Improving hipfire-headshot consistency?

(PeneTraitor) #21

Listen for the headshot ding. Become like pavlov’s dog. Relax in a firefight. Dying is not always the worst thing if you can relax and try for the headshot. Lower your RoF. Fire a couple bullets and let off for half a second to reduce the spread. Practice your shooting cadence til the spread area is small consistently.

Man I wish I was loaded like Amerika so I could buy my peripherals like that.

As it stands, I have a Razer Sphex, which is incredibly slick, and a Razer Abyssus.

I don’t have the mousepad nor the deskspace to use my arm. I actually had my sens too low in game, once I knocked it up a notch my aiming was better.

You do want to lower sens, but don’t overshoot, or you’ll end up like me, wondering where the aim went. Also @gg2ez specs? I’m stuck with a GXT 660 and AMD FX 8320, and I can barely scrape 40 fps in a firefight.

EDIT: DON’T GET AN AMD CPU, JUST DON’T DO IT. @gg2ez

Haha, him and I have been speaking in a PM and I told him the exact same thing about AMD procs and the reason why they tend to give even less performance than you’d expect in a lot of games. He’s going with an i5 Skylake which I approve of!

Awesome! Apple color crosshair is very healthy!

I usually just keep the crosshair on about head level and try aim with a and d, don’t know if it’s really that much of a tip though, haha

Yeah, I’m in a pretty tough situation. I’ll be building a PC sometime this year because I have enough saved up but my budget is tight so I don’t think I’ll be able to afford a 144hz monitor. #AUDproblems
Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to get a new LCD 144hz monitor. Find yourself a good old high hz 4:3 CRT monitor and sacrifice the 16:9 resolution that LCDs offer. I still have my old 120hz CRT in my bedroom waiting for the day that this 144hz LCD dies.

@Amerika

Why didn’t you just get a QCK Heavy? It’s a double thick (or even more?) version of the QCK+. Wayyyyyyy smoother and consistent too - the QCK+ for me always feels uneven and lumpy kinda.

Personally not a huge fan of the Puretrak Talent. Too much friction compared to the QCK Heavy and Goliathus Speed.

Whatever pad anyone gets, avoid the CM Storm Speed like the plague - that thing has severe max sensitivity / max tracking speed issues. Any fast flick with any mouse = your cursor will spazz out and look directly upwards or downwards.

Because the QCK Heavy is much smaller than the pad I bought. The one I bought is virtually identical in feel, looks a bit better (deeper black), has a less annoying logo and is also 6mm thick. And yeah, I agree about the QCK+. It is too thin and you can feel even small bumps and imperfections when used by itself. I had to stack pads to get the right feel and they would always offset from each other which annoyed me.

I miss the days when I could go to CompuUSA and buy what was called a “storage bin mat” that was virtually the same thing. And I could get it for $3. I can’t even find a reference to one of those on Google anymore :frowning:

There are zero computer stores in or around my city. I have to drive 7 hours to get to the nearest one.

(doxjq) #31

@Amerika smaller really? Which one did you get? The QCK Heavy is 6mm thick and 17.7" by 15.7"

So maybe a tad smaller I guess if you have the XL, but only .3 of an inch each way haha.

(watsyurdeal) #32

@Amerika Just got my glorious XL today, this thing feels super smooth. It doesn’t feel rough or prickly like the Goliathus, feels a lot like a Pure Trak Talent but all black and with stiched edges. Damn good pad, @gg2ez if you are planning on getting a new mouse pad, get one of these.

I wish I had money to buy a new mouse pad every few months

My budget is pretty limited so I probably won’t be spending too much on peripherals. I’m using a generic no-brand mouse pad right now and it’s a-ok.

Additional info: I am using a Steelseries Rival mouse.

(watsyurdeal) #34

Well this pad is like, 15 bucks, unless importing to your country is uber expensive.

