How to keep order on public servers ?

(BallsCutter) #1

I am looking for something similar to Adminmod for HL mods. Referee is not good idea for public servers. :banghead:

shrubmod has some excellent admintools if im not mistaken

as does etpro.

you can have ample admins, and an IRC channel they can be found at…

there’s also PB power thing, though very few people know about it so generally it isnt effective. however if you have a bunch of people you would like to have the ability to temporarily kick players, but would not like to give them full RCON or REF passwords, it’s an option if you set them up as PB deputies - see the PB admin manual found somewhere in “docs” folder or on evenbalance’s site; or alternately my scribblings on it.

else both shrub and etpro have semi-admin features.

Only two types of players come to mind as disruptive. The people who pull intentional TKs and the people who peck (shoot teammates once or twice with a pistol to lower their health, but not killing them).

The serial TKers can be dealt with via the complaint system. Put the complaintlimit at about 5 and the ipcomplaintlimit at around 3. If someone decides to panzer everyone at spawn, only 5 people have to complain to get them kicked from the server. And if someone is being a prick and constantly TKing a particular player, they only have to complain 3 times before the TKer is shown the door.

Regretfully there is no in game mechanic to check pecking players. You can enable voting and keep the threshold at 50% so players can vote these people off. Just keep in mind that the easier you make it for players to be voted off the server, you also make it easier for someone to “abuse” vote-kicks.

Hands down your best method is to have a group of players with ref abilities to “police” the server. Have a discussion with your new refs and set guidelines. In particular, come up with a kick, mute, and ban policy, specifying what types of behavior warrant what action. An inconsistently admined server is worse than no admins at all.

this reminds me, I had a ‘teammate’ on a public server walking into my mines 3 times in a row, deliberately, and complain afterwards, so instead of him getting kicked, I got kicked and couldn’t rejoin for 5 minutes… So there are some drawbacks to the 3 times complaint rule…

pb player power i think is derived from the guid of the player.
since in et the guid is not “coming” from a certain cdkey can we trust and use that feature?

(DG) #8

it wont work if your player changes his guid, but do you want to be giving admin abilities to people who have a need to keep changing guid?

I really doubt there would be a problem of another player getting the same guid unless he accessed the player’s files, guid is a big alphanumeric code with a lot of possible variations, i think part of it is even calculated on date/time. even more remote (unless intentional) would be for the player to even notice in order to be able to abuse it, even if (s)he wanted to.

But there is! It’s a shrubmod feature. Here’s the relevant documentation:

Team Damage Restriction
Version Added or Last Modified: 1.0
Documentation last modified: 03:55:28 AM Jul 14, 2003
g_teamDamageRestriction (0), when greater than 0, will set the threshold of team damage a player can inflict before being automatically kicked from the server. A minimum of g_minHits (30) hits (team or not) is required before a player is considered for a kick.

For example, if g_teamDamageRestriction is set to 25, a player will be kicked if, any time after inflicting some form of damage on another player 30 times, 8 of said hits are to teammates. Damage from the flamethrower and friendly mines is scaled down appropriately.

Clients may check their current hit counts with the command /damage.

This method will allow for team killers who merely shoot teammates to low health levels to be punished easily and also not harshly punish those who have, inadvertedly or not, made the one hit that kills a teammate.

This feature can also be coupled with disabling the complaint system (g_complaintLimit 0). With an appropriate g_teamDamageRestriction setting, the lack of arguments related to complaints improves the server atmosphere tremendously.
