Tell me your thoughts on it. I have seen a bunch of threads on it so I am aware of what the general feelings are about it but would like to hear more.
How Do You Like The New Lobby?
A few of what people said is missing were just not enough to convince me to revert back to what there was, the argument of “Which side I am” and “Where I am” are stuff to add and not revert back to what it was.
Also the “Chat is too big” argument doesn’t really make sense since what else can you put there that won’t over flood us with useless info and generally before comp matches start I miss some messages with the last layout but this one I don’t.
And now to tackle the “Now we can’t balance by ourselves” is just bullshit, I seriously never saw a player switching team to balance or even switch team at all it mostly was for:
- playing with friends
- Not getting rekt next round and become the recker
Sure you can’t play on the side your friends at but just make a private server or play stopwatch.
The new pre-game lobby is really bad, I can’t play with my friends any more! (and I won’t go in competitive as I really hate that mode). For “balance”, there were already “Max level 5” servers for newbies.
The “choose map” duration is really too short.
The old lobby was 200% better.
I dunno, I’m not noticing that much of things I either hate or love. I like how at least you can just switch your loadout without having to reselect he merc!
Could your name be somehow highlighted after the teams are assigned in the lobby? (Unless I’m blind and something like this already existst)
Obj pubs were incredibly more balanced last night due to sorting being done at the end of the lobby instead of the beginning. I still wish it was done with everyone on server before a round starts but this is definitely better in regards to getting teams more evenly balanced.
However, it does take away one of the two ways to easily play on the same team with friends. Which I can see some people being upset with as they hate going against their friends in MP games. It will definitely be a pretty big sore point for some.
We’re still figuring some things out to improve Matchmaking as a whole + playing with friends.
I don’t like it. I really think the old one was much better looking. Some parts of the lobby UI are actually too small, like mercs used for each players : it’s pretty bad for the eyesight. The new system prevents me to see what mercs other people are using until the right last moment, which prevents some teamplay addicts to adapt to their own team.
It’s annoying to try to play with friends in objective gamemode now. The system also does not seems that efficient as one is still able to switch teams in the middle of a match (and obviously it won’t be to fill a hole on the loosing team’s camp).
The only problem I have with the new lobby is not being able to select your mercs after teams are locked. I generally don’t give a crap about what other people are using in pub games. But I will switch mercs based on offense or defense and others WILL switch based on what their team has.
My solution is to lock teams and then allow 15 seconds or so to swap mercs. To be honest I thought this was pretty obvious. So I am kind of surprised it didn’t ship this way.
Hate is too strong so I have to elaborate: I love the UI changes overall, it looks good. My only UI criticism is that when you click the map you’re voting on there isn’t enough of a visible and audible change to indicate you’ve voted, but that’s a tiny thing.
As far as playing with friends goes, though, the changes were terrible. I understand that it might help stop people from stacking teams and pubstomping, but it also stops friends (who might not even be very good as a team, but enjoy the experience more) from playing the way they want. Understand the justification but I still personally dislike it.
Pubs are a lot more balanced - but one issue I have is the insanely short time for map selection… I’m barely on the screen and the next map has been selected xD
I personally I don’t mind playing with or against friend in pub lobbies, both are just as fun - in fact, I would argue it’s not really fair having gangs of coordinated groups going up against randoms, but it’s nothing major :3
The new UI’s seem to load a lot faster too (I noticed this when we had the new shop update with the Phoenix update), so that’s always nice. I personally also love the fact that it doesn’t sort teams until the match is about to actually start - this makes things a LOT more balanced.
While the complaints, I suppose, are valid about merc choices before a round, I don’t feel any sympathy for them.
Playing in stopwatch you expect to play on both defense and offense, but you don’t get to change your mercs at half time. So bring what you would bring to a stopwatch game and then simply asking for a feature to have different squads for offense and defense.
It would be neat to see 6 merc choices(2 rows of 3) on the lobby screen to take up some of that space. One row for offense and one for defense.
However, for the time being I would just say suck it up. It is a teething problem that should be resolved. That whole unexpected consequences thing.
People demanded matches be more balanced. People demanded that wait times were shorter. Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. And in defense of the playerbase, SD should think about the consequences of their changes before implementing them as well. It is definitely normal for SD to do things without enough USER testing first, so maybe they simply didn’t realize how adversely it might affect merc selection. They pass through sqa and do some in house testing afaik, but beyond that it seems lacking.
I know this is a tricky thing but…why does it matter if I wanna play with my friends on a public server? And it causes problems with matchmaking?
I can understand you want to have fair games but there’s no way to have it both ways. Either you screw over people who just wanna play with their friends casually, or you screw over the team balance.
The way I see it the pub servers are casual environments. We shouldn’t be trying to enforce as many rules as that jsut creates frustration and drives away players. I mean, we don’t have merc limits on pubs and yet that’s a standard in cups and tournaments.
So I think there needs to be a clear distinction, and I think people who want balanced games on pubs, need to just simply learn how to play. A large majority of the problems I see have nothing to do with levels and everything to do with lack of knowledge on how everything works in game.
Love the new UI and love the new balance system on Objective. I hope the devs will extend it to stopwatch also.

How convenient. And i’d say screw those that want to play with friends, go play private, stopwatch or competitive. If it was for me i would apply the same change to stopwatch as well. Why the whole community have to suffer with horrible matchmaking which lead to spawnkilling because a few want to stack the teams? Go play stopwatch, since the change the games are so much more balanced it’s silly. This is the right direction and this change has to stay, like it or not.
Already many times I’ve seen new people in the lobby and they say something on the lines of “What! I can’t even play with my friends?” and then I hope they don’t leave the game and never come back because of that.

Because it’s a CASUAL environment, why should people who just want to play for the sake of having fun have to play in a competition?
You’re painting a stereotype of people who want to play with their friends as just simply wanting to win, and that’s pretty terrible imo. Sure, everyone wants to win, but a lot of people simply want to play with those they know, people they know they can rely on.
Punishing people for wanting to do that only hurts your player base, it does NOT help them at all. Save matchmaking for when wins and losses matter, in a pub environment it simply doesn’t. All level means is how long have you been playing, it has nothing to do with skill or how many times you’ve won a game.

So now you can play with friends in 2/3 modes, instead of 3/3. Meanwhile solo queuers now have 1 mode that’s sorta balanced instead of 0. Don’t play a victim here.
The only reason why I picked ‘‘hate it’’ is because it’s way harder to play friends now… I do like the look of it but it’s also hard to tell whenever I’m defending or attacking.
