I'm actually a bit worried about the abilities

(shipitshep1) #1

I may be misunderstanding something but consider my soldier class. By level 20 I’ll have unlocked nearly (all but 1 or 2) of the abilities that can be applied to a soldier. I know there is a limit on the number of active abilities but if i can have as many passive abilities as I like then I’ll have pretty much every passive ability applied to my solider, so will everybody else (by level 20) and I’ll also have the same for the 3 other classes once I level them up. This seems kinda silly no?

(ClickClickBOOM) #2

I´m bi-skilling my character for pub play.

WINNING

(tokamak) #3

Yeah I see your point. There’s very little path dependency in the progress. To me it also feels like a player has too much choice at level 20.

(Protector) #4

Not sure I understand?? Are you basically saying other people will have the same abilities as you and thats a problem?

(tokamak) #5

Yes, it makes your character less unique.

(Mustkunstn1k) #6

Not seeing the issue you are trying to relay atm.

Aren’t there like 59 abilities or so? There can be heck of a lot of combinations for choosing 20…

(shipitshep1) #7

I worded that badly. Basically my point is by the time you get to level 20 (on each class build) you will have every passive ability available. For instance EVERYBODY will have downed fire is one example

(shipitshep1) #8

Yes there are 59 but if you level up 10 characters separately then that eliminates 30 or so abilities from ever being touch in each character build. For instance I will never buy solider, medic or operative abilities for my engineer class.

(Chex) #9

You are encouraged to change classes mid-game according to the videos at least. Maybe that will help with a more diverse ability distribution, but in a more competitive environment, I guess the advertized variety is not really well implemented.

(tokamak) #10

Just not within the class. The variation comes from which mix of classes you chose and less of what you chose to do with your class.

(shipitshep1) #11

No it’s not that people have the same abilities as you that’s the problem. It’s the fact that everybody will have the same classes by the time they get to level 20. Every level 20 engineer will be pretty much the same, every level 20 medic will be pretty much the same etc etc (ability wise anyway, obviously different guns and body sizes). It’s not a major problem but it means that there won’t be any unique classes and things like downed fire, silent running will be used by pretty much every level 20 character. All level 20 medics will be using self resurrection. All level 20 soldiers will have extra grenade damage. It almost defeats the purpose of choosing between these abilities if everybody will have (almost) all of them by max level.

(tokamak) #12

I’m positive that’s what I said. In any case, I agree. Here’s to hoping any future wedges the builds a bit further apart from each other.

(Protector) #13

I think there is enough abilities for each player to be relatively unique and just because someone has an ability doesn’t necessarily mean they use it to its best potential.

(shipitshep1) #14

Yes tokamak I agree, that is exactly what you said. I was trying to elaborate to other posters who didn’t understand my initial point. It would be better if you only had 15 unlock points (alternatively add more abilities but that could cause a lack of balance plus it’s a lot more work for the devs).

(tokamak) #15

Yeah 15 seems more interesting indeed.

(hamstein) #16

I like it however it would be nice if you had limited passive and active abilities to take.

That way you could make a grenade soldier or ammo soldier. A mechanic engineer or buff-engineer. etc.

It would be cool, like the sub-classes in BF2142.

(shipitshep1) #17

Exactly hamstein it would make it more interesting.

I just looked through the abilities list and it will be the case that literally every level 20 medic will have EXACTLY the same passive abilities as any other level 20 medic. Every level 20 soldier will have EXACTLY the same passive abilities as any other level 20 soldier. I think this substantially weakens the sense of customization that you will get in game. I actually 15 skill points is still too many for each class. I think 10 or 12 skill points by max level would be an optimal number (IMO).

I may seem like I’m moaning over something not too important but I think it’s a simple issue that could be easily fixed by reducing the number of skill points obtained to 1 every other level as opposed to the way it is just now. You would get far more variety between classes of the same type and I think this would improve the game somewhat. Either way I’m looking forward to this game, it’s gonna be great!

(tokamak) #18

Can’t really add to that, i wholeheartedly agree, it’s been on the back of my mind but I never stated it.

(Ragoo) #19

I’m glad that we have at least unlimited passive abilities and 20 abilities overall. It would make pub play painful if everyone was very very specialized sometimes. Now I can at least play it safe and have a character who has many universal abilities and maybe good specific stuff for 2 or 3 classes

Obviously that doesn’t necessarily apply for arranged teams and competitive gaming. But we will have to figure out what exactly the rules for abilities will be in 5v5 anyway, I highly doubt it will be the same as 8v8 pub play.

(I’m happily waiting for tokamak coming in now telling me how fun it is to adapt to ****ty situations and quotes some lines from Day9)

I was thinking more along the lines of skills trees, people want to be rewarded every level with something. Maybe only allow 4 universal passives, 2 class passives and 3 abilities per class or something just off the top of my head. The thing is people want something each time they level up.