$15 US Bucks. That’s $20 or so AUD plus I have to pay import taxes which are high right now due to the fact that our government is running around like headless chickens doing f*ck all with our currency.

(Amerika) #36

Hrm, according to the Steel Series site the QCK Heavy they have is the size you mention. But on Amazon they only have a smaller one.

Either way, I like the one I bought better than the Steel Series pads anyway so it’s all good.

Yeah, I really like mine. I even like the stitching around the outside. Makes it look/feel like a more quality product and not something that was simply cut from a big sheet of material. And it’s hard to hate on their logo and logo size
Title pretty much says it all. I want to know how to get headshots from hipfire more consistently.

If someone could give me some advice and practice routines to do, I would much appreciate them.
im assuming youre already competent in aiming (IE if your weapons were 100% pinpoint accuracy with no COF bloom, you could maintain at least a 30%-40% accuracy)

Im also assuming you can in fact aim for and at least semi reliably get one or two shots to hit the head.

At this point, other than practice, you cant do much.

There is one reason for this, and one almost no level of skill can compensate for. RNG

Since your guns arent 100% pinpoint accuracy with no bloom, you will have to deal with RNG bullet spread. Dirty bomb is far from the worst spread ive ever experienced, in fact its probably one of the best other than team fortresses which never changes regardless of how much youve fired your gun.

there is a way to mitigate this problem though that has allowed me to get several shots to hit the head with automatic weapons even if the killing blow is not a headshot.

First, always aim for the upper torso near the neck to start off. This is just common sense as your weapons recoil will almost always go up to the head anyway, and you wont have to worry about the kick over shooting. As youre aiming, try to keep it in this ‘sweet spot’ of neck and face, many (or possibly all) of your shots will count as hitting the head hitbox, and worst case you will probably hit the torso.

Now im not a fantastic player, and this really just is more advice for accuracy overall instead of headshot accuracy, but the only real way to get better at headshots or aiming in general is practice.

Also, amerikas response was great.

At the end, it will become muscle memory and second nature. You’ll just passively do it.

(srswizard) #38

Train yourself to always keep your crosshair at head level, towards the enemy’s most likely position.
Tap/burst fire and pull mouse slightly downwards when firing, to control recoil.
Fully focus on their heads, and adapt a mentality where bodyshots aren’t good enough.

Then there’s the equipment part.
120Hz monitor (or above), good enough PC hardware, a mouse with a near flawless sensor and a decent, and large enough mouse mat.

On top of other things, disabling hitmarkers can help too.

For some reason that Amazon listing has the wrong dimensions listed (and has for some time). The QCK Heavy is nearly identical to the Glorious XL Heavy in both size (L x W) and thickness. I’ve purchased two over the past few years and can confirm this.

I am curious if the Glorious mat is a bit more durable than the SteelSeries. The cloth on mine wore down after about a year and my Zowie started having tracking issues. The Glorious XL definitely looks a lot nicer (actually black) in the pics and I’m not a fan of the giant SteelSeries logo. I’m curious about the new Zowie mats as well if anyone has had a chance to use one and can share their impressions.

(Amerika) #40

@srswizard I prefer hitmarkers to be on as I’ve gotten tons of kills through smoke and view obstructions based entirely on hitmarkers.

@pumpkinmeerkat I have no clue if it will be more durable. I have been replacing my QCK+ every 9 months to a year because of how quickly they wear down though so I hope it’s better. But that might just be because cloth fibers are doing to wear down after a lot of use and I doubt the Glorious PC Gaming brand one will fair any better. I am hell on hardware as seen below. Those are the keycaps I bought 6 months ago for a keyboard I just replaced. And no, I don’t have long fingernails. In intentionally bought keycaps that had the markers on the front of the keys so I wouldn’t mangle them within their first month. Before I started buying mechanical keyboards about 5 or so years ago I would go through 3-4 keyboards a year. Now I just go through keycaps.
