Having played a few matches tonight vs a mix of pings I’ve noticed that players with > 100 ping (and it seems to get worse the higher the ping is) are incredibly hard to hit and not all shots seem to register, even at point blank range - I can pump a dozen or so bullets into a high ping player at point blank range with a SMG / MG, and yet they will kill me in 2 shots, with the damage dealt to the other player being 20hp or so. For a low-pinger, the fight is a lot more even + the shots will seem to register and I don’t tend to die so quick. Also I will find that I will get shot through walls from hpbs which seems to indicate some kind of prediction problem (note that it was Lee in this shot but its no way unique to Lee):

I found that I was having to lead my shots way ahead of what I’d need for a low-ping player which obviously is a tall ask consider that the target tends to try and dodge :).

Now I’m not the best shot in the world but I’ve never experienced this kind of issue with any other game to date to this level, and I’ve noticed the same issues with other low-ping players. I’ve also noticed this with the scoreboard of low-ping players vs high - the high pingers always seem to have the way highest k/d. I personally get a ping < 20 usually on the UK servers, and a solid 60-80fps.

We tried reversing the pings by switching to a US server as a test but none of them seem to be running.

I didn’t notice having to lead anything or anyone in this game no matter what the ping is.

(INF3RN0) #3

You just need a good frame rate to play this game lol. Ping doesn’t play in much unless it’s extremely high I would imagine.

This tends to fluctuate with me, even from encounter to encounter within the same match. I can unload half a clip into someone and see them come away with 110 hp, or go down almost immediately. It’s odd. I’m not sure if it’s latency or antilag or just bloom on the guns. I’ve held off saying anything until I can get some of my aim back and be sure it’s not just me sucking.

The being shot through walls things is much more consistently there. Then again I tend to notice it most when I’ve just ducked behind cover, so it might just be antilag working as intended and people shooting at where I was a quarter of a second ago.

I haven’t tried leading; to be honest with how flakey it is I’m not sure I could get consistent with it anyway.

Ive only played on 200 and 350 pings since im playing from aus.

200 is defenitely playable, although you have many instances where you shoot, see all the hits and do no dmg.

350 is like youre playing in mud, with the above amplified.

I never trusted myself to say it, because i wanted to observe a bit more. But basically i feel the same. However i am not able to say for sure. I think my hitratio in this game is about 8 - 15 %. I never knew why, i had come up with many reasons: bad framerate, bad player, windowed mode, really small hitboxes, too stupid to learn gunmechanics …

(On a sidenote: it would be nice to have some sort of display, where i can see my hitratio. Or at least a command which gives me feedback meanwhile.)

I guess the problem is my framerate. Mostly i am just bad, yes, but i am not that bad :stuck_out_tongue: I can go to an W:ET player low+ etpro server and easily and without problems get K/D of 1 and hitratio of 30%. And all that in “relaxed mode”, how i usually play.

So i do not know, but seeing here some others feel the same way encouraged me to make a little feedback. Though this should not be taken serious by SD staff. It could be really just that i am bad combined with my framerate. But then again, in other games i am not that bad.

I’ve felt this from the beginning as well but like others it’s hard to bring it up without sounding like a sore loser or a whiner. I wouldn’t class myself as the best aimer in the world but I’m not exactly the worst either… and when you empty a clip into someone and they walk away with 85hp, especially in a game like DB with the damage and ROF the way it is, it’s hard not to question it.

(j4b) #8

Feel the Same. but this was allready in other Games like etqw and brink. In etqw competition Matches vs polish opponents i prefered playing on there Server. For now i cant say if ist is all about THE Ping Or playing with < 60 fps.

Playing against germans was bad also, shooting a rocket and getting no hit registration when a cyclops is low health during an epic 1v1 duel and have it turn around and kill you, strangely had no problem hitting hogs

(Senethro) #10

I’m pretty sure the small number of American players are just of a higher average skill level and play more hours. I haven’t found anyone harder to hit, but I’d be able to say that with more confidence if I had my magenta dot crosshair. I keep aiming with the top of the cross instead of the centre.

It’s been said previously that if you see a hit in game then you should get a hit unless the lag compensation means you died before those hits registered with the server.

That being said I too can recall situations where I’m sure I’ve seen hits register, multiple times only to be cut down and the opponent having 50+ health. I’m assuming weapons lose damage over distance? Making even an accurate battle between two players at a distance somewhat one sided?

Not really sure how this can be tested. Even if the logic is sound and fair it needs to be looked at in regards to player feedback, people can’t feel their shots are being ignored. Better hitsounds and UI cues for damage given/received may help, even if this is something rough and thrown together in the Alpha.

i noticed the other day against scrupus, i hardly shot at him and he would die. my fps is 30 tops and our pings similar.
then last night i think it was frost mainly knifing was running from someone who was shooting him in the back and i was shooting him in the front until i ran out changed to shotgun unloaded 2 into him until he finally went down. was like being in a zombie flick.

doesnt seem very consistant.

(Reacto) #13

It seems quite weird indeed. As Darkangel says, it’s really hard to make assumptions without seeming like a sore loser. It would be a lot easier to show if we would be able to record our matches though. Personally I feel like it’s a lot harder to hit people if they have higher ping than me (around 200), and sometimes it feels like their movement is a lot less smooth than it actually should be. I can’t really prove it as I haven’t bothered to record, but the hit reg definitely feels better when playing against people with the same ping as you, and not 2x/3x times higher.

(Humate) #14

Havent played a lot on euro servers, but I think the skill level is quite a bit higher (possibly understating) on US.

Although they’ve probably played the game a bit more. We need more testers :frowning:

(Breo) #15

I played on a US server with a 100+ ping and some frag were a bit weird, you shoot but the enemy won’t die and suddenly you got the frag

(Breo) #16

Got sniped while I was already behind the corner

Humate and his lag switch again.

A timing issue with clientside hit detection maybe?

(Bloodbite) #18

I’ve had 50/50 experiences as well. Shots I know should have killed barely register one or two light taps… then the flip side is I think I just shot up the ground behind someone’s heels only to see them die whenever’s they’ve already gained cover. Its frustrating cause the skill kills don’t often deliver yet the blind chance shots do.

I’ve felt that on the receiving end too. I remember during a warmup match the other week I was using a sidearm and getting 80% contact while standing still mostly while whoever was shooting me was barely making contact… and they should have been cutting me down.

The lack of uniform lag makes you question if it’s you.

(Anti) #19

Are any of you experiencing this despite high frame rates? If you are then a Fraps (or something similar) of you playing, highlighting the issues might be handy. We’ve found in the past when we’ve felt there are these issues but watched back the videos it’s often been a result of other stuff (apparently, I miss more than I think!! :))

We could use the server demos to check out these occurances as well, if you have a match where you know it was often bad, but I’d be more confident with a client-side ‘as it happened’ video for checking these issues out.

We really want to ensure DB feels smooth, stable and responsive as a game, so it’s good for pubs and comp play alike. Any evidence you can give us on issues like this will definitely help us achieve that.

Just to let people know MSI Afterburner is a fantastic free video capture utility, a lot of people don’t realise it has this functionality so thought I’d mention it.
