How to add mouse acceleration to ET:QW

(sk4ut) #1

I do not play ET:QW anymore (viva BFBC2!) but for those who left, this may be interesting:

Most folks like to turn mouse accel off .

I remember my frustration when I searched the Internet for “how to add mouse acceleration to direct input game” and every result I found was about removing acceleration.:frowning:

Now in the Internet there will be at least one page, which will tell how to do just the opposite, and in a controlled way.

Mouse accel is bad news when flying.

For those who are not used to it, yes.

It offers less control in FPS games in general. I disabled windows mouse accel quite a while ago and so have most others. I don’t know why you would want it, but I was fairly sure that windows mouse accel transferred over into QW already. I can’t imagine it being any higher.

Man, you are as ignorant on this topic, as you are highly skilled in ET:QW.

There is no windows accell “transfered” into ET:QW because it uses either DirectInput or raw input mouse interfaces. Windows mouse accel influences only games which use standard win32 mouse API (like, CS 1.6). Although, it also may be your mouse or mouse drivers - some of them have built in positive acceleration.

Second, regarding less control. With mouse accel style 1 I can have mouse sensitivity allowing both very precise aiming while moving my mouse very slow (like 1 degree per centimeter, good for sniping from far away) and very fast aiming when moving it fast (like 360 degrees per 5 centimeters moved, good for overall movement). Also, there is variety of choices in between. This is definitely more of control, not less. Of course, it takes time to train your brain to work with it, but it is not that big, you just need some determination and self-confidence.

Anyway, if you don’t need it - why trying to convince others that they don’t need it too?

Windows accel was present in ETQW for me on Vista x64. I know it was because it became very obvious when I turned it off . And for the record I know what accel does, but if you look at all the “pros” they turn it off so that they have a consistent sensitivity, and although it might take a larger mouse pad to use, it is solid. I don’t care if you like accel, but I am just saying that most people don’t really want it and it seems to be active already for some ^ eL oh eL :). Also this might be easier for those with non-generic mice that provide you with plenty of override with the software.

In a fast game with lot of tracking having mouse accel on sounds like a serious disadvantage.

(sk4ut) #10

ET:QW is somewhat fast paced game (comparing to BFBC2 :)), with most of the combat done in close quarters. So for this game simple mouse config is sufficient. But for BFBC2 it is beneficial to have both pixel precision for long range shots done in a fast and reliable way, as well as ability to do very quick moves in CQC.

Lets look at my accel config. Using this script I can move crosshair for 360 degrees either using 1 meter of my mouspad or just about 6 centimeters, depending on the speed of my hand. What it gives? Precision or speed with single mouse configuration depending on situation in game.

Anyway, guys, I’m not trying to sell it to everyone - accel users are of a special breed. But I hope that some person here, who really needed it and was unable to find it ingame, will be able to add good amount of power into his config using this small utility.

And BTW, did you ever try to use accel in games like Quake 3 or QuakeLive?

(Szakalot) #11

Yeah, i did before i found how to turn it off - that was also the moment ive seen a drastic improvement in tracking ability.

(sk4ut) #12

Having unwanted accel in your setup does not mean that you really tried to learn how to use its advantages. Also, Windows accel sucks.

I know ETQW and Quake 3/Live are different games but there is no question that some of the very best if not THE best “aimers” in competitive FPS gaming are the top level pro quake 3/live players. If you take a look at almost every single top quake 3/live player’s config, you will see at least a little mouse accel. Just saying…
