Hi, don't sell out like EA did (in game advertising)

(Lanz) #41

Would it be really THAT annoying to you people

Yes it would because it would not stop there. I hate ads with a vengance. I stop ads from showing in my broswer, I stop spam from staying in my inbox for more than 3ms, I stop the mail man from delivering useless ads in my mail box, I block telemarketers from calling me on my phone and I certainly do not buy games that includes them. I do not pay good money for a game to be spammed by ads, intrusive or not.

(carnage) #42

An advert from someone who actuly was involoved in making the game is more likely to come across more as a joke or an easter egg. If you look at RosOne’s image then its not exactly screaming and getting your attention. and i hardly would think that that advertisment would have a posative impact for the company being on the front of such a small grotty building

as for using advertisments from things that woud fit the scene e.g. pepsi machines. then if they are in the game then why not. but i can only see that leading to the point where there are three vending machines in the game and sponsor X wants 7-8+++ so steps start being taken that are not in the interest of making the game better. also this is very circumstancial to the game etc and in reality only game in the present or near future could realy accomodate for such adds. so does that mean the all games will now be set in modern urban centers to cram in the most advertising?

and as long as modding is around there will be ways to get rid of the add wether its ripping them out of the gamecode or scripting objects to apear in front of them etc

(Nail) #43

hmmm, have the ads interactive, two machines, pepsi and coke, which ever gets blown up the most loses and the other gets non-destructible placement, SD could clean up !

no tapirs were hurt thinking this one up

(Societal Eclipse) #44

Is that even legal? If so I better get me some! :drink:

(Joe999) #45

i’ve just been on the activision homepage to check out if there’s something new on their site about quake wars, and found a video about their plans about ingame advertising. tbh: this totally sucks, just check out how distracting this is from actual gameplay:

(Angel1) #46

Hmm im not sure where i really stand on this, i can see where it wouldnt matter as much in games like GTA/Dead Rising where i would normally expect to see advertising and in game it would give it a more realistic feel in other games it a bit different.

I think product placement is in everything these days (films/tv/radio/billboards/trains/buses to name just a few) and i think now they realise that people spend so much time playing games its just a natural next step for them. I know people dont pay good and hard earned money on games to find it full of adverts but in the world we live in its probably a nessercery evil and provides the companys that spend so much money making these games a way of getting a little extra back so they can keep in buisness

(kamikazee) #47

If they could do without, why not try to continue to do so?

If most games start to add advertisements, it gives yet another reason to play WoW where any ad would probably be unacceptable.

(Angel1) #48

Im no expert but it seems like its probably down to the publishers to as why advertisements go into certain games, i think the easyiest publisher to target is probably EA as they have kick up such a s*** storm over 2142 plans recently but if memory serves me correctly the fifa series has been using advertising for years (the boards around the pitch) its a game where you would expect to see adverts and its not offensive but excepted.

I think they do try to keep it to a minimum in most games but its not something thats going to go away and while it causes this generation of gamers to be angry over it the next generation will except it more.

Like wow most mmo’s dont really use advertising either infact the only time ive ever remember seeing it was in the formentioned Planetside and i really would have expected to see some in City of heroes but i guess most mmo’s are a different breed possibly down to the fact you pay via subscription

Anyways personally i still dont think advertisements in games really work

(carnage) #49

tbh in thoes screens i dont realy see the problem as it looks pretty realistic and if there wasnt a thread about it then i might have just acepeted it as being a nice touch to make the place seem more realsitic. same with the fifa series where real advertising only increases the look of the game

my problems will start when advertis start becoming bigger and more anying. when its placement is over emphasised to get atention rather than the nice subtle placements that can often add to the effect of a realsitic look game

(kamikazee) #50

Serisously, I wouldn’t call a bright red sign with “tuna” on it as a subtle ad.

