How will Splash damage release PC dedicated server files?

(ButchCassidy) #1

There is a lot of talk about Dedicated servers for the PC but I have yet to find any information regarding how the files are to be released?
Yes I have searched and yes there are references in these forums to dedicated servers for PC but I have found no definitive answers as to how the files will be released or any information about how Brink servers will be set up.
With the release now moved forward there is very little time left for server admins to prepare their servers for the coming onslaught…lol

So with this in mind would it be possible for someone from Splash Damage to provide this information please?

i.e.

  1. Will the files be distributed via steams HLDS tool?

  2. Will the files be distributed via another means like via Bigdownloads etc

  3. or will the files be required to be uploaded to your server from your own copy of the game?

  4. Are Splash Damage going to release a wiki or dedicated web page on how to set up a PC dedicated Brink server?

Many Thanks

Good questions, would be cool if we get an answer on this

I would place money on HLDS (I hope so at least).

I think that option would be the most preferable for Server admins.
Easy to downlaod and install plus easy for updating.

Im also hoping they a have good “How To” on setting up servers from novice to advanced and I hope its real soon as time is dwindling and this info should really be being released around about now…

So fingers crossed…

4 weeks to go and nothing but speculation…In every forum I visit…
All i read is “Brink will be coming with dedicated servers on PC”
But it looks like no one actually knows a thing about how the dedicated server files will be released or how PC dedicated servers will be set up on dedicated boxes.
I don’t believe these are difficult questions, they should be easy enough to answer for Splash, if everything is already in place as it should be with just 4 weeks to go?

Fingers crossed we get some answers very shortly…

That’s still 4 weeks before NEEDING the answer. Let’s say 3 weeks, to have time to prepare it for the release, don’t you think ?

I wonder what kind of hardware and bandwidth per player is needed. I would like to experiment with my own home server before considering renting one. It would be nice if the server info was released before the game. If everyone gets time to prepare then there will be plenty of places the week of release. A lot of people have plenty of experience with this so an unofficial guide wouldn’t be far from release.

I think the sooner they can let everyone know all the details about the files, how to set them up, rcon tools and the hardware to run it all the better…

Clans and gaming groups can then make definitive plans regarding supporting their own servers.
And GSP’s can determine if they need to bring more hardware onstream to fill the gap…

Leaving everything last minute just seems really odd with this game especially when you consider how much info Splash have released on a very regular basis about almost every aspect of this game…

Why leave all the info about dedicated server files and how to use them until just before the release?
They have been very publically stating that dedicated servers are with the game and yet when ever a question anywhere on these and other forums is put to them about the files etc they ignore it…

What’s the big secret?

Just wanted to bump this thread as it has some great questions and is extremely important to a lot of PC player’s plans.

Time is getting short.

Wow. You have no idea how many threads are on this forum complaining about how little information has been provided on ‘almost every aspect of this game’. I guess the past month is very different from the previous years, but still…

There is a lot that we still don’t know about many parts of the game.

Leaving everything last minute is not only odd, it’s a dangerous game. As stated, GSP’s need to plan ahead, and clans would like to do the same.

And rather than the buzz being about how great this game is going to be, we’re starting to hear some negative press about a number of important unanswered questions. There is no reason for leaving these unanswered unless the answers themselves are going to be bad for sales, so read into that what you will.

I’ve spoken to a few GSP’s and they literally have no idea what’s going on. I’ve also contacted Splash Damage directly who, despite being courteous and replying, gave the answer “we are not releasing that information at the moment”.

I really hope I am wrong, but I smell bad apples of the Modern Warfare 2 P2P server outcry variety. Logically of course, with the game blurring the line between SP and MP, this makes sense but it’s not what PC gamers want.

If I had to take a stab in the dark, I’d guess Brink is all about P2P connections, with dedis being an alternative option. I hope I am wrong, for Brink’s sake.

I’m still waiting to be told otherwise, sadly.

Just because the masses don’t know, doesn’t meant to say GSP’s don’t know. They will more than likely be held under NDA and aren’t allowed to say anything… easiest way is to play dumb and say “we don’t know”.

(LyndonL) #13

Lots of major games release little or no details about their servers Even to GSPs up until the last week or even later. It’s not something unusual. Chillax Winston!

(SuperWaz) #14

I’ve asked if they know and can’t say anything. They literally have no idea.

(DarkangelUK) #15

I find it strange you think they’d spill the beans to random personage, but ok. Anyway AoW have been advertising for a while, but who knows what they do or don’t know.

(Diablo85) #16

Seeing as they offer 32 player publics (while BRINK is capped at 16) something tells me they don’t know much and just guess that there will be public dedicated server files.

(LyndonL) #17

You’re saying you don’t think that you will be able to tweak the game settings for things like max players??? I haven’t seen a game where that wasn’t changeable yet.

(Diablo85) #18

In my 10 years as PC FPS gamer most games had a build in hard cap that could not be tweaked. Think that hard cap is set at 16 for BRINK.

(Herandar) #19

It looks like the form the website has you fill out is a default, and it shows all options for all games, regardless of the cap.

(JeP) #20

Then for what I remember, you’re wrong. Max player are one of the things devs said you could tweak if I recall well.

But I’m too lazy to source it
