Immaculately Retarded Crap

(Graham) #1

I just had a very strange IRC conversation with someone who has some grudge against PB… I thought some of you might get a laugh out of it…

[19:52:00] --> AI_coder has joined this channel (n=AI@ip-209-124-242-76.dynamic.eatel.net).
[19:52:09] <AI_coder> does nayone know how to play shrub mod on gentoo?
[19:52:34] <AI_coder> also, i did some reading about punkbuster and i am concerned about my privacy, does anyone trust them?
[19:53:08] <-- kung has left this server (“Client exiting”).
[20:07:43] <Graham> Shrub mod for RTCW?
[20:08:47] <Graham> Punkbuster, IMO is a very good anti-cheat program, it may be buggy, but I doubt id software would use them for most of their games if it was buggy and crap.
[20:09:52] <Graham> I mean, I trust them. Why wouldn’t you?
[20:09:57] <Graham> What have you been reading?
[20:10:17] <AI_coder> Graham: yeah for enemy territory
[20:10:38] <Graham> RTCW is not the same as ET
[20:10:55] <AI_coder> Graham: well i did some reading and it only took a few moments thought to realize that i have a lot of impt information on my computer
[20:11:05] <AI_coder> i don’t want it sent to anyone
[20:11:12] <Graham> But I wouldn’t use shrub for ET, it’s abandoned and forgotten software, use ETpub
[20:11:46] <Graham> Whoop-de-doo, you think of the millions of people with PB 1 person might of noticed their information being stolen.
[20:12:27] <Graham> What have you been reading?
[20:12:43] <AI_coder> that’s kind of how i figured it, but how does pb find out what to look for if they aren’t actively perusing users data?
[20:13:04] <Graham> You mean, how does PB work?
[20:13:15] <AI_coder> that too
[20:13:25] <AI_coder> but no, i meant…
[20:13:48] <Graham> PB works by assigning you a GUID, that GUID is used by servers to identify you when you’re playing.
[20:14:06] <Graham> If you cheat on a server, you’re banned and it remembers your GUID.
[20:14:15] <AI_coder> when a new hack comes out they have some way of identifying it and if it isn’t publicly available, e.g. a bunch of people are distributing it privately on a usb thumbdrive how would pb ever find it?
[20:14:41] <AI_coder> the only way i could figure they found it is by actively searching computers and sending data from them.
[20:15:18] <Graham> PB doesn’t just look for specific hacks, it can see what a player is actually seeing. They do this my monitoring what programs use openGL
[20:15:37] <Graham> PB only reckonises hacks when they are IN USE.
[20:15:42] <AI_coder> and while i never cheated and never will, i don’t want people going on my computer for any reason.
[20:16:04] <Graham> Oh boo hoo, I’m sure some porn and some illegal mp3s are really that private.
[20:16:11] <Graham> Simple, if you don’t truth them, don’t use it.
[20:16:23] <AI_coder> Graham: why are you insulting me?
[20:16:32] <Graham> Because you’re worrying about nothing at all.
[20:16:35] <AI_coder> i made a cogent argument and you’re taking offense.
[20:16:48] <AI_coder> Graham: that is a good reason to attack ppl?
[20:17:14] --> Thunderbird has joined this channel (n=roderick@roderick64.student.utwente.nl).
[20:17:33] <Graham> Yes! PB is tried and tested, if you can’t take software developer’s word for it that it’s not trying to hack you then what chance in hell do I have of persuading you?
[20:17:39] <AI_coder> to be honest what pb is doing is an OUTRAGE
[20:18:02] <Graham> Yeah, banning cheaters, damn them! Scurge of the earth!
[20:18:10] <Graham> Do you even know what PB does?
[20:19:16] <AI_coder> Graham: you know i’m not interested in proving myself to you, you’re only interested in insulting me.
[20:19:29] <Graham> Whatever! It doesn’t bother me.
[20:19:44] <AI_coder> well i hope pb get’s a class action lawsuit
[20:19:49] <Graham> Why?
[20:19:49] <AI_coder> i’m talking to my lawyer monday
[20:19:53] <-- AI_coder has left this server (Client Quit).

(DarkangelUK) #2

I’m sure his lawyer is going to take him very, very seriously over this matter. I’m suprised the interweb police weren’t called sooner.

