Hitch warning: *** msec frame time

(Kamel) #1

well, i’ve been looking and everyone seems to always get this thing when you first start ET for the log… but has nothing to do with their problem, so it’s kindof hard to research what this actually means.

i am assuming (although hoping not) that this error means that the processor is not capable of processing everything it needs to at that time.

the problem is… i have an excellent pinging server, with nice constant operation, but every 5 mins or more it all the sudden give everyone connection interrupted. looking in the console, i notice this:

Hitch warning: 686 msec frame time
Hitch warning: 591 msec frame time
Hitch warning: 668 msec frame time
Hitch warning: 514 msec frame time

does anyone know what this is, or what i can do about it, or if it is a processor problem, is there a way to make et use less cpu cycles by disabling certain things?

thanks for the help in advanced… sorry i’m sure this is a repost, but try looking for Hitch warning: and see what you get =\ lol.

Your guess is about right… It means, quite literally, that a frame took (for example) 686 ms to run (which isn’t so good, since there’s supposed to be a frame every 50ms on the server.)

Some of the more likely causes:[ol][]The server is underpowered. ET can’t keep up with all the clients you have on the server. You can try lowering the max number of clients to see if the problem goes away.[]Something else on the server is eating CPU or thrashing the disk, so ET can’t get enough CPU, can’t poke at the swap file, read game data, or whatever.[*]If you’re running a mod, it’s possible that some feature uses a lot of CPU, and several people are triggering it at once.[/ol]Judging from the symptoms you’ve described, it sounds like it’s probably #2. Not enough information, though.

just adding that it’s pretty normal to have a hitch warning when you load up the server, just shouldnt still be having the warnings after that. Figured worth noting since some people setting up their first dedicated server dont expect just the console and assume the hitch warning has meant the server isnt running

I’d suspect #2 in your case also, check for other programs running and try killing any you dont need.
