Since Bethesda softworks owns Id software can’t SD use the id tech 5 engine instead of id tech 4?
Id tech 5?
wait…Brink uses basically the same engine as ET:QW ? The choppy and stuttering engine ?

This will have to be a VERY VERY INCREDIBLY MODIFIED version of this engine for it to be smooth. I really like what I’m hearing about BRINK’s premise/gameplay mechanics please don’t mess up the most important thing in the game. Movement and Shooting.
I’m trying to be optimistic but the new wolf game is also based on this engine and according to endrant… “a very modified” (I’m guessing that means improved, amirite?) version of the engine, and I’ve played the leaked beta and let’s just say that the same damn problem with movement and aiming are still there. At this point I don’t even think it’s possible to fix that damn engine when it comes to movement fluidity and aiming.
Please prove me wrong

On topic: Bethesda Softworks does not own id. It’s Zenimax Media who bought it. I’m not sure if idtech5 is already finished or work in progress but I seriously doubt there is any team outside id software working with it.

the engine is the topic
Do you mean the latest updates to quake 4? wouldn’t that have been added to the new wolf game and improved upon? hmm
I can’t wait to get the first videos of brink. I’m guessing we won’t see anything this year.

I’m not sure if it’s only official patches or mods as well. You have to keep in mind though that ETQW was released after Q4 as well. All I wanted to say is that not every game running on idtech4 is doomed (no pun intended) to be bad when it comes to aiming and movement.
It’s not exactly trivial to merge changes into a fork either. Especially if you’ve basically rewritten the whole bloody thing.
If I understand correctly, they’ve written a completely new renderer*.
*that supports stuff like virtual texturing, using shadow buffers rather than shadow volumes, and so probably won’t look anything like idtech4.
I kinda suspect that half of the reason they’ve done all the rewriting is specifically to deal with the idtech4 choppiness. Just a guess, though.

…[/QUOTE]As far as I recall, Arnout confessed that he wanted to redo some of the things in ET:QW, at least should he have gotten time for that (e.g. things like the main loop in the sound subsystem). With Brink being started as a new project, I expect they tackled these issues.
For sure they now know the engine and its quirks. Maybe Q3F might have gotten some flaws as well when the engine was new, but W:ET sure did a lot of things right…

great post, very re-assuring
Yea I agree with Dom big time here. If the shooting, hotboxes, netcode, and movement are not worked on… Brink will have some issues and well… Alot of players bitching about it. We delt with QW, but ALOT of clans could not… and the player base was cut in half several weeks after the game came out.
Let’s also not forget that SD’s programming team has exploded in size compared with the team working on ET:QW. The ET:QW manual credits 6 people in the programming department from SD, “The People” page now lists 18 people in programming positions.
forget about being optimistic. brink will have it too. they couldn’t fix it with qw, neither with wolf. after i read that the leaked beta doesn’t feel smooth, i tried it myself yesterday. it’s the same f*cking periodic stuttering that i have with every other id tech 4 game. nothing has changed. nothing will change. i’m really pissed. i’m buying wolf for the single player, because i guess it might not have it given that it’s based on directx. but the multiplayer? meh. i was so looking forward to this. but it seems id doesn’t want to fix this, neither does sd. all my enthusiasm for brink is gone. who needs a game that you can only look at, but can’t play?
@Joe999
You can’t judge something that haven’t out yet. We know SD is working hard for BRINK and they hire a lot of people ( i think they are the best on their field), so we can hope that BRINK will have a good and smooth gameplay
id released a statement today that the leaked Wolf2 MP was not even close to being a polished game. It was a pre-beta release that got leaked.
I don’t want to go off topic. Because this is not about Wolf2. This is about BRINK, so with that said, you honestly can’t make assumptions until you see som game play footage. And even then it is hard to tell…
It’d be difficult to maintain a Spring 2010 release date with an engine change.
After all, it’s not supposed to be BRINK: Forever… :o
