh) #11

What he said.
GFW and GFWL are two different things.

Games For Windows means the game meets certain MS requirements.

Brink is GFW (and steam), NOT GFWL.
every PC game has the Games for Windows thing, don’t they ? Wether they have Steamworks or not. one does not exclude the other. OP is mixing it up with GFWL imo
I would like to disagree lol, if you read through all my posts in this thread properly you’ll see that I didn’t at any point mix the two up lol. At any rate, it wasn’t me who did, anyway.

Also. That WOULD imply that as long as it’s a steamworks game…It should be register-able on Steam right? :L The website I was planning to buy from doesn’t have a discount on it anyway, so I might just wait until the release date for people/Steam themselves on their support page to confirm whether you can register it even if bought from elsewhere.

Okay it suddenly hit me why you said I was mixing them up, lols. And in that case, yes I did mix them up oops :L

My hopes it’ll be register-able on Steam have be rekindled, in that case. :L

edit: Seeing as GFW does not hinder it being Steamworks, would you be able to confirm for me with 95%+ certainty no matter where it’s bought from [first hand from a reliable source e.g. http://game.gamesplanet.com/buy-download-pc-games/Brink-2461-38.html] it’ll be able to be registered on steam? Haha

(madoule) #13

apologies! the hiccup-mixup was caused by me.
anyhow this actually happened due to the statement

but now that’s gone, and the boxart has Games for Windows on it. Is there some kind of unannounced last minute change
in the OP.
GFW=MS approved therefor only steam registration needed.

Thanks for clarifying that! I was getting worried, Games for Windows… Steam… agh! But it’s great no know that it’s a Steam Works game.

This means, if you need to patch Brink, you don’t need to go through the lengthy approval process, correct?

(madoule) #15

steam fanboys! how do you do! XD
nah seriously, i have begun to love me dear old steam.

Well let’s be honest, it is hands down the best PC “platform”. GFWL has a lengthy approval process and isn’t exactly popular anyway. Steam often has deals, and any Steamworks game has an over-lay. There’s achievements and plenty of statistics logging. The ability to join a game that your friend is playing, and all games are re-downloadable as they’re tied to your account. Any issues and you can just re-download the game.

… Steam is the best

(Bullveyr) #17

btw, I guess that also means the game is multilingual and I can change my german version from amazon.de to english language

(justing943) #18

Okay cool thanks for all the replies  Very glad to hear this will activate fine on Steam. Now deciding whether to pre-purchase Duke Nukem Forever so much in advance… :open_mouth: probably not rofl. Now I can safely pre-purchase Brink tomorrow without worrying about Steam integration:L

(madoule) #19

yeah, i can’t stand any of the german dubs, i always switch to the english version. unfortunately there’s usually a censored version for us german gamers… ;(

welcome! why not order it now? or take you time to check out whether you’d prefer any other pre-order deals with different cosmetic extras. i heard the UK preorder somewhere had a double extra for the price of one. just search the forums for that thread.

Yeah GAME (www.game.co.uk) do a Special Edition of Brink that comes with both the Doom and Spec ops pack. It’s £5 more than the standard edition (no perks).
