How to Uninstall/Reinstall ET?

(schmeisser) #1

Et has become hopelessly borked on my machine. Constantly crashes, weird error messages, etc. I noticed that simply uninstalling ET does not remove the “Wolfenstein-Enemy Territory” file from Programs in the C drive. This file has etpro, etmain, shrub, all kinds of stuff, as well as tons of obsolete maps, junk files, etc. Should I delete this also and start with a clean slate? It’s a pain to have to re-download all this stuff every time I log onto a server, but what are my choices? I love the game, but it’s easily the most unstable program i’ve ever experienced. Advice?

In windows…

1.Click on ‘start’
2.Then click ‘My computer’
3.Then Click the ‘C Drive’ (in your case it is the ‘C drive’)
4.Then Click ‘Program Files’
5.Then within this folder you will find ‘Wolfenstein ET’ You can delete that file, but uninstall the game first.
Now Re-install.

As for the option of saving files so you don’t have to re-download maps again;
I suggest only saving maps that you know you will be using{and maybe the ETpro folder too}.
Follow steps 1-4 and then once you go into the ‘program files’ folder and find the ‘Wolfenstein-ET’ folder…click that to open it.
Now you need to find the ‘ETmain’ folder. The maps are within there, so open that too. You can just drag and drop the ones you need onto your desktop and then go to delete and re-install the game as stated above, create a new installation and replace the map files into the NEW ‘ETmain’ folder.

As for the instability issue…ET needs to be kept up on(organized) at a regular basis(every so often). Considering how many servers you can hop to and fro’ and some of them have admins that have no clue on how the settings or extra loads of junk files effect someones game/computer. Some time recently, I remember someone suggesting to someone to delete all files in ‘ETmain’ under 1 mb except for ‘mpbin’ and ‘pak1.pk3’, but I am assuming that you may not want to dip your fingers into that way as of yet.

Install to a different folder and then copy over everything you need (etpro, maps, config files). You can have multiple ET’s installed at the same time.

Thanks for the help m8’s. I checked my ETMAIN file, has literally hundreds of little 1kb files. I think I’ll save just the ETPRO stuff and bag the rest, since I have no idea where the buggy file is. If my problems persist, I’ll dump the ETPRO also and start clean.

You could try to tell windows to ‘sort by date’ or… ‘date created’ / ‘date modified’…
Then you can find the file that has been added last, and try to remove those. :o
