First, and most obviously, download the maps you want. Normally they come in .zip or .pk3. If its a .zip unzip it, read the read me and copy the .pk3 to your /etmain, /etpro and/or /shrubet directory depending which mod you wish to play this map on. If its a .pk3 when you download just copy straight away without unzipping. Unless your a curious mapper/general kiddie ripper you will NEVER need to unzip a .pk3 file. Never..
Now that your map is over and ready to go load up ET. Now, there is 2 ways to do this. You can either bring down the console (` key) and type:
/g_gametype 2
/devmap or /map <MAP NAME>
The reason behind the gametype is the default is set at campaign, but, you obviously cant have a ‘campaign’ on one map so you need the gametype to change it to single map/objective. This above way, is imo, the easiest. And with /devmap running around a custom map for the first time it be handy… things like:
/god
/noclip
/give all
… help when trying to get a feel for a level. God so you dont harm yourself, noclip to look around ‘everywhere’ (see decent cut off points and camping spots for example :>) and Give All as you dont need to change class and go back to where you were to see if it is a decent group? defense? spot.
The other way, and most ‘pickiest’ is using the menus. Click on Host Game, change game type to Objective, click your map then play. Sounds easy? For some reason, it just NEVER seems to work.
Usually dumps you back to the console… or even with some maps, Fueldump esp, it kicks you out with a Mem Error… nfi why considering on the 2 machines I use both have either 512mb pc3200 or 1gb of pc3200.
