Installing Custom Maps...

(puubert) #1

Well my question has changed, cause I found it was the etmain folder. My question now is how do I load them up to play them? I assume I start a server and join it, what do I type in the console to load the map?

For the arseholes who will no doubt say “Use the search function” I already have and found nothing in 200 threads.

Geez, can’t you use the search function? jk with you buddy.

For maps in .pk3 you can click Host Game and then choose the map from a list then click “Start Server.”

For other maps you HAVE to have the .bsp file in etmain–>maps. Then from the main menu (not from a server) you type /sv_pure 0; /g_gametype 2; /map “mapname”

For instance, if the custom map was named “Fraglevel.bsp”

I’d type

/sv_pure 0
/g_gametype 2
/map Fraglevel

I’ve only got the .pk3 files. I tried loading up my own server, but a few of the maps I downloaded don’t show up. I can scroll down past the last visible entry in that part, but there’s nothing there. I’ll give it a shot though.

EDIT: Those invisible slots all run as 6 map servers. This is why I never bothered with custom maps in the first place. So much dicking around sighs

EDIT II: Well I tried the /map anyway, and it would have worked except something about a pure server, so I’ll try it with the commands you gave. All the .bsp talk threw me. What the hell is it?

don’t mind the bsp, it’s inside the pk3 but you shouldn’t extract them

Hi!
First you need to “get the map”. Some servers have autodownload function. So, you just join the server and the map starts loading to your harddrive.
Just toss the pk3 (like berserk_te.pk3) into the etmain folder. Then start ET. Pull down the consol and typ /map berserk_te, and hit ENTER. I hope it’ll work.

First, and most obviously, download the maps you want. Normally they come in .zip or .pk3. If its a .zip unzip it, read the read me and copy the .pk3 to your /etmain, /etpro and/or /shrubet directory depending which mod you wish to play this map on. If its a .pk3 when you download just copy straight away without unzipping. Unless your a curious mapper/general kiddie ripper you will NEVER need to unzip a .pk3 file. Never..

Now that your map is over and ready to go load up ET. Now, there is 2 ways to do this. You can either bring down the console (` key) and type:

/g_gametype 2
/devmap or /map <MAP NAME>

The reason behind the gametype is the default is set at campaign, but, you obviously cant have a ‘campaign’ on one map so you need the gametype to change it to single map/objective. This above way, is imo, the easiest. And with /devmap running around a custom map for the first time it be handy… things like:

/god
/noclip
/give all

… help when trying to get a feel for a level. God so you dont harm yourself, noclip to look around ‘everywhere’ (see decent cut off points and camping spots for example :>) and Give All as you dont need to change class and go back to where you were to see if it is a decent group? defense? spot.

The other way, and most ‘pickiest’ is using the menus. Click on Host Game, change game type to Objective, click your map then play. Sounds easy? For some reason, it just NEVER seems to work. Usually dumps you back to the console… or even with some maps, Fueldump esp, it kicks you out with a Mem Error… nfi why considering on the 2 machines I use both have either 512mb pc3200 or 1gb of pc3200.

Or try out the VB ET-Starter.
This tool will start ET with the Map of your choice without typing the commands into the console.

Mind that if you use a crappy browser like IE and you download a pk3, it will AUTOMATICALLY save it as mapname.pk3.zip unless you specify it not to save as zip file. In this case, do not unzip but rename it to mapname.pk3

(pgh) #9

Really? I have never ever had that problem. IE cant force a filetype if its already been set tho? It can give an option but not automatically… it’d be like visiting a .html file and it asks you to download <page>.html.zip? Dunno… but…

Tbh, use FireFox/Firebird/Opera. Far more superior and safer than any MS browser to date. And no doubt always will be.

Thanks pgh, the other maps bar the sniper range worked with the code you mentioned. The only other thing I’d like to know is how to enable cheats.

And if anyone knows any Australian servers where they run Supply Depot, 1944_beach and ammodepot?
