Ingame Community/Clan logos suggestion

(Wolfmeister) #1

This suggestion is based on a big IF but based on what ive read about Brink its not entirely impossible that it could be implemented if SD chose to and the community wants it.

As a clever way to promote/tie the community to the game prior release,

- Invite the communities and clans to submit their exisiting logos for a texture pack shipping with the game.(these could be used as tattoos, base logos or on flags etc)

 • Open up a subforum solely for this purpose.
 • State in detail what format the logos should be submitted.
 • What other information is needed like URL:s to the communities/clanpages and the person responsible for the logo.

For this to work some kind of ingame community/clanpage is needed and i have no idea if SD has any plans for something like this.
But IF they do, now is the time start gathering the logos.

I dont know, maybe im way off, but personally it would be extremely cool to play a match vs some other gang and have both teams logos on the walls or flags. And maybe after a certain level getting a tattoo with your logo for your character.

Add your suggestions to this or flame away, ill enjoy both

I think it would be cool to have your clan logo on your outfits and what not

(Shiv) #3

This sounds similar to dow’s system where you can add your own pics to be used as banner and badge for your units.

of course, i totally made a penis the first time… just because no one else at the lan knew it was possible and their faces where priceless when they saw the penis banner hanging over what was once their cp

I would probably put a penis on my character in game for a while as well :\

while it was somehow cool to have your own config being shipped with the retail game of quake wars, i think that putting logos into brink isn’t appropriate. first of all as a clan member you don’t want everyone who buys the game being able to select your clan logo. that’s sth that should be spread among clan members as addon .pak file.

a subforum for that purpose is overkill imo, forum posts are sufficient. the format can change over time, with an additional .pak file to the retail version, you are on the safe side. also urls and clans change. it’s not a good choice to integrate stuff into the game which doesn’t work when you eg click on it. imo some kind of “plugin” to the retail version is the correct way to implement that kind of stuff.

and then there’s the community split 360/ps3/pc etc.

I have to agree with Joe999.

And to be honest, I don’t like ‘messy’ games, with (most often) ugly user created content.
I know you ment texture packs made by officials only but the logo’s ect can still be ugly
since they are coming from users. And even nice logo’s…nah.
What it comes down to is, I just dont wanne see anything other but official art.

But if there was some way to make clans or individuals earn/buy exclusive
tattoo’s, masks, jackets, hoodies or whatever, that would be very cool indeed.
Wether you can earn/buy these exclusives ingame or out, either one would be nice imho.

That Dow’s system sounds like a nightmare, penisses everywere

@ shiv, yea thats a problem in Valve games but this will be different since everyone, including SD, will see and judge the logos posted on the forum before its implemented. If its a penis its not gonna be included. (atleast i dont think so ;)) Also this is a one time offer, you cant change the logo after the game ships.

@ joe999, The idea with the URL wasnt for it to be in the game but more as a control so that SD and the community can click it and verify that there actually exists a Community/Clanssite with that logo.

I think the community would be a great help to sort all the crap logos out so that SD doesnt have to put too much work in this.

If all the logo-suggestions are in one place its easy for anyone to judge them.

1. Is the logo appropriate (no porn, no Pepsi, Coca-Cola or nazi variants) Check!
2. Does the logo exist on the page that the poster said it would? Check!
3. Is the quality of the logo on par with the ingame textures? Check!
4. Does it meet the technical requirements that SD has put up? Check!

Then when , whatever deadline SD has is up, all the OK:d logos makes it into the game.

I know theres alot of ifs and buts but we dont know what SD has in mind. Maybe this could fit in perfectly with what hey have in mind for the game and community?

Edit: Good point from Senyin, ill add a 4th parameter, quality. Im sure this community has lots of GFX pros that would help those that has the will but not the skill

Sounds way too complicated to me.

 • why should anybody not in your clan be able to show your logo?
 • many teams form after release
 • clans and logos change more or less frequently
 • it is too much effort to review all logos

I think it would be a lot more reasonable to allow logos per default with an option to disable them or block specific ones. One concern might be the traffic; depending on how big they are you would have to download up to 15 times that size on a public server. Yeah and like you said they may look rubbish.