(Graham) #3

That’s… the best picture… I’ve ever seen…

(kamikazee) #4

He doesn’t seem to be a coder, or at least no computer expert…

Whilst you could have been more subtle, you are right in the way that it seemed there was no way to convince him. Poor guy must have a post-Sony trauma.
Still that doesn’t give him the right to freak out like that.

(Graham) #5

Do I dare ask what post-Sony trauma is?

BTW ignorant people who can know better but can’t be bothered to learn irritate me a lot. I can be a bit of an arse at times.

(kamikazee) #6

Sony once released audo CD’s which would only be playable on a PC once an anti-piracy program was installed.
Best of all was that this also installed a piece of software which modified your system so they could hide certain files. Sony was forced to take all CD’s from the market, etc. etc. Can’t remember the whole thing, but that it was a stupid idea to even include such software.
I’d recommend to use Google should you want more info.

(Graham) #7

To me, Sony is a shady area, they can make some really good stuff, but they seem to make too much crap… I mean, PS3 is probably gona suck it if their E3 appearance is anything to go by, but I’ve got a big-ass Sony Bravia TV and it rules!

(kamikazee) #8

I was talking about Sony BMG, the music label side from Sony.

This article is only the first in many, it concludes a lot though: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/12/20/sony_rootkit_drm_settlement/

(Graham) #9

Well that’s bollocks, Sony need to shape up.

(Svanire) #10

On related sony news anyone heard about them denying the XXX industry to put their “material” on blu ray?

They did this with betamax and if you don’t know what betamax is this is the reason why.

Personally I’m happy. Sony can’t go die with all there crap.

(Graham) #11

Blu-ray is going to be a horrible peice of shit. Last I heard HDDVD had slightly better picture quality, and was a fuck-load cheaper. Seriously, look how much a HDDVD player costs and then how much a Blu-Ray player costs.

(DG) #12

IMO the price element of blue ray vs. hddvd will be more defined by what the chinese can make them for.

I cant imagine sony denied pr0n on their format, they are early adopters of tech, it would be unconstitutional in the US, and being restricted and imposed upon by anything other than the market is just not an option for Hollywood who will in all probability determine which format wins in the west.

betamax failed because it was proprietary, and as such is one of the most well known marketing case studies - helped by the underlying theme being an attempt to control and monopolise was beaten by the overwhelming force of the free market.

(Joe999) #13

$ony didn’t deny pr0n, that was a misunderstanding. read it on the web yesterday, they gave an official statement. it was only some sub-department that denied it. the better hd-dvd quality derives from the fact that blu-ray still uses mpeg2 compression whereas hd-dvd uses vc-1. besides the bd is totally still a prototype with a 1 in 10 yield, so basically for every 1 disc that is produced, 9 are binned. i don’t expect that $ony will solve their problems soon, best example for their failures: ps3. i personally hope that hd-dvd makes the race as everything that’s come from $ony recently is lies, rootkits n other shit like UMD and it seems they try to do their best to annoy the legal customers.

(TNR360) #14

Lol graham

(I3LiP) #15

Woah Graham, you have the most awesomeness ET:QW picture ever in your signature!

(kamikazee) #16

Sorry, the trick doesn’t work for people who are used to reading text-based signatures. :stroggbanana:

(Sauron|EFG) #17

Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players support MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), VC-1 and MPEG-2, but…

Blu-Ray has a higher data transfer rate, so it’s quite possible that future Blu-ray movies will be better quality than HD-DVD.

(I still hope it fails though. )

Punkbuster works by checking the server files and the client files then matching the two. If the client is running any additional “patches” or files that are not on the server at the time, punkbuster kicks the player until the two versions are equal, or the same. The best way to trick punkbuster is for cheaters to install “patches” on their own servers and then host their own game there. This way it will look punk buster secured but now everyone has the patch which allows someone to cheat and only the administrator knows about it. I think I’ve only seen this happen, once maybe. I may be wrong on this, but if you ever get kicked by punkbuster it puts “ERROR: Files do not match server.” or something like that in the console.

(Dazzamac) #19

Your thinking of the mod that has inbuilt cheats. Forget what its called but its basically where everyone is on the same cheating playing field but its all server side so you can’t run the mod on etpro or anythin.
