Hosting a server...Help!

(crumblycake) #1

I am trying to host a game conecting to my IP address on ET. But every time I do my friends are unable to connect to my IP address. It just sits there “waiting to connect” I am in Japan and my friends are in the US. I am thinking that might have something to do with it.

Any suggestions?

It could have something to do with it, but it can allso be thatyou’re network is not configured as it should or that you’re running a local dedicated server.

Try dedicated 2, and are your friends putting a port number after your IP? The default is 27960.

maybe they’re trying to connect to your home-ip adress?
at www.mijnip.nl you can see your real ip adress

My suggestion is to tell us how you connect to the internet.

Are you using a “broadband router”, and what about software firewalls?

Sauron,

I have an ADSL service though yahoo BB. I am renting their ADSL modem that has four imputs for other computers to contect to. I guess it’s a router modem. I do have firewall set to on. But as far as firewall software, I don’t have any that I am aware of. What kind of firewall software are you talking about? Maybe I have something on there that I am not aware of…

If you are running XP, open task manager… if alg.exe is running then you have XP’s firewall on. Other software firewalls you would have to download and install.

Your problem probably has to do with the firewall. Easiest test is to turn it off for 5 minutes and then trying with your friends. If it is the problem, there are numerous sites with info on how to setup a firewall, and posts above this have some good links. Don’t listen to people who say ‘just turn off your firewall’, with a little patience any firewall can be setup correctly to run any game.

Thanks, I will try that too…I did turn off firewall at one point, but I didn’t wait five minutes. Also, when I set up to host a game thoughr my IP, I chose the bobots capmpaign and added 4 bots on each team. When trying to host a game for the first time, should I even try to run server with a combination of bots and “real” players?
