Hi, don't sell out like EA did (in game advertising)

(Dangerdog) #1

Yeah that ad is made up but probaby not far off from what they plan to put in the game, right now they only have some 22+ place holder billboards and wall posters spread all over the map in the beta of 2142.

I don’t want to see “Best Buy ads spammed inside the content of movies or the games I play. Imagine watching Star Wars and while their having a shoot out on the Death Star there’s a huge billboard with “Drink Pepsi in the background. :poke:

The Need For Speed Carbon game will have advertising like that, and all of future EA games. Yes it’s true.

I want to hack thier advertisments into displaying PORN

I can’t wait

Ingame advertising is weak. Another reason to shun EA games.
I mean come on, ads are allready invading all aspects of our lifes. Now gaming, too. I can’t support that.

But why is this on these forums? I’m confident that SD will never resort to stuff like this to boost their revenues.

So why am i having the sudden compulsion to start eating a bowl of Ben And Jerrys ice cream, while listening to the Ramones?
By the way have you tried using Firefox web browsers?

It seems that Ads were almost put in quake wars.

Willits later went on to to claim the company considered using advertising in the highly anticipated Enemy Territory Quake Wars video game.

Also im pretty sure the BF2142 NDA still stands so posting a pic probably wasnt the best idea

(Brandon) #6

Hope its only in the Beta!

(Sir. Eden) #7

I don’t think the NDA stands, at least not for the new beta which ive heard from a reliable source (my coding monkey friend) its ever more buggy than the first beta.

As for in game advertising, im am almost certain I heard another company try this and it didn’t go down well at all.

(Hakuryu) #8

I dont mind advertising if it fits in the game, and as long as it isn’t blatant and in your face. For NFS advertising fits… you would see tons of ads driving around in the real world, and it makes the game seem more real than generic knockoffs like MacDonalds or Fepsi.

But in a war torn enviroment I really dont see people putting up billboards.

(The Pope) #9

How could EA possibly sell out? They were always going for the bottom line.

(Eddmarkus) #10

stupid ingame advertising… whats the point anyway? u play game for the fun, not for the ads

(EB) #11

[sarcasm]I think that this will lower the average GLOBAL heart-attack age by 10 years.

…Here’s to a 50% fat burger and lard-sticks !!! ftw![/sarcasm]

(Doeden) #12

Oh no, you broke the NDA…EA is totally going to arrest you…

Give me a break.

(Fab) #13

bah…

(Dangerdog) #14

I got that pic off of a general gaming site

Interesting link you posted though, even id software isn’t beyond the grasp of the lucrative advertising spam-o-rama they’re putting in games. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if Activision presses the issue and makes them put ads in Quake Wars

(BrightSoul) #15

Omg, I couldn’t have guessed Ronald McDonald would be still alive in 2142. But maybe he has been stuffed log ago and just stands there entertaining the children or… soldiers. :eek2:

(SCDS_reyalP) #16

If in game advertising paid for the game (like TV advertising pays for your TV shows) that would be one thing.

To pay full price, and then have ads on top of that is would quite offensive. The only way I wouldn’t find it offensive is if they completely fit the game. For example, if you have a game set in a modern American city, it would make sense for there to be billboards for Burger King, McDonald’s, Bud Light etc. Most games use fake brands for this sort of thing to avoid trademark issues, but if they could get paid for having a more realistic environment, that would be fine by me. Of course, there would be a strong temptation for advertisers to move to more obtrusive ads once they had their foot in the door.

(Nail) #17

have you bought a dvd lately or rented one ?, they’re full of ads at beginning, and not just movie previews, seen a couple Chrysler ads as well

(raztafar1an) #18

I’m a Marketing Major in college on my senior year and so you’d think I’d be more accepting of advertising in general, but I find this stupid and a waste of money for the advertisers. The likelyhood is that these ads won’t be targeted and will simply advertise something that is irrelevant to the game and also the person playing the game. I don’t know what companies have signed up with IGA (InGame Advertising), the firm that EA signed with, but I’m sure a lot of them won’t be related to gaming, battlefield or targeted at all.

(B0rsuk) #19

BF2 know-it-all detected !

(Lanz) #20

Well said. It would actually feel like I’ve bought an advertising program if I first had to buy the game and then had to put up with ads in it.
