How we're planning to operate Dirty Bomb

(badman) #1

Anti’s already given a few pretty big status updates on Dirty Bomb’s development, but one of the things we haven’t really discussed yet is how we’re planning to run the game.

For a multiplayer shooter, quality of service is paramount. If the game servers around you aren’t reliable, if localisation is terrible, or if the game just doesn’t meet local cultural expectations (pay 2 win, anyone?), it pretty much eradicates your fun right there.

With that in mind, we’ve decided to partner up with operators around the world to make sure you can have the best possible experience near you. And because Dirty Bomb is self-funded, we’re able to select who to work with.

You’ve already seen Destiny doing their thing over in Russia and CIS. Those guys and gals are very excited about Dirty Bomb, and a big chunk of their crew has previous clan and eSports experience, which is great.

More announcements will follow soon. We’re choosing our partners very carefully based on both track record but also their passion for Dirty Bomb. Going this route also means we’re able to take advantage of their experience operating games as a service as well as their local and cultural knowledge. With this being our first shooter-as-a-service, we can’t pass that up if we want to ensure Dirty Bomb becomes a success.

Having multiple operators does present some challenges and side effects that we’ll work to resolve, but we think their expertise and past experience in the free-to-play market will more than outweigh these challenges in the long run. And on a rather important side note, you won’t lose any of your Founder’s Pack contents or special status within the Dirty Bomb community.

One other thing that’s worth pointing out is that while we will work closely with our partners to address local needs and wants, we retain full creative control over Dirty Bomb and have final say over what happens to gameplay, content, and so on. We’ve always envisioned Dirty Bomb as a fast-paced, balanced multiplayer shooter with depth, and changing that to something completely different isn’t on the table.

We’ll have more announcements about Dirty Bomb’s “live” operation in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, keep your Closed Alpha feedback coming. We can’t say this enough: you really have made a big impact on the game’s development so far, and we’re hugely thankful for your time and effort, as well as your financial support. Your continued input is massively important to us, and you’ll of course be first in line for the Closed Beta too. High-five, alpha testers!

Does relying on local operators necessarily imply that the community will be split, like Destiny & the russian client?

I can understand for support services & content translation but the “to adress local needs and wants” somehow foreshadows different versions of the game for the different regions.

(badman) #3

That is one of the challenges we’re working to resolve.

Can you give a few examples of partners so i can determine if i should be happy or sad

I hope perfect world entertainment is nowhere near this game >< or areia games.

So, basically you saying that Dirty Bomb will be split for regions, and players won’t be able to choose where to play. Is this correct?

(tokamak) #8

Yes and if you’ve ever had your server invaded by Brazilians you’re ever so grateful for that.

(Volcano) #9

i hope not otherwise it will die very quickly in aus

(Rengenius) #10

It’s compicated question, and it defenetly concerns only pub games. Think about competitive scene.

(tokamak) #11

I know. I just needed to vent how inconsiderate certain nationalities can be.

(badman) #12

We have no plans to ship Australians off to their own little island. Again.

(Finko) #13

If it will be splited, i see no reason to play. For me online games also good opportunity play with players from different parts of the world. For playing with guys from Russia and CIS only, i can go outside, and play football or other sport game with them
As much as we want you guys to make a successfull game, we are very sad, if we wont be able to play with our friends from europe. If that’s whats is happening. I’m alpha testing in Russia and i had huge hopes that when game comes out i will be able to play in eu. please consider making an integrated all-over-the world sub client or smthng like this. dont split communities, guys c’mon!

(Wezelkrozum) #14

You are basically asking the same question as MrFunkyFunk did. So this is the answer for now:

(Ruben0s) #15

Mulitple operators for a small player base, at least I don’t don’t think DB will have a big player base. If this will mean split community this game won’t last long.

(BomBaKlaK) #16

yep, true !

(en2ie) #17

Trying to understand this, does it mean that me being here in the UK will only be able to join UK servers?

I would never want to join a server with a high ping so that’s US, Russia, AUS etc - but Holland and Germany are close enough to have a good ping.

(Seiniyta) #18

I honestly would keep the number of partners very low to be honest. one for europe, one for US, the one for the RUS one. And that’s about it. I don’t really see a need for more then that anyway. It will only make it more complicated for SD too the more parties are involved.

I am not sure if i understand that: “as-a-service” is usually a buzzword in cloud computing. Now i may have missed that, since i don’t know how many gameservers are actually today hosted in the cloud, but does that mean you are basically relying on virtualized server environment to host servers on, with all the nitty features like elastic scaling, low cost of ownership?

If true, how will this apply to server admins. Will server admins exist like we are used to from older games, you know, with their own server and stuf.

This sounds so exciting, if i understood correct. But maybe i am just too overreacting and understood the word “as-a-service” in wrong context

Mixed feelings about this right now. As long as I can play vs teh Yanks every so often to kick their arse!
