GS (B): Right, it seemed like he was throwing turrets down, he was doing whatever he wanted to when he wanted to. Is there a resource limitation?
RH: There definitely are, yeah. It equates to a traditional mana meter and honestly, you’re exactly right, we only got our GUI guy about a month ago and we hoped to actually have everything turned on but in the time he had we just focused on making the wheel look nice. There is the equivalent of mana. And we need to come up with a good term for it because we keep calling it mana and that doesn’t fit.
GS (B): Well, you’re coming from Fable so…
RH: Exactly.

If you need a different word for ‘mana’ (as a means of resource limit for putting up turrets, charges, etc etc):
call it flow

German site “PC Games Hardware” names Brink both revolutionary and exceptional:

Now the English PC Games Hardware published an interview with RR2DO2 featuring various technical bits:

“On the hosting end, dedicated servers have always been a strong backbone of any multiplayer PC shooter and we will be offering these for people to host themselves.”

good news

good news[/quote]

And the followup question I don’t think anyody has asked. Will these follow ETQWs Ranked (GSP) vs Unranked (User) servers setup or will one type of dedicated server exist?

(badman) #68

We’re still working out the details there, so it’s still a bit too early to talk about this. The most specific I can get at this point is that we’re aware of the concerns raised by the community about the ranked/unranked approach used in ETQW.

(SockDog) #69

Thanks, knowing the concerns are on the white board is pretty much all we can ask for.

You guys might want to take a look at the approach Epic took with UT2004. One of the first games to feature statistics to such detail.

One of the big plusses of ranked servers is simply quality control. Ranked means pure and you don’t risk waiting half an hour to play in DM-subtractedcube, or even worse, spent all day downloading from a server only to find out that the entire main menu system has been totally mutilated, like what is happening right now in W:ET (absolutely horrible, I really hope the rumours of W:ET live are true and this will be solved).

UT2k4 simply solves this with a tiny checkbox below the server lists that says ‘pure servers only’. They found the distinction so important that they put this filter (unlike the rest of the filters) on a very prominent place in the online menu bar.

It really worked back then. Enough people were giving custom content a go (which is what made the unreal series so great) and you could always switch it off if you were not in the mood for it and just wanted to play the game you bought.

EDIT: On a second thought maybe I’m derailing the thread. If people are interested in discussing this further (as it really is something that pops up allot on the QW forums) I’ll make a new thread.

Go for it, I’m certainly up for knocking over some old ideas, doesn’t hurt until we get to twisting nipples and calling our mum’s names and such.

Will there be achievements? Seems to be a popular thing these days. Will it also be a Games for Windows game?

(tokamak) #75

Quite often, we’d get hardcore journalists in, and they wouldn’t realize they were playing bots. Generally it’s the human players that fail… what’s that test?

Turing test

And I’m sooo going to be a heavy operative! In TF2 all I do is sneak around, jump around corners while hitting people with my boxing gloves.

Bluegamer.net also has some video, which I assume they’ll eventually be asked to take down…

I saw the character customization stuff (it looks awesome btw) and these guys said only game play footage wasn’t allowed so this was all they could show.
