How Come Alpha Stage of Dirty Bomb's Graphics Changed So Much?

(XavienX) #1

I mean, just look at it. Especially how the dynamic shadow/lighting worked. The game had a less cartoony look to it than to now. I’m confused why the dynamic lighting got reduced so much?

I much prefer what we have at the moment. It’s easy on the eyes while not being too bland, doesn’t look like any other shooter out there and has a nice colour palette.

Because it was being developed…?

(Jostabeere) #4

That shader would be painful after hours to look at.

(XavienX) #5

…Well…seems like we need a Dev or a founder to answer this.

Watching that video is like watching an alternate universe version of Dirty Bomb.

It definitely looks like somewhere down the line some major designs decisions were made. It would be neat to get somebody to tell the history of how the game developed and how it played back then.

Definitely looks better now, that alpha looks painfully sluggish to me.

Mhm, it’s just that the graphics intrigue me so much, it feels a bit more realistic.

I much prefer the way the game is now with it’s less serious overall look and tone. I’m sure I’ll be corrected and this is only my guess…but I would wager at some point they realized that the game looked way too much like a serious military shooter yet wanted to market itself as a game that was supported by its character personalities and abilities (the mercs). And it’s much harder to come up with interesting personalities, back stories and even abilities if you’re going for the “grim dark serious military” look.

So I’d wager they made more of a shift towards the lighter look the game has today because it’s simply a better platform for creativity and possibly because the look might appeal to more people overall as well.

Good point, but I mean, the realisticness and how good it looks just kinda doesn’t make any sense why the Devs would just throw most of that away.

Don’t see how developers make much money out of that on steam. Nowadays a lot of people on steam goes for the cartoonish type. I also prefer the one we have now. Realistic games makes me headache. I think.

(Aazhyd) #12

Interesting to see, but I think It’s better now.

Largest graphics overhaul ever was seen in Borderlands, where late game development decided to switch from realistic to cartoon-like. That was an excellent decision, making the game stand out from all those hyperrealistic FPS-clones.

It’s one of the things I like about DB, it stands out from the crowd. Not another CoD-clone.

Honestly I don’t see more dynamic lightning in that vid I see less.
Sure it has more dramatic shadows.
But as far as I can tell most of it are static lightmaps. Compare that to the almost full dynamic lightning we have now (switch between dynamic light on and off to see what I mean) most noticable imo. no selfshadowing/enviroment shadowing on the weapons. Mercs simply get dimmed when they enter shadows (old lightmap trick) most notable on one of the Vassilis. Only thing that seems to catch dynamic shadows from the enviroment is the EV when it passes a bridge.

As far as style goes it makes sense the game is far from being realistic now and the artstyle informs everyone of that.

(LifeupOmega) #14

I’d still like to see the rest of Bridge, that looked pretty interesting.

(XavienX) #15

Still no exact answer .-.

(Ardez1) #16

My guess is that it looked too much like a battlefield/CoD clone. It doesn’t look very unique in the video above, just another cookie cutter shooter.

My thoughts are that it is better the way it is now. A more distinctly unique experience.

(Eox) #17

I wish I could play with Gordon Freeman Beta Fragger. His skin looked neat.

(Ardez1) #18

So are you trying to get a decent answer or a real reason? I think you might need to go to the devs for this one. You should ask on their forums. The Nexon forums likely will not have you answer if you don’t accept anything already posted.

(XavienX) #19

I guess, it’s just that it’s surprising how they changed the atmosphere that much. Cause mostly right now it’s just answers due to guesses and observations.

This and some lore to the game would be nice. Not that lore is that important, but it’s fun.
