I have hosted multiple W:ET servers throughout my ET “career”. I’m also pretty sure the rest posting in this topic have too. We know what we’re doing. I don’t think anyone needs an example to get a players guid nor do I think we are scared of kicking a pro player accidently. If that happens, you can always apologize. Also laughing at our posts makes you look kind of arrogant. Posting one line of LUA code doesn’t really make you an expert either.
The thing is, you don’t really seem to understand that posting 4 random text strings isn’t a proof of anything. What if they’re just 4 friendly guys you just happen to hate for some reason. They could be cheaters or griefers, but you’re not proving it. That is why no competent admin is going to ban those GUIDs/IPs.
It’s also a fact that changing PB based GUID is quite simple. Bans based on GUIDs will not last for very long, because nowadays (as far as I know) everyone needs to actually manually get the GUID, thanks to PB no longer hosting authentication servers. This means even the dumbest player in the world is capable of changing a GUID.
MAC bans can be spoofed, yes, but it actually requires a lot (still very little) more effort to do, hence it would be way better to include here. (Not that we still would ban, check first paragraph.) One shouldn’t be spoofing MAC addresses anyway, makes your ISP sad.
Usually cheaters have a certain IP range at their use. For example 5 IPs that start with a certain prefix such as 123.456.*. Banning the IP range prevents them from reconnecting. It will also ban all users from the same IP range, hence not very useful. Banning the IPs one by one is a method that will work, eventually.
Advanced cheaters use proxies to hide their real IP, but usually the IPs of these proxies are already banned (thanks to some other cheater), especially if they’re free. Companies providing VPNs to hide your IP don’t have millions of IPs either. It will not take very long to ban them all, meaning all cheaters using the same proxies will be banned. Proxies also increase latency between client and server making it more difficult to enjoy the cheating experience.
If you can’t judge if a player is trustworthy for admin power, you just need to practise being a server admin. Obviously everyone misjudges every once in a while, but at some point it’s quite easy to see, who’s trustworthy and who’s not.
I don’t think anyone wants cheaters or griefers to their servers. It’s just that you’re pointing a finger at some random people we don’t know. We have no idea who they are or what they have done. This is why we’re not banning anyone listed here.
Thanks, Zero
PS.
- Changing of names to act bad… how will you really be able to track that, please explain to us
I thought you said you’re not a beginner. Use a simple LUA system to track the player based on IP range, GUID, MAC address, hardware ID (if supported by mod) or anything else that can identify a player. It wouldn’t take more than a few nights for a competent coder to implement.
