I can proficiently play Phantom.

I can say proudly I enjoy playing phantom as he is. Not because of his crippling nerfs, but because of the enjoyment of playing him (and difficulty)
If you have any questions on how to actually play Phantom as he is currently, I can help aid you to take him on, and put him in your roster!

lol

  1. Shoot at heads with KEK
  2. Crouch in a corner and wait for an enemy to LMB-Spam-Katana
  3. Run away and recharge the armor
  4. ???
  5. Profit.

Primaries are overrated!

Whenever I play him I feel like a crippled Bushwacker without any redeeming qualities. Unless you count knifing people with the Katana useful. Then you may have just redefined the word ‘proficient’.

(YeOldeButtcheek) #6

Not dying, play as if you are completely invisible.

(Maverix) #7

I find Phantom pretty useful once you learn how to use him effectively. He’s also great at running past the enemy and setting the objective.

I played against your Phantom the other night.

Is there really a trick to playing Phantom’s current build other than just having cloak on before you walk into any room that you expect enemies to be in?

(gg2ez) #10

Teach me.

Edit: Oh look. Another unnecessary dislike from laudatoryLunch.

(YeOldeButtcheek) #11

Pre-cloak before entering the room, it won’t make a huge difference but you can absorb more hits the faster you do so.

If they made his cloak actually a bit more invisible, and make the CONSTANT ringing sound while cloaked quieter, perhaps he would be useful in +lv 10 servers. - As for competitive, because he’s less efficient at killing than fragger or nader and can’t heal or revive teammates, he serves little purpose. - This section of the issue could be remedied by either making his katana or melee gib (not allow a revive by medic) on kill (so he could be similar to a sniper pre-nerf) or by making him an engineer, so he could sneak behind to lay a C4 mine on the off-chance someone somehow doesn’t notice the loud ringing or barely-see-through merc running past them.

You can play one of the most selfish and useless team mercs in the game?

I get it, he’s fun to play, but damn he’s useless to the team, occasionally killing a key member or engaging in a firefight, but his ability is really selfish, probably the most in the whole game. No offense to you of course.

My friend bought Phantom last night and played him, and he pretty much wrapped it up in a nutshell:

“Phantom is a dick to play against, and a dick to play with. He also scores incredibly low against a competent team. The only reason I play him is because he’s fun

(DeadAlive) #14

I just got him. I’ve played tough cloaks in other games, as well as easy cloaks. This one is a tough one and will require a chunk of practice.

My biggest issue so far is the heartbeat sensor. Imo, since there are already lots of complaints about snipers (too many, OP, etc), I think they should consider removing sensor detection for the cloak unless he is within say, 10-20m of the sniper, and the sensor is covering the gap between the sniper and the Phantom.

The #1 draw of the Phantom is obviously the cloak, and to have it frequently and randomly disabled by the very spammy heartbeat sensor, by a sniper which, ironically, has no breathing motion and so can take rapid accurate shots, makes it a little unfair, imo.

So what you mean is, you have mastered the art of camping in a corner then jumping out to stab one person then instantly get killed by his/her team mates? Phantoms useless for everyone that uses him for melee. However of you use him how he was actually intended then you become useful to your team and that’s the most proficient way to use him. Use the cloak to flank and here’s the most important part…shoot them. Stabbing them leaves you vulnerable and you’ll get a couple of kills if your lucky but you WILL die. Flank, get a kill or 2 then cloak and retreat. Rinse and repeat and you will soon become viable, oh and all that from a person that has 10 hours playtime. #whowouldhavephunkit??!

(Naonna) #16

if you spend your cloak getting INTO a fight by sneaking around (despite the noise and high visibility) how do you intend to survive ten seconds of cloak cooldown after a pick of 1 or 2 enemies (in a best case scenario) in a competent team using voice-chat? The victims will tell EVERYONE of your location, and they won’t fall for it more than once, even if you move around. Once phantom is known to be on an enemy team, simply traveling in pairs will be enough to ruin him.

I’ve been playing with Phantom since he got released.
One thing that I never couldn’t understand what’s the logic behind this action of several Phantom players in public servers:

  1. Go in the cloak
  2. Run in the middle of the street in daylight
  3. Rush directly to the opponent
  4. Get shot before your katana tickles opponent
  5. Tell everyone that Phantom is bad and never touch the merc again

I find Phantom enjoyable to play, because of his personality. His voice lines are well made and I have a lot fun while listening him, but more fun I can get while playing with him.
I’m not only relying on cloak and katana, I use other weapons as well. KEK-10 is my favorite SMG in whole game. Katana of course is fun to use and sometimes it’s fun to sneak from behind and do a surprise with katana.

Before the cloak buff I found it ridiculous that Phantom is very visible even when he’s standing still. When the cloak buff came and Phantom is now less visible while moving slowly, that’s exactly what I was looking for.
Now I can simply walk where ever I want to go and so often nobody notices me.
Though those moments are hilarious when I try to just walk and stay hidden and suddenly a wild Skyhammer runs right to my katana like an animal wanting to be a kebab around the stick.

He is bad though, ever tried to play him above pub level? There’s literally no use for him. You get shut down before you can even reach the opponent, only time we ever considered using him was to get a sneak plant behind the enemy on Underground.

In a pub anything works, let’s be real.

Only few times in competitive I’ve played with Phantom, but I had him in my squad anyways and it was during the time when premade teams almost always got team of solo players at opponent side, so wasn’t that challenging match at the end. But for the question, the answer is: Yes.
( This is a bit off topic, but in competitive matches and tournaments I’m mostly a medic and as far as I know, Phantom is not even close to be a medic. )

Is he bad or not, that’s definitely an opinion question and depends a lot where you want to use him. Phantom is more common in public matches than in competitive matches, that’s right.
