I sincerely hope US & EU will be able to play together, some of my best gaming memories are from playing overseas teams/individuals ages ago with far worse netcodes & internet connections that what we have nowadays (and on DB).
How we're planning to operate Dirty Bomb
If it will be splited, i see no reason to play. For me online games also good opportunity play with players from different parts of the world. For playing with guys from Russia and CIS only, i can go outside, and drink vodka or other sport game with them
As much as we want you guys to make a successfull game, we are very sad, if we wont be able to play with our friends from europe. If that’s whats is happening. I’m alpha testing in Russia and i had huge hopes that when game comes out i will be able to play in eu. please consider making an integrated all-over-the world sub client or smthng like this. dont split communities, guys c’mon!
Fixed it for you
It would be a shame if I could just play with NA&EU guys. I hope DB doesnt create seperate gaming rooms depending on the location you are.
Locking regions may sound good to some individuals (take dota 2 for example, where EU/US servers are flooded with people that can’t communicate in english). But if you lock regions you will divide the community, make friends unable to play together if they live in separate regions and severly cripple the competitive side of the community.
Why is everyone talking about split communities? I read the OP as a statement of intent, it tells us nothing about how any of that is going to be achieved.
Is it cloud-based? I read some interesting stuff today, and by chance, this is also my research field in studies currently. That is why i am so interested to know. I imagine it pretty much like this: there is no servers owned anymore, servers only get instantiated “on-the-fly” once the launcher matchmaking has decided to put some people into the match. This is quite the thing, if true.
Would be very pleased to know
Read already some interesting articles about performance, e.g. this => http://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=game%20server%20consolidation%20virtualization&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CFkQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intel.com%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2Fdoc%2Fcase-study%2Fvirtualizing-gaming-infrastructure-electronic-sports-leagues-study.pdf&ei=rJYCUruhMYXWPbisgcgD&usg=AFQjCNEwTGQJn0F_5sRfj5GkugNp3C9wTw&bvm=bv.50310824,d.ZWU
Yeah expect the worst as currently the russians already have a different version…
Yep, Anti has given some great updates but it was still nice to get one from you too badman, thanks, about how you are planning to “run the game”. You emphasize quality of service (e.g. reliable servers, localisation and living up to the local, cultural context), and it is all true and very important. (Btw, will we be able to set up/rent our own servers?) Doing this all by yourself would be a big burden, so I understand that you have decided to team up with other firms that specialises in country-adjusted content delivery, e.g. Destiny for Russia. (What is CIS by the way?) Having to work with several different firms around the globe will lead to some coordination and communication challenges, as you imply yourself, but I still think this is the right way to go. It will enable you to stay focused on your core business: making games. Thanks for your kind words about our feedback and impact. Game looks great so far and I am convinced it will be a hit. Next, the latest patch, and then, onwards to global success.
I was wondering if you plan on investing anything into Dirty Bomb e-sports or will that not be a priority?
Anyway, Badman mentioned SaaS, from that point of view the split up makes sense. But then again SD keeps full control over DB. As such probably we are going to have a global version. And depending on those “local” sellers, global servers or not. So one reseller might have global server and another not. Or maybe SD can define that as a requirement.
I wonder anyway how I will get my own community server, where I can run custom maps, and fool around.
dirty bomb reminds me of the good old times in ET, so I wouldnt mind making some room in my schedule for competitive DB matches
I play in North America and Europe. The rest of the world pretty much doesn’t exist to me…
