Help with Playing Wolfenstein Enemy Territory

(creepster) #1

I’m having some major problems with Wolfenstein Enemy Teritory. Every time I join a game, I can play for about 1-2 minutes before it makes a weird beeping sound (sort of like mic feedback) then freezes my computer(I jsut started Wolfenstein today so I’ve never encountered this problem before). I cannot exit the program or ctrl-alt-delete out i ahve to restart or shutdown my computer. Sometime the freezing even messes with my desktop. If anyone has had the same problem or knows how to fix it please help me. I can run games like Battle for Middle Earth and Star Wars Galaxies so I figure i should be able to run this game.

Thanks a load,

You should try updating punkbuster with pbsetup, found here: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-et.php

If your video card drivers aren’t recent, you should update them as well.

If neither of those solves the problem, it might be caused by overheating or failing hardware.

if it’s overheating or failing hardware, maybe you should try a 3d benchmark program like 3dmark and see if it fails as well.

and then you could also look in the window$ event log, sometimes the files are listed there which cause the failure.

Check and CLEAN all your fans, like cpu, video card, and power supply to make sure they are working properly.

I even oil my fans by removing the sticker and rubber seal, then back together after oiling.

Although, it’s odd you can play other games fine and not ET, which would lead me to believe it’s a software issue.

I downloaded pbsetup, from the link you provided. I’m not sure really how to use this program, it asked if i wanted to add any games? (wolfenstein enemy territory wasnt on the list of addable games) Second, my graphics card and stuff isn’t the newest but i figure if it can handle heavier more detailed games than this (online ones as well) it should be able to play this game. Next i don’t think overheating is the problem because i can usually only play 1 game before it freezes up on me. (this has never happened to any otehr games of mine before.)

Some other details about my problem (ive played like 1 or two matched where it hasnt freezed up) Every time I play witha freind it freezes (sometime it freezes when i dont play with him) and finally I download the wolfenstein enemy territory from downloads.com

Sorry for the hastle and thanks for the help so far. (Ive blown on my fan, ill take it apart later and give it a good clean, but I dont think its the fan being that I am currently playing other games that work fine.

Punkbuster has had specific problems with certian video card drivers, with the symptoms that you describe, so just because the drivers you have work with other games, doesn’t mean they will work with ET.

Locking up after a few minutes of play is very typical of PB problems.

ET is on the pb setup list, it’s called “Enemey Territory”

If you tell use your systems specs, that may help.

While it is slightly unusual, it is certainly possible for failing (or overheating or overclocked) hardware to only fail with some specific program.

Alright I selected Et on the punkbuster thing. As for specs how do i reach them again (is it systeminfo in command prompt) or do I just have to know. (in that case i don’t really remember I didn’t assemble my computer. THanks for the earlier tips

Post.Script ive tried playing since pbsetup with ET selected same outcome ass before

(Nail) #9

beeping noise is usually an indicator of Graphics adapter failure, often due to heat causing overload

Meh I don’t see how it could be overheating, its not like i play on the computer for hours on ends, ive plaeyd other more graphic intense games before for alot longer, and it doesnt overheat. Im guessing it the pb compatability. Thanks alot everyone :), im jsut not gonna bother with it anymore. I don;t want to dmagae my computer with anymore freezing,

I think Shrike had a silmilar problem to this before, if he is around. I think it was driver related in the end. Can’t find his thread atm.

-edit-
Well it was more about stuttering sound, but it may help you anyway:
