I played Brink at quakecon, some concerns

(AnthonyDa) #101

Wrong example is wrong.

(Voxie) #102

The PC version will have separate reload and use buttons for example, so not all commands are merged like on the console versions.
Once again this one button thing as maybe some pros… but I dare you to be as precise and effective with a nade at BC2 & at QW for exemple, just to show what difference I mean by that, try to move forward while strafing left right + holding another key + moving your mouse and you’ll maybe see the flaw I see… to me its not impossible but remove a big part of fun and precision.
I see where you’re coming from. I’ve always been comfortable using a mouse button for 'nades in games that have a designated grenade button, but as I suggested way back in the thread about this issue, a toggle mode would be awesome (press once to prime and the next press will throw it).
And if we are talking about tool and stuff, just play Wolf 2009 for 30 minutes and you’ll see that the “one button to do everything” is kinda screwed…
Completely agreed (gasp!, right?) about the interface being horrible in Wolf '09. The change in mechanics in Brink will hopefully rectify the problems that game has though.

Peace

(Apples) #103

Yeah if nade are “togglable” as voxie said… but how come its a wrong exemple?

Its exactly the same stuff, nades can be cooked etc, its just that in QW you preselect and hold down mouse 1 and in BC2 you directly hold your nade key…

Wrong trolling is wrong…

Peace

(DarkangelUK) #104

set nadearmed “bind G $nadedisarmed; bind mouse1 _weapon3; addchatline ‘Grenade Equipped’”
set nadedisarmed “bind G $nadearmed; bind mouse1 _attack; addchatline ‘Weapon Equipped’”
bind G $nadearmed

:D:D

Maybe work for Use button as well?

You can’t cook nade in BFBC2.
You failed.

(Senethro) #106

You’re bad at making cfgs for controls, apples.

I thought nades could be cooked in BC2.

(Apples) #107

Try to hold a nade more than 5 seconds and you’ll see if it cant be cooked…

Whats the point of cfgs and control stuff senethro? Any key would be less efficient than choose + mouse 1, its not a cfg matter, its a fact…

(AnthonyDa) #108

You can hold the grenade as long as you can, it will never explode while you are holding it.
Then when you release it there is always the same timer before it explodes ==> Grenade can’t be cooked in BFBC2.
Stop trolling us plz.

No, I’m pretty sure Mouse2-6 are equally effective if you’re wanting to move about while cooking.

(shirosae) #110

Just tried cooking a BC2 nade to suicide, didn’t go off until after I released.

BC2 kinda gets away with the dodgy nades because the movement speed is so much slower. Also because you also don’t need a 20 button mouse to hold all your other functions, since medpacks/supplies work as little healing wells you drop once rather than spammable pills (also because they’re on a bank, but still).

If Brink is any faster than BC2 (I should bloody hope so, even if the videos suggest that it ain’t), then it’s going to be much more sensitive to fumbly controls. So maybe default the grenade key to mouse2, or something?

Or maybe nades can go on the use key alongside everything else! (Just look at the enemy and hold use to start cooking.)

(AnthonyDa) #111

Don’t forget that you need a perk on frink to be able to cook nade iirc.

Cooking the nade is only part of the issue, the biggest part is not being able to equip it. The fact that you have to hold the button down until you are ready to throw is the problem. It’s very hard to be able to move and throw accurately when it all has to be done with your left hand.

Also, the rebind script posted above won’t work, the G button won’t equip it, it will throw it. You’d have to probably do a macro where you did a keydown event to get that to work.

Once you have the one button throws the nade, and assuming you want to dodge around while you’re throwing it, you can either bind it to a button you hit with your thumb, or you bind it to a mouse button.

Now add the one button mellee key. Same thing, people just don’t notice as much because typically it’s mouse 3. Put your nade on mouse 3 and you will be happy. But, one button nade, one button mellee, mouse buttons are running out (I like to have crouch on my mouse too).

So answer is give peeps the option, you can then do whatever works best for you. The one button thing can be the default because it’s console friendly and that seems to be the lowest common denominator nowadays, but let the guys who want to be able to change it with a cvar.

(AnthonyDa) #113

Ho noes somebody is trying to bring back the old discussion about the dedicated nade button :frowning:
The game have a lot more serious issues than this according to GC §review.

Could you link this preview please?

(BioSnark) #115

and source for nade priming and games for windows claims?

(f34n0r) #116

Hey SplashDamage guys/girls, Brink is going to be playable at PAX right? I look forward to a more person-to-person chat with you at PAX. I remember last year it was tough to approach you at Quakecon b/c your booth was so huge and you were the main attraction, but at PAX it was easier b/c I didn’t have to fight 8,000 people who were all there just to see Brink like @ Quakecon.

(DarkangelUK) #117

Why would it throw it? You just said it yourself, it’s a ‘rebind’ script, since when did executing a bind command run the action?

set nadearmed “bind G $nadedisarmed; bind mouse1 _weapon3; addchatline ‘Grenade Equipped’”
set nadedisarmed “bind G $nadearmed; bind mouse1 _attack; addchatline ‘Weapon Equipped’”
bind G $nadearmed

In both cases G is simply set to tell mouse1 what it’s function is, nothing even partains to G having the nade function placed on it.

(aimology) #118

Dont port the game. End of story.

(LyndonL) #119

It’s not ported. Read!

(Voxie) #120

“Utilizes the strengths of the PC platform” or “not suffering from consolitis” would be better terms than crying that it’s a port, since–ya know–it isn’t.
