Help with server

(Ramsgaard [DK]) #1

Hi everyone.

I was thinking of creating a RTCW - ET server. I once had a RTCW server running, but it was awhile ago.

On a 768 kbit line (Out) how many players can I have running? They have to run good.

And any good server.cfg settings I should use?

Also what is the best Server Stat program for RTCW - ET?

think you need approx 5-6 Kb/s / client so take 50 Kbit roughly so you should be able to run a 14 man server - better test this though. Put sv_maxrate on 10000 or so.

server.cfg: check /etmain

statsprog:
http://systats.sourceforge.net/ might be good:

example :
http://et.fragland.net/yukon/index.php?type=xp&order=overall

Is it going to be on a seperate box or your current pc? you do realise to run a server a decent comp is needed, best to be seperate and WILL probably put the biggest strain on the box that its ever had from mem, hd, gfx + bandwidth… theres loads of decent server setup faqs and guides about, and iirc i think theres a brief one in the et manual. imo tho, 10000 max rate and keep at least 10kb per client.

It will run on a box for it self.

Intel P4 - 2.533 - 1 GB RAM. IDE RAID disks.

1-2 players will connect on the local LAN.

The MAXRATE refers to BYTE?

(Sauron|EFG) #5

Yes, sv_maxrate is in bytes.

Keep Number of clients * sv_maxrate below 70000 or so. Reduce if the clients experience lag.

So the number of players would be:

768 / 8 = 96 X 1024 = 98.304 / Max Rate = Number players

Max rate 10000 = 98.304 / 10000 = approx. 10 players
Max rate 7500 = 98.304 / 7500 = approx. 13 players
Max rate 5000 = 98.304 / 5000 = approx. 20 players.

Thanks to all for helping

Yeh that looks about right… Gl with the server and if you using PB, check out www.pbbans.com, and get your logs up! :]

So if I wanted a really good server (maxrate 15000) with 20 players i would need a 2.3 Mbit DSL line.

Hmm. Guess it won’t happen this year :weird:
