How will Splash damage release PC dedicated server files?

(SuperWaz) #61

MIGRATING HOST…

The more I think about it, the more it seems that some form of P2P/listen server HAS to be adopted for PC to play SP/MP unless you can afford to purchase your own private dedi. Obviously this also explains why the devs aren’t saying much. As I have said before, IWNet was little more than a disaster on PC.

Dedicated servers for everyone is simply impossible. If SP and MP are “blurred” and are effectively the same thing the number of dedicated servers would need to match the number of PC sales to meet demand. That will never happen and I doubt Bethesda are going to pay to host dedis for all.

Some nice information, speculation, and opinions in this thread.

All that’s needed is for Splash Damage to have the final say. HINT!!

Not much different to L4D where you start a campaign and people can join you as you go, and if you CAN’T find a free dedi server it then and only then reverts to player hosted. They did have the completely offline option though so who knows.

(SuperWaz) #63

While L4D is great, the server system included is also very poor. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been kicked in the middle of a game by an invisible admin or mod.

(LyndonL) #64

That’s not the fault of the game, that’s the fault of a douchebag admin. I was going to play Killing Floor the other night, but my server was full. I checked the kill count and saw that someone had 250 kills and knew that they were about 3/4 through the game, so I waited til they’d finished then kicked the lowest player.

EDIT: And laughed cause the Patriarch killed them

(SuperWaz) #65

Douchebag admin or not, it’s something that happens very often in the L4D series, sadly.

(LyndonL) #66

Still not a fault of the game. If you don’t want it to happen to you then you make/rent a server. It’s the admin’s right to make room for paying supporters, clanmates etc etc.

(SuperWaz) #67

I agree, and I know it’s no fault of the L4D games, but two things to consider.

 1. Making a server (hosting) to host 16 people isn’t really a viable option in Brink to most people.
 2. If you’re buying a game which is essentially a MP game, why should you then have to pay yet more money to enjoy it properly it each month? Again, this is not viable for many.

It’s important they get this right, and it would be nice if someone would explain to the community how the servers are actually going to work on PC.

"Making a server (hosting) to host 16 people isn’t really a viable option in Brink to most people.’

yes it is, lots of people here already have servers, several have more than one

(Crytiqal) #69

I have asked this question many times already, since I fail to see how you can blur SP with MP when someone is playing solo on his PC and friends want to join.

He either has to host the entire thing on his PC, or he will be forced to migrate to a dedicated server, which imo is not “blurring SP and MP where people can pop in and out”.

However, there could be a difference between online SP and offline SP? lol?
I find it also akward to see it’s blurring the lines between SP and MP, since SP is essentially playing MP with bots :s

(Nail) #70

“since SP is essentially playing MP with bots”

what’s the difference with SP and SP with bots, aren’t the enemy in SP bots anyways ?

(LyndonL) #71

Thankyou Nail for finally saying what I cbf saying all this time when people have whined about SP not being SP cause it’s against bots.

(Nail) #72

I see it so often and don’t understand at all, what difference is there ?

It’s a couple dollars month per player. Cheaper than playing WoW.

There’s not a scripted story to follow through the mission. It’s quite different. That said, SP games tend to bore the hell out of me.

(Nail) #74

ahh, the scripted rinse and repeat linear spawn, kill emenies, get to point B start again thing

meh, rather have bots
I think the sooner they can let everyone know all the details about the files, how to set them up, rcon tools and the hardware to run it all the better…

Clans and gaming groups can then make definitive plans regarding supporting their own servers.
And GSP’s can determine if they need to bring more hardware onstream to fill the gap…

Leaving everything last minute just seems really odd with this game especially when you consider how much info Splash have released on a very regular basis about almost every aspect of this game…

Why leave all the info about dedicated server files and how to use them until just before the release?
They have been very publically stating that dedicated servers are with the game and yet when ever a question anywhere on these and other forums is put to them about the files etc they ignore it…

What’s the big secret?
Does any of this seem vaguely familiar? Hmm oh yea!!! We just went through this same thing with Homefront. And let me tell you!!! That went really well. As a matter of fact, just one month after release that game is almost completely dead! Current stats show there are 649 players online, with a peak of just over 1500 today. Not bad for a new game only a month old.

Where did they go wrong? Well they did exactly what Butch is asking about in this post. No real info about the servers. They finally release the server files a week later then stated. Game never had a proper public beta, just like Brink. Wow, the similarities are staggering, and a bit bothersome.

I am hoping to be able to support Brink, but as of now, they are not getting a pre-order from me, and I will be waiting to see how these forums blow up post release, BEFORE I consider buying this game. Been burned too many times…

(Nail) #76

ya mean it had nothing to do with the game sucking ?
just a lack of server info ?

wow, just wow…if only they knew

(ButchCassidy) #77

Well the thing here is that unless you can say you have personally played Brink and its way better than XXX game you don’t know if this game will suck as well?

HomeFront was marketed in a very slick way and showed a great deal of promise.
I personally like the game…So do many others but getting people to like a game and building up a solid playerbase for that game and then getting the support it needs to blossom and flourish are it seems very difficult.
As we have all seen with EA and MOH, Treyarch with CODBO and now Kaos/DE with HomeFront…Dev teams seem to be completely misjudging their abillity to manipulate the playerbase and basically support their games sparingly whilst maximising revenue.
Players these days simply walk away in droves at the slightest technical hitch or perceived game support failure.
As they have done with all three of the titles I have mentioned…

That is why I say that SplashDamge should be sticking the server info under our noses and saying “See we’re ready”…lol…
Due to the coming easter, may day and Royal wedding public holidays in the UK…
Splash Damage have a total of just 9 working days from tomorrow until release day in the USA.

I would have thought that the info for dedicated servers would now be at the point where it has to be released, especially if you want a great MP expreience on release day for the customers.

But hey, that’s just my opinion…

(Protector) #78

You are making alot of sense Butch don’t worry about some they seem to just argue a point for an extra post on their little counter… Lets just hope that when SD release the information its the information we want to hear.

(Herandar) #79

You guys get off from work for the f@(#ing wedding too? Ugh.

Totally agree. Badman, to give him credit where it’s due did at least respond with the following last night:

"We’ll definitely have more information on all of the server stuff before release. Waiting on a few last bits of information at the moment.

Also, I’d say that it’s totally and utterly legitimate to throw questions our way - it’s part of why these forums exist. Though as Neil says, we’re not always able to answer straight away. "
