Installation Problem - with nVidia 6800 Ultra "Corrupt

(whamrick) #1

You guys really seem like a smart group out here, and I’m banging my head against the wall just trying to get ET installed with my new nVidia 6800 Ultra. When i run the install, after 86% completion, the install crashes with an error as follows “An I/O error occured while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.” A second message comes up that says, “Corrupt installation file!”

I’ve tried everything to fix it, including:

  1. Download the file again from several locations. I’ve taken those other files and successfully installed the game on my laptop; so, I know the file isn’t corrupted.
  2. Reinstall the device drivers - In safe mode with Virus Scan turned off.
  3. Remove Virus Scan program completely and perform #2.
  4. Run Scandisk to ensure HDD is ok.
  5. Defrag disk
  6. Turn down screen resolution to 800X600 (lowest avail for 19" monitor) and reinstall.
  7. Run dxdiag to ensure Directx 9.0b (and DirectDraw3D) is operating properly.
  8. Update BIOS and motherboard drivers

then i got drastic and did the following:
9. Replace motherboard, memory, and power supply (to 600W) with a clean install of Windows XP. :banghead:

I worried to think of what step 10 might be!

If anyone can think of anything else, I would greatly appreciate it. The game should run with this card because i’ve seen reviews where guys are using this card to run wolfet. It stops everytime at 86% regardless. Here is a snapshot of my environment:

Intel Pentium 4 - 2.6GHZ Hyperthreading
1GB RAM - 400Mhz DDR
Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
Windows XP sp1 (ver 5.1.26)
Directx 9.0b, DirectDraw 5.3
SoundMax Digital Audio (this is a 16-bit onboard sound device integrated into the motherboard)

Thanks in advance.

Could be your memory giving you a hard time, you need to check it with a good memory tester example from http://www.memtest86.com/ . But why don’t you copy the installed “Enemy Territory” dir from your notebook to your mainsystem and try playing ET instead?

bit of a crap workaround but you could always install on the laptop then copy the entire game directory over to your desktop … worked for me when I was too lazy to reinstall and configure …

Have you tried switching off DMA on your harddrive? Had a problem with that on one of my comps once, I couldn’t run most exe files (gave the exact error you mentioned, but so do other problems) or unrar most archive files, turned out DMA was causing it (even though it had been fine on the previous install of XP). Check device mangler to try switching it off.

Thank you everyone for your replies and suggestions, but I just got it fixed! After about 20 hours of working on the problem, I’ve resolved it. There will probably be others with this same problem; so, I will post the answer here in hopes that someone else may benefit from the solution.

What I did to fix it was: Go into the Windows display properties under Settings / Advanced / GeForce 6800 / Performance and Quality / and turn OFF Antialiasing, Anisotropic Filtering, and Vertical Sync, THEN install the product. You have to uncheck the Application-Controlled settings at the bottom of the window so that you can turn OFF those features. Once the product installs AND you install the patch (the patch failed when i turned the features back on before installing the patch), THEN you can go back in and turn the features back on. Don’t know whose fault you would consider that, but it is probably the driver’s fault. I guess for now it is my fault!

Again, thanks so much for your help, and hope that this solution will save others time in the future.
