It’s possible you’re receiving a PunkBuster update. On dial-up, this will usually make your ping skyrocket. Enter \pb_plist in the console to see if you’ve got the “UPDT” status indicator behind your name. If so, just wait until the download has completed (do not disconnect or you’d need to start all over again). Alternatively, use the PBWEB.EXE tool to update PB manually.