(tokamak) #8

That’s the issue I take with this. Why should clans that exist before the game get such privileges?

A much easier point would be to simply allow uploading any logo like TF2 and Raven Shield have, but include the option to report offensive content. This can than fall under ‘community management’, I’m sure Badman has no problem looking at a handful of reported issues each month.

Just a small greyscale TGA file (so it can be integrated in coloured clothing in game) should do the trick of not making everything too heavy and too elaborate.

(Wolfmeister) #9

Sure the TF2 route works too, its just more work since youd have to have a guy monitoring the reports.

if you play a scrim i don’t think the players want to download any custom bs.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not a nice idea, but i suggest using the system the source engine has: “sprays”
everybody can make a spray and then spray it where ever they want with like a 60 second delay before they can spray it again.

Then SD doesn’t have to look at anything because seriously?.. no I don’t think anybody wants to waste their time on that.

Then if you are in a clan you can arrange to all have the same spray and put it where ever.
Sure then you get inappropriate sprays, but in the options menu you can shoose to turn them off, and server admins can see whos spray is whos and delete them if necessary.

This could even fit into the theme of Brink with the graffiti.

Alternatively they could include a grafitti font into Brink and then people could type a max 8 letter word (just the initials or short name) and then spray that, that would be less heavy on the network and a bit more practical.
I don’t care if people write ‘penis’ over the wall, but if it’s an actual picture f one it’s more disturbing and also graffiti would fit better into the theme.

(Floris) #11

How about letting players spray each other?

(tokamak) #12

It’s actually less work as you only need to monitor the reports and not every single file. Just like you don’t need to read every single forum post as an admin.

(stealth6) #13

lol less work? on a forum you might have 1000 members online if your lucky.
and then you have teams of moderators
On a game let’s say you have 10000 players

if only 1% reports thats already 1000 reports

so this is sytem is totally inpractical, better leave this to server admins or not at all.

@florisjuh, i don’t think that’s possible while having a nice effect and probably won’t look good anyway hehe

(tokamak) #14

Sure have it your way, an option to report it to the admins. In any case it’s way less goofy than packing in custom stuff in the official game.

(deadlights) #15

I think its a nice idea in theroy. But I don’t see how I could stop some other clan from taking my logo.

(SockDog) #16

It shouldn’t be up to SD/Bethesda to police this and really I don’t think it’s as feasible as you believe.

Instead leave it up to users.
Custom Content Options: All, Friends (Default) or None

(Friends) - As with voice, only your friends can display custom graphics.

I’d also like to see a block by user option. Select any or all of TXT, Voice or GFX then to block permanent or per a session/time.

Back on Topic though. Yes to custom content but No to including it at retail. Would rather there was more SD content which fit into the style of the game than some user content which looked odd and would largely be unused.

Still, it might be a nice bone to throw to the comp players. Run a competition and allow the top 4 teams include a logo or something. :stroggtapir:

(tokamak) #17

Aye that’s even better. I agree.

(Shiv) #18

you can never stop people stealing your stuff if they are set in their ways to do it…

and why does it matter so much?.. its like players having the same tag online.

(darthmob) #19
you can never stop people stealing your stuff if they are set in their ways to do it…

and why does it matter so much?.. its like players having the same tag online.
You do realise there is a difference between selecting a logo from a menu ingame and going to a clan’s homepage and photoshopping the banner to look like their ingame representation?

I think it matters a lot! There is nothing worse than some imbecile running around with your clantag and ruining your clan’s reputation. Think of it like some RPG’s karma system. It’s really hard to create a positive karma for your clan and it can be easily ruined. Tags and logos are a representation and they should only be available to members.

(dohfOs) #20

it’s a nice thought. but sorry to say, it’s a system that can easily be abused. so have to say i kinda end up somewhere along darthmobs’s way of looking at it
