Improved shadows support

Plz. is there any possibility to do these things ( i hope that engine sources will be sometime released , so SD dont need to botherabout that )

  1. Fix cg_shadows 2 not drawing bug , you can try r_clear 1 with cg_shadows 2 and you will see a lot of purple place ( this was OK on RTCW )
  • If you want to see cg_shadows 2 in action just turn of hud (because head) , dont move . turn off coronas , dont check it near moving objects
  1. Allow MDM to cast shadows , I dunno how to do that , but it is almost as important as 1)
  2. this is easy point , to prevent shadows throught wall cheat just make trace for cecking visibility , this is easy for most modders ( playing with RF_NOSHADOW )
    I think it will be nice , also by doing 2) there will be support for cg_shadows 3 ( shadows planes , need small mod source modifications but they look good enought too)

wow, I had no idea ET had that stuff in it. I was actually thinking of looking into adding those kind of shadows.

Anyway which settings are you using to get those shadow effects? Playing with those two cvars you mention I got a lot of HOM effect and purple screen, but I could see some traces of the rendered shadows.

cg_shadows 2 requires stencil buffer (r_stencilbits 8 or something like that). ISTR it also crashes in some situations, and is banned almost everywhere because of the mentioned wallhack effect. AFAIK, It is a leftover from some unfinished experiment.

I can’t imagine cosmetic stuff like this will ever be fixed in an official patch, but who knows :moo: The etpro team did manage to slip a couple of features into 2.60.

I very much doubt the et engine will be released at least until Q3 is, and that is officially delayed until after they stop selling commercial licenses for it.

Tried changing the r_stencilbits to 8 but never got any luck with cg_shadows 2. However 4 made some shadows, but the shadows seems to appear on certain planes.

It needs fixed Engine , this works really good in old Quake III , and it is cheat disabled but working and nice in Call of Duty…
You also may need to remove some no-shadows flags if you want for example shadows for map models , however it can look weird since map models are often used to be near light…
Point is that this stuff was broken and it was left , ( no shadows for MDM for example ) and it will look nice when it will be back ( if got will give )
However these shadows are sometime taken as cheat
third point in my first post explains it and I think that most problems can be solved that way…
But I cant do anything now , editing binary files without source is not my hobby…
