Honest initial impressions

(Cornboss) #1

I had been posting on the forums a few hours before launch. I bought this title because I had nothing better to do and it seemed like a good time. I was optimistic and was hoping for a cool TF2 replacement.

Here are my observations … I really tried to like the game. I swear I am not jaded and love a good video game.

After playing for 5 hours here are my thoughts …

** The Good**

  • The team based / objective gameplay

  • The guns are made up and seem powerful with enough recoil to make aiming a skilled affair combined with the large health pools

  • The class system is fun and diverse

  • The freedom of movement is nice although not as good as I had hoped

  • I like the vibe and art style

** The Bad **

  • The cosmetic customization is pointless … this is an FPS

  • The single player modes are trivial at best (no big knock I was expecting a MP game here)

  • The sound is absolutely terrible even though an IGN interview made me think Splash Damage had an amazing sound guy … this is no Bad Company 2 … by a huge friggin longshot

** The Conclusion **

Well that doesn’t sound like too bad a game eh?

  • So what if the customization is pointless to me (others may care)

  • So what if the SP is lacking? (I don’t care about the SP)

  • So what if the sound isn’t as good as Bad Company 2 … most games sound isn’t nearly as good which is why it stands out … again, no biggie.

Why do I hate this game? (Oh I haven’t told you that I think this game sucks yet sorry)

Well the game is terrible because the maps are ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC! Yeah that’s right. You pretty much nailed all the major FPS conventions on the head and then some but you TOTALLY FAILED on the maps.

For a game that emphasizes freedom of movement or “parkour” (SMART … whatever) you insult us by giving us 8 maps (which is by far too few this day and age) and the 8 maps we do get are designed with the intention of “Hey, lets fight in a tiny hallway with no flanking options”

The maps and ultimately the game ends up feeling like Killzone 2 … which if you didn’t play or don’t remember every map was a massive chokepoint just like Brink.

WHY WHY WHY WHY??? You give us SMART, well done weapons, awesome classes … and you want us to shoot it out in a hallway? WHAT THE HELL? We should be leaping off of rooftops and across scaffolding … This is pathetic and I have already uninstalled.

You have my 50$ but I promise you that I have stopped thousands with the sharing of my experiences. Poor products do not deserve success and while I admire the innovation whoever designed your maps is a schmuck … but even more of schmuck is the guy that approved them.

SHAME ON YOU. :frowning:

(tokamak) #2

You already went through all the maps?

(Hyrage) #3

I haven’t play the game yet, but let’s hope DLC maps offer more flanking options then…

Implying 20 ****ty maps is better than 8 amazing maps (:
Quality not quantity and to be honest Brink seems like a ton of Quality to me (:

(Cornboss) #5

Yes, I have been playing non stop since the midnight launch and I even had fun once or twice.

The striking this is this … all the vids I watched had these open, awesome maps that just screamed … CLIMB AND RUN ALL OVER ME!

However all I saw was “Hey we are in a hallway lets fight!”

Honestly not a troll guys, blown away by the failure that is the map design. I have no training in level design whatsoever but I could honestly make 8 better maps in under 6 months all alone with only google to aid me in my training.

ITS THAT BAD

I promise you that I’m still going to play this game with the copies I bought, Paul Revere.

(Angrim) #7

Do you realize flanking options become available by completing secondary objectives on many of the maps in the pool?

Not saying that definitely fixes your problem with the maps - just wanted to point it out just in case.

I’d rather have 20 crap maps than 8 crap maps, sorry.

(Spez) #9

I for my part don’t understand the people saying “there are no flanking options”.
Every map i played so far had a lot of chokepoints BUT there was ALWAYS a way to get behind the enemy.
It seems to me like many players are not patient enough to learn the maps before complaining about them.

“You have my 50$ but I promise you that I have stopped thousands with the sharing of my experiences”

You haven’t stopped me.

I bought Battlefield: Bad Company 2 when it was eight maps and not all of them were playable per game mode.

I’ve played the S&@# out of that game for two years.

(TAPETRVE) #11

Go ahead, I dare you. I dare you for your dear life. If you suck, I will kill you. On your own maps.

(Cornboss) #12

While I admire the Paul Revere reference you haven’t responded to the OP at all.

Also, “copies” … can you play multiple games at once or did you buy the extras for your friends? I don’t get it.

(ThePilgrim101) #13

That’s kind of like saying, “I’d rather eat three piles of bullcrap as opposed to a small nibble.”

You realize how “special” that is, right?

(Cornboss) #14

This makes absolutely no sense. Are you threatening me personally? And yes, I could make better maps with absolutely no training. Whoever made these maps obviously had none … and whoever approved them had even less training / experience … your post is pathetic.

I think perhaps you are the “special” one here. 20 great maps is better than 8 great maps. 20 terrible maps is better than 8 terrible maps … learn some math.

(Cornboss) #16

Either way, the posting population seems to have the cumulative intelligence of a soil sample on this site as indicated by some of the trollish responses this post got. The maps suck period. If you don’t agree you are failing to see the potential that Brink had as a MP team based FPS with parkour.

These responses make me revile the community and the game even more.

Eat your heart out fanboys, there won’t be a community left given time, no DLC can fix initial failure.

See ya.

/signs off forever

(Angrim) #17

Yeah well - I guess people are not convinced the maps are that bad only because some random guy on the internet tells them they are? Honestly, Splash Damage has a track record of decent to pretty good maps in their games. We know they hired at least one well known map designer to work on Brink so things are more likely to have improved.

Also judging maps after just a few hours of playtime at best is nearly never a good idea.

Personally I only played Container City and it looked like a pretty good map on a first glance (got a strong W:ET Goldrush vibe from it).

I challenge you to make just 1 map in under 6 months when the editing tools get released and for it to be better than the stock maps.

(TAPETRVE) #19

Eight maps, six months. The eyes of the community rest upon you.

(Angrim) #20

This guy turned from someone who prematurely judged the maps to a crying baby that already made up his mind about a multiplayer game and its community after playing for some hours.

Can’t say I am sad he is gone.