(carnage) #51

well since i work in a shopping center i will tell u it looks pretty ordinary to me

#52

Joe999: I don’t think that suck so bad. That Puma advertisement is kinda annoying, but the Nokia one isn’t that bad at all  Though they could have chosen a better phone to advertise; 3230 (in the pic) really sucks. I have it :frowning:

(carnage) #53

the puma advert only looks so anyoing cos the camera angle is putting as the main focal point of the image, if its just a prop in the side of the shop then its gona look totaly find. however if every time you walk in the shop ur camera start ****ing around trying to show this image as big as posible all the time then its beyond being a nice realsitic adition to the scenery

(Joe999) #54

then go to the activision site and watch the movie. those stills are harmless compared to a movie where everything is grey in grey except for the ads which pop up aggressively into the player’s eye. i see it coming: spam filter for games.

having ads in games like dead rising where you have to use lots of commercial stuff is one thing, it’s the aggressiveness of the ads that annoys me.

i think it’s just another means for the publishers to piss the legal buyers off, so as if the non-working copy protection crap wouldn’t be enough. or does anyone think that it’s fun that during a game the game refuses to continue because it says that you pirated your legally bought game?

that said, i’m curious if activision will put a useless dvd copy protection on quake wars. wouldn’t make sense, but you can never underestimate the non-existing customer friendliness of a publisher. i always have to think back to vivendi and hl2 who caused my sys of BSODing because they didn’t remove the copy protection driver after i closed hl2. and of course a dvd copy protection wasn’t necessary at all because hl2 called home anyway every time i started the game. it’s just to piss the legal buyers off.

(Nail) #55

I find pudding helps

(kamikazee) #56

The sign on the other hand uses a bright(er) red so it actually stands out a lot. And if stands out, it simply doesn’t fit.

(mortis) #57

Just wait until your game has to have a “pure” advertising subsystem to function. It will happen, I promise. Especially if e-sports continue to build into full fledged industries, as they seem likely to do. If e-sports were, say, as popular as the NFL, advertisers would be beating down the doors of software companies to get aggressive product placements. Big money rules the day for big corporations, and they will try to min-max revenue and volume. The ads have to be aggressive enough to please the advertisers and not so overly annoying that they overly curtail sales. In some games, the ads can be placed unobtrusively, but you don’t really look at the ads in those settings, except on a subliminal level. Really obnoxious ads that clutter the screen and force you to look at them are exactly what marketers would use, if they were in charge.

Imagine having to “X” away a popup ad everytime you spawn. How annoying would that be?

(Gringo) #58

As i have said before on this forum and no doubt will be forced to say it again. In the immortal words of Bill Hicks, “Anyone in advertising or marketing kill yourself”.

They be blood sucking fucking leech’s who spend their time coming up with more and more ways(that are extremely irratating to intelligent people) to make us part with our hard earned money for things we dont want or need! Kill yourself and make the world a better place!

NOTE: It doesnt matter who this objective is achieved so long as it quick and probably better if painful as they have caused my brain untold damage by inflicting their shite upon it.

RANT OVER

(vcs2600) #59

I’ve worked in advertising, so please don’t kill me!

And not everyone in advertising is this stupid. Most people understand that you are getting something in return for something with advertising. Nobody would pay for most TV, so people are willing to put up wtih commericals. Same thing with web pages. A magazine would cost $20 without the adverts. For other forms of advertising, there’s almost always an “offer” – $20 Off, Win Something for Free, etc. Otherwise, nobody would bother looking at it. The best advertising is the stuff people are willing to accept.

But the problem here is that EA is trying to get something for nothing, which is stupid, even per advertising-logic. BF2142 is not going to be any cheaper, or any better because it has advertising. It’s going to detract from the post-apocolyptic scenario. Consequentally the ads are just going to be distracting and the backlash against them is going to outweigh whatever sales they might make.

Now, if someone wanted to release a free game with advertising, that would probably work, especially if it fit the scenario.

A bit old, but…

CS 1.6 beta advertising is has been rolled out: http://storefront.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=news&id=968

Petition to get Valve to reconsider (LOL): http://www.petitiononline.com/cs16ads/petition.html

Any fool can read the tea leaves: Source games are next. 1.6 is merely the guinea pig.

I think it’s sad that this is what gaming has come to. It might have made sense several years ago, when half the players in a given game were running a cracked copy. But with anti-piracy measures stronger than ever, and AUTH servers pretty much guaranteeing legit copies online, developers can’t claim lost revenue as justification for this sort of intrusion. And while development costs have certainly gone up, so have retail prices.

I’d [grudgingly] give respect to a developer who did this, if they’d just call a spade a spade. For example:

“We are introducing in-game advertising, because John Carmack has a Ferrari, and we want one, too.”

But of course, Valve can buy all the Ferraris they want already. :frowning:
