Hum... Why free?

Before I start off i’m not saying that I am against it being free, all I am asking is, Why? A lot of times when somthing comes out free, you have to pay for it later (I.E Kazaa). Or, should we expect to see advertisments on the interface? Overall, what i’m saying is how is Splashdamage and the other companies going to fund for this and also update it. (we need patches, right?)

Putting all that aside, THANKS SPLASH DAMAGE! ET looks awesome!

I voted no. I’m happy with RTCW as it is today, I should like to see some small bugs removed, and some OSP features added, but furthermore I’m happy with it and I still like it the way I play it in competitive play (the n00bie let’s try to get some teamplay fashion 6vs6 stopwatch)

Furthermore I’m a cheap bastard so I don’t think I will buy another game if I still enjoy playing the game I’m playing right now.

I also think it’s useless to ask this question because I have read several unconfirmed reports that ET will be free. So this changes some stuff for me.

As far as me myself is involved, I will give both games some chance. But most likely the game that gives me the most fps (frames per second) and gameplay will be my final choice. If ET can not really be used for competition, it’s not likely I will play it a lot. For that information however I’ll just wait till they release something.

Question: When is the last time a top game such as RTCW comes out with a close cousin such as ET and is handed out for free? Bear in mind this is not some expansion pack with some new maps, this is a completly new product. Now invest six figures into developing the product and then turn around and hand it out for free? And from a publicly traded company such as Activision. They will need to explain something to their shareholders as to why this is a charity case for all of us Wolf players. How much time and money do you think a company will invest in a product such as support, enhancements, etc. if they have a zero return on investment? I’ll tell you this much…none!

Somehow I feel somewhere on down the road we will see how they will recoup their investment.

its free because the publishers prolly didnt feel the sp aspect was good enough, ie would get bad reviews by majority of mags. Still its strange they have wasted the time and money, but it wasnt the normal way of making a game it was several people inc splash damage who were an amatuer group before this, so it was never a normal setup so they prolly saved cash on that, but the biggest factor may of been the cost of publishing it would be too much of a risk because it cant of been up to stratch for a game or even add on, lets not forgot rtcw doesnt have a massive fan base and has even slumped to 10th most popular behind the likes of unreal tournament and soidier of fortune 2, so its easy to understand and the war games phase of selling well has maybe passed or reaching its final end, with so many ww2 themed games.
