Hi all, First post, question.

(Shockwave) #1

Hi there,

I currently run 2 ET servers on a Linux RH system. They both appear to be operating fine, and the box also runs 4 Half Life based servers.

But.

Every 30 minutes or so, randomly one will… pause, is the only way I can describe it. Everyone gets ‘Connection Interrupted’ for about 4-5 seconds, and then the game resumes as normal. I know the HL based servers don’t do it at all (So I’m ruling out the server itself lagging or losing connection), and I don’t think the 2 ET servers do it at the same time, but they both do it.

Nothing appears in the logs, it simply pauses for a moment. Just wondering if anyone may have come across anything similar before, and if so, did they resolve it?

If I can provide any more info, please let me know, I’ll try & throw some details up here. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

[ZeN]Shockwave.

I assume you are running the servers in a “screen”, if you get the “freeze” go into the process (screen -r or screen -x, duhh you know that urselfs  ) and check if you see the following message:

ERROR: Info_SetValueForKey: oversize infostring

----- Server Shutdown -----
Sending heartbeat to etmaster.idsoftware.com
==== ShutdownGame ====
ShutdownGame:

If this is the case you are using too many set commands in your config, remove all the not really needed sets, like sets for admin name/website/email adress etc. etc.

Hi Spookstah,

I don’t think so, I tried checking once before, but I’ll take another look now.

Six server processes on one redhat box seems a little excessive - what spec machine is it?

Do you get the freezes just running the ET servers on their own?

1U Rackmount unit
Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz
1 GB DDR

And yes, it occurs even when the HL processes are shut down (they between them use like 5% CPU anyway… )

:banghead:

Try turning punkbuster off for a while, and see if it still occurs.

(Shockwave) #7

As an aside…

Hitch warning: 25751 msec frame time

Related?

I’m switching off PB now, I’ll see what happens tonight. Incidentally, hello to the Splash Damage guys.

(digibob) #8

Yeah, that will display whenever there is a server frame that takes longer than was expected, for whatever reason, could be a game issue, or a box issue, it’d display regardless.

(Shockwave) #9

Okay, yes.

The servers STOP doing this when Punkbuster is disabled. Wanna let me in on the secret now?

(digibob) #10

It’s punkbuster doing it!

er, er… and well, that’s all i can tell ya, sorry, i just made a guess that it’d be PB causing it, i have no idea why it would

(Spookstah) #11

What PB version do you run?
It should be: v1.038 | A1319 C1.049

If you dont have this version try /rcon pb_sv_update in console to get the latest update if this still doesnt work you can download a update tool at www.evenbalance.com and run it in your /.etwolf/pb directory. (pbweb.x86 is the file name i think)

lol, thanks djbob. Hey, at least I have more to work with now rather than just ‘meh’

Yes Spookstah, the PB version is up to date. Hmmm…
