How CSGO became the 2nd most played game on steam.

Good read and practices that can certainly be applied to DB/xT/??. New content spiking player levels is a given, but I was surprised at how much of a spike major tournaments gave, and how it affected player retention afterward.

Tournaments, though, have produced the most substantial upticks in concurrent users, presumably due to the fact that CS:GO allows players to watch competitive matches in the game client in real-time.

A lot of this stuff has already been suggested, but this article really highlights the importance of certain features such as being able to watch live matches in game.

I tweeted pretty much the same thing thing the other day, I guess PCG wanted to write a bit more about it

We’re looking at CSGO very closely. They’re doing a great job.

good read.

seems like e-sport is the most important factor for new users and retention.
Cant wait to see what u guys are planing for xT

I wonder if CS:GO is to blame for Defense Grid 2 delay. Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Funny how Steam mentions only Valve as CS:Go developer, completely forgetting Hidden Path.

HAHAHA Boom! Love it

Valve are pretty much the only people keeping it real with no ironsights. For that reason alone they get my love.

So what we could learn of the success of csgo :

  • Items (Community creations, shop, customization)
  • Esport
  • Sales.
  • Good Matchmaking.
  • The game is well optimized and don’t need a powerfull computer (Like league of legends).

bravo, Erkin. Sums up CS:GO pretty good.

here was an “article” about csgo
its worth checking comments^^

As I recall correctly the introduction of esport cases draw lot ppls attention, even I got the collect fever^^ But if you ask ppl most of them would answer they would pick 1.6 or css over GO. Cause either they dont like movement or shooting. CSGO is kinda a mix of both. Still the comp scene got great lan support and lots of lan events with prize money. All the comp support was dropped for 1.6 and css, so ppl were forced to play GO who want competition.

this might be interesting

dunno if this was tweaked again, but still a got approach imo

Large tournaments also attracted (and retained) a lot of new players.

Mainly because Hidden Path developed the initial version of the game, which was garbage, and Valve took over development and updated it to where it’s at currently.

Also in regards to developing XT. It’s much safer and a lot smarter to make a well-developed game first, before marketing it as an “esport”. Marketing Brink as an esport before the initial release was a mistake. Learn from past examples, rather than just taking one successful model and adapting it to fit your own game. This same situation hit Tribes:Ascend before and Hi-Rez quickly learned that it wasn’t a smart idea and eventually dropped the game.

CS has improved it’s support of Twitch.tv.
Not, you can filter the streaming by maps, and more important, by the ingame skill rank :

(Protekt1) #15

I’ve always found watching cs on twitch to be the most boring thing I can do with my time.

(Tandem) #16

It’s very anti-climactic, possibly the most un-interesting fps to watch.
I have a feeling it’s more fun to play than spec tho & I’ll probably pick up the game for a try.

All the skins are silly and I’m not sure if that ranking system translates to skill.
Biggest attractions are the #of teams +prize $$.

(prophett) #17

The betting system is also great;

(xdc) #18

no cs game will ever beat its own classic… cs 1.6.

also this game should have shots through walls (wood, etc)

(INF3RN0) #19

CSGO did finally succeed at consolidating both its CS 1.6 and CSS player basis quite well though.

I can agree with all of those, the last two are rather huge.
But if I can could one it would be:
Few but Great maps. Much like Dota, and I guess now Moba’s in general you don’t need a lot of different maps, just few great ones.(doesn’t mean you can’t reskin the same map if it plays amazing) I mean, how long has CS played de_dust 2? and dota has played on the same map(tweaks ofc) for 10+ years.
