How does ET know where each player is from?

Hi guys

I use VPN while I play ET but im seeing somewhat interested to notice that when I connect to UK server ET says im from NL. But every IP check website says UK. Once I was connected to Swedfn ET says in game im from USA obviously I wasnt since I had 40-50 ping and if Id have been connected to USA i should have had ping over 100. Other time ET simply showed flag with “???”

So how does It work?

This is what all major mods use: http://www.maxmind.com/en/geolocation_landing

Both servers might have different (outdated) databases.

I forgot to say its nitmod server? If thats any related?

It’s not. It depends in all mods (?) on geoip.dat which admins can upload/update themselves whenever they want. Here’s the latest package:

The VPN probably messes it up.
I haven’t heard any other complaints regarding GEOIP database.
