“Could not load OpenGL subsystem”

The drivers provided with Windows XP do not include the opengl driver. If you see this error message in the ‘console box’ when trying to run Enemy Territory, 99% of the time, the solution is to install proper drivers, either from the people who made your videocard or the people who designed it - usually NVIDIA or ATI. If you have a normal PC with a normal videocard, I suggest getting the driver from NVIDIA or ATI, as appropriate, but it can be less straightforward with laptops or “videocards” that are built into motherboards. Also see this other topic involving drivers.

After you have updated the video card drivers, rename the etconfig.cfg files, espeically those within your ‘profile’ folders in the ET install folders (this is so they do not take effect and RTCW makes new ones, whilst also keeping a backup of them).

Some other solutions, many of which seem rather unlikely, see Activision support

and witch one must i download :frowning:

(ouroboro) #4

please post your computer specifications: graphics card and/or motherboard specifically

(DG) #5

for windows:

Right-click on “My Computer” icon, select “properties” from the menu that appears, which should bring up a “system properties” window. Click on the Hardware Tab at the top then click the button that says “Device Manager”.

From the window that appears, click the [+] beside “display adapters” and tell us what it say’s under there. Most likely it will say Radeon-something or Nvidia-Geforce or whatever.

(Nail) #6

also, get the 1.02 client patch, your game isn’t up to date
but for sure you need updated video drivers, I see this prob several times a day

i have an geforce 4 mx440

nvidia drivers then, http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp :o

^ be sure to read the instructions etc, particularily the driver installation hints:

Driver Installation Hints

* "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
* Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
* Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Thank you, Forum Dwellers, for a quite extraordinarily helpful and constructive thread of responses. Seems the milk of human kindness still flows even whole days after Christmas : )

One day, all tech support will be like this…
