How To Deafeat The Phantom - Tips

(MTLMortis) #1

I just got done playing a few hours versus a lot of Phantoms. All this while playing Proxy, whom everyone keeps saying is the absolute worst Merc versus Phantom. My consensus thus far is that all the crying is much ado about nothing.

Here is the surefire method that I’ve used successfully over many hours of game play. Tried and tested versus up to level 20 Phantoms. Solo. Most of the encounters I had no teammates anywhere near me.

:: DEFEATING PHANTOM ::

  1. LISTEN. The Phantom cloak makes a an extremely distinctive and very loud hum. There is no possible way to miss it. After a few encounters you will recognize it immediately.

  2. WATCH FOR THE HAZE. The cloak isn’t completely invisibility. It is very noticeable while moving.

  3. SHOOT THE HAZE. The enemy health indicator will light up and 1 more hit and he’s uncloaked.

  4. KEEP MOVING. He is a melee specialist and will try and close the distance, keep backing up

  5. SPREAD OUT. If you hear or see a Phantom then spread out, clumping up will only give him a multikill if he closes the distance. In Battlefield we call this combat spacing.

That’s it. That is the entirety of dealing with Phantom. Yes, he’ll get kills, but he brings nothing to the table in terms of objective completion. If people are aware of their surroundings, and you should be in any fps, then they’re not that big a deal.

Thanks for the tips! I’m interested to see how this game’s balance dynamic works out when the balance is constantly changing so much. For example, when Aimee comes out, she has that recon stuff too, so Phantom will be in even more trouble. I stand pretty neutral in Phantomgate 2015 or whatever, but I’m a casual so don’t listen to me.

I feel like this assumes he just wants to chop you up.

(murkyCook) #4

not sure what haze you’re talking about, earlier today I wanted to disarm the c4 then I found a phantom sitting on it, I did not see any haze …

(Keelin) #5

These are good tips, and you do get used to dealing with him. Really, he isn’t that bad. The only time he pisses me off are instances like what murky had, where he just camp areas.

The “haze” I believe is the distortion he makes when moving. I don’t know if he is completely invisible when not moving but he might be. It is super annoying because of how fast moving in this game is, it is so easy to just blur by him and then you’re dead.

With that said, he doesn’t really fit the game imo…

SO THAT WAS THE BLOODY HUMMING SOUND…

I thought it was something outside my window .

LMAO so did I !

Once his cloak is down he’s not hard to deal with.
You can even paddle him to death when it’s down !(SUPER SERIEAL!)

He’s not a melee specialist. He’s a short/mid range fighter with incredibly engage, disengage and effect hp. The fact that he can also go stealth and 1hk a lot of classes just makes him more of a pubstomper in addition to being probably THE best mid-range engager currently.

His effective health also allows him to gap close and mow long ranged targets down with the KEK or Croz. I have no issues with his stealth or his melee ability, those are the easiest aspects to counter. It’s the good players that primarily use SMG and constantly utilize his cloak for actual combat/peaking that are the problem.

I tried to play him like this yesterday - nothing happened that wouldn’t have worked as shotgun-proxy twice as good, if you get to kill 5 people, you get to do that as proxy (and Aura!) as well.

How would you use the cloak “for actual combat”? It has a fairly long initial animation, needs time to work fully, and goes complete away when you do something offensive.

I got owned by few Phantoms yesterday already. I will keep an eye on that cloak sound, thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately, I have problems seeing that shadow mist of him as well. I think this feature probably force more people tweaking down gfx details just to make this shadow trail more visible.

As I am thinking what I did wrong yesterday, I may have an idea. I starting to shoot as soon as I spotted him, thus putting half a clip into him while he was still in the uncloaking process. I guess his shields are still active while he is uncloaking ?

IF so, then good approach would be to fire 1-2 bullets, then wait half a sec for him to uncloak and only after this moment, I should fire full mag into him…

I guess… Need to try it tonight ;D

I plan to “defeat” phantom by seeing if overwatch has any shitty stealth mechanic based game ruiners planned to be playable

  1. You sure that’s his cloak humming and not him being a nerd? Seriously he hums when he uses his cloak cause he’s a total nerd.
  2. I like calling it a Shadow but yes. The Shadow betrays him. Even if he’s standing still it’s barely visible but if you’re preceptive enough you can catch him off guard.
  3. Not completely true. His cloak gives him extra health proportion to the duration of his cloak. He also loses duration everytime he is hit. I think you were just lucky to hit him when his cloak was low. But when his cloak is at full he can take multiple rounds before his cloak breaks and by then he can get into cover.
  4. While this isn’t accurate either it is still good advice. Nine times out of ten the player using Phantom will have his melee equiped to give himself a slight speed boost and because he wants to look cool (how does an invisible man LOOK cool?).
  5. This is good advice in general, not just against Phantom. Nader, Fragger, Rhino, Fletcher, even Proxy (as well as Stoker and Thunder when they add him) do the most damage when you clump together. Further apart you are the less likely you’ll get wiped. (Also, a good Vassi can get at least two to three kills if you’re too close.)

His name is Reaper. From what I understand he can go incorporeal as well as teleport. He has duel shotgun pistols and he goes all gunkata with his ult.

Well, I’ll be avoiding that game like the plague then. But while it may be bubonic, this one could still turn out to be pneumonic.

(frzn) #15

His incorporeal thing makes him immune to damage but he can’t attack while it’s up and he’s still visible. None of the announced characters have stealth afaik.

Good tips I’d like to add another general one. Watch each others back. leaving your engineer alone with the objective while TDMing somewhere else was a bad idea beforehand. But now is the recipe to ensuring that he can never do his job 100% of the time. If the enemy has a Phantom you gotta watch out for your VIPs (Engineer, Medics, Vassili).

Thats what I like about him he enforces teamplay, if you all go lonewolf, he will pick you one by one. Some decent spotting, crossfire and he is not that much of a problem.

(MTLMortis) #17

Volume of his cloak seems to be somewhat muted on Underground. Either that or mr sneaky was using batman drop from the top engages. That’s where I had the most difficulty vs Phantoms, the other maps I played seemed fine.

(azureScene) #18

I feel ze best gun against the phantom is the semi-auto sniper. just my opinion

It clearly says that it can be seen while moving.

I feel the best gun against Phantom is the minigun.
