If they’re using Steam on the PC they could integrate the Community features including groups. Don’t think you can stop people masquerading as clan members but you can at least have your clan in a verifiable group. Steam does a nice job of tracking players despite changes to the in-game name so that’d be cool too.
Ingame Community/Clan logos suggestion
The idea with this was to promote the community/clan side of things.
Giving you a sense of being part of a group like in Guild Wars where the leader chose a symbol and then everyone in the guild could use that (if they want to)
You could have predefined areas in the maps where these logos would appear (if used, if not, default art would be used) like billboards, LCD:s etc. And of course on your character like tattoos or on the clothing.
At first it might look like the Sprays in TF2 but its almost the opposite. In TF2 you can change the Spray several times each day, which is cool in its own way, but it doesnt make you feel connected to a community.
Reading through this i see that theres alot of different ideas how (or if) this should be implemented, im no expert, just a gamer that would love if something like this got in.
How exactly would you promote the clan side of things if you give a select few, namely the ones who followed the game before it’s release, the privilege of having an in game tag?
If thats a big problem just solve it by adding it in patches or other official updates that will come later.
Or add a ingame community/clan page with features like adding members, logo etc. That way only the creator of the page can upload a logo.
I’m a little confused. I’m all for SD developing fictitious logos, badges, tattoo etc for clans to use. I’m also very much for the use of custom content. What I don’t understand is why you’d want your own clan’s logo included in a game where anyone can use it, it’s inclusion will pretty much devalue it as a clan identifier. Don’t forget people will buy this game and it’s content, they won’t care if it’s your clan tag, if it’s in the game it’s there for them to use.
To me, its much better you design and pass around within your clan a high quality texture for use on your characters and would be hard for someone to copy as they’d not have easy access to the source texture.
I do like the idea of extending the custom content to the levels though. Be nice if there were ways to customise certain map textures (flags, screens etc) on a server level. And I won’t stray too far into this but it’ll be a nice way for server owners to offset cost with a little advertising (shhhh I didn’t say that).
well I guess you can just mod textures and then clients download em just like W: ET? then you have the effect you desire?
I was hoping for something more interesting, that’s why i mentioned the font idea, I think if you used that clients would only have to download a few kilobytes max and it would give a subtle glee to server admins to see their clan name on the walls.
Pros:
-no big downloads
-gets the message across
-subtle
-Applies to a broad audience (not just a few clans)
Cons:
-Whats the point? (pure eye candy)
-limited creativity
I believe I already asked the question of whether custom tats etc. would be viable or not
And don’t think I got an answer either way
My contribution is thus
Individuals/Clans shouldn’t be allowed to submit any logo’s or what not
Maybe with the exception of say a competition winner gets an approved tatoo or something at a later date
However if the system SD have developed allows for it
Custom sprays, tatoos, t-shirt designs etc. would be a welcome announcement
I hope that the game doesn’t become too much like facebook =/
Some games are really taking it too far nowadays with the customization. Sure it’s nice to mkae your character unique, but what did you buy the game for the gameplay or how you look hehe.
And yes it was stated in another topic that 1 of the players in the screenshot had a name tag on, but it was static, so not dependant upon your nickname.
Ok, lets scrap the “shipping with retail” part then.
How about my suggestion earlier “Or add a ingame community/clan page with features like adding members, logo etc. That way only the creator of the page can upload a logo.”
Using this, noone can use your clanlogo more than in lets say, TF2?
Sure, a community/clan leader can copy your logo and upload it as their own but i think and hope people with their own community/clan are more interested in having their own logo. IF it would happen a date when the logo was added on the ingame community/clan page might help.
Let me stress that this is NOT about individual player logos like in TF2.
You guys are really concentrating on the negative side of this
Im sure that IF something like this, not exactly like ive decribed it, would be implemented there would be ways to prevent A-holes from ruining it.
One game that i never bought because it looked like it had too many problems was Section 8.
What still made me a little interested was the ingame clansupport.
You can read some about it here,

Not exactly an either or situation
Not speaking of Brink here, but I have been interested in some games in the past
Because of the customisability (in terms of looks) they allowed for
I will definately be getting Brink whether or not these were included
But many other genres have had this kind of thing in for a while
And whilst it is not yet expected of an FPS, is a definite plus and a stand out in the crowd feature
I hope some people do only buy Brink because of this feature
And then realise they have also landed up with an awesome gameplay experience
So for me it is an important and welcomed addition
Which is why I would also love to see female characters hint, hint
meh, I don’t mind the feature, but I prefer they don’t put too much time into it, since gameplay is much more important then how you look.
