Problem is, it looks painfully obvious that holding back on the PC updates did more damage than good.
Heads up: Next update for Brink
Oh well…maybe SD will get the weapons right and add brinkTV, more spectating options, improve performance on pc (moar fps) and servers.
The bottom line is the game was the breath of fresh air that the FPS industry needed. I’d instead look at the expectations of the spoiled twenty-somethings as the source of that which drags this game down, largely speaking. Personally I’ll be 40 years old in a few years and I find little to complain about, given that I’ve been through times when games were hell to get running – and that was the norm – let alone play them to be satisfied.
So the miserable naysayers, let 'em sulk. I enjoy the game and frankly it’s never too late for updates. Simply be glad that this far into release you’re still receiving them.

Are you basically saying everyone is spoiled and wrong and the game was fine? Really?

RT1[/QUOTE]Awesome post. So true. Us life-long gamers know what its all about.

This isn’t 1986 anymore. The industry standard has changed. No one is “spoiled” for expecting a product to function properly out of the box when most other publishers seem to be pulling it off.

Or these other publishers. Not sure there is one.
Is that the attitude of young gamers these days? Other people release shoddy products all the time, so that makes it ok! Sad state of affairs indeed… and you didn’t answer his question, is it too much to ask for a working product out of the box?
OK, so the game release was plagued with bugs. Yes, it sucks. No, That shouldn’t be the norm. But at least they’re putting in some effort for those of us that bought it and still like it. It doesn’t matter what the online population is, the people who play SP are just as entitled to an update.
Note also that some BRINK features have already been incorporated into titles such as Battlefield 3, albeit in a weaker form.
You’re telling me you’ve never played a game that didn’t REQUIRE a patch to be playable or fun? Sure most games get an after-market patch or two these days, but most of them aren’t essentially broken until the patch is available. Bethesda is plagued with games that are basically to buggy to reliably entertain yourself with, until they get a million complaints after release and send out a patch. Their business model has pretty much turned release-day buyers into beta testers, which is why I will never buy another Bethesda game again until at least a month after release. And why would you want to rush to defend this practice? I get that you love BRINK the way it is, but don’t let that turn into blind loyalty for anything remotely related to it.

Back when you couldn’t patch a console game almost every single console game worked out of the box. Back in the day PC games would work out of the box. They may have been a pain to get set up with hardware conflicts etc but once they were running they tended to be fine. There were patches for adding more content, addressing balance issues and minor bug fixing.
Accepting massive amounts of bugs and day 1 patching is only supporting getting shafted by a publish. And it is generally the publisher’s fault wanting to hit the market early to rake in as much cash as possible before another AAA game comes out and they shift focus away. Bethesda’s practices are horrible cash grabs that don’t support their games well.
There should be more time spent in QA and polishing the final product. Maybe then the release wouldn’t be mired and the community wouldn’t attach a negative stigma to the game that follows it for the rest of its life.
And The whole “unified front” for patching may seem nice on paper but is terrible in practice. Keep it for DLC maybe, but patching should be up on PCs as quick as possible so that it can be tested and played. The long cert process for consoles means that console patching should be on a longer cycle and fit in as much as possible per patch.
The quicker turnaround time for PC means that it should be used as a testbed with incremental changes constantly adjusting the game. That sort of interaction may have kept the community going a bit longer too. And the ability to quickly try stuff out in the community means that the console patches would be better too since anything that turns out to be a bad idea can be undone before the console patch goes through. At the moment we’re all blind until the patch is released and then it’s too late and will take another 6 month cycle to get another patch.
Looking at the community dropoff I guess that’s not working out so well.
I definitely agree. This seems like a particularly ironic and bizarre mistake given how much the developers were touting netvars as a means of providing immediate balance changes and feedback-- what we got instead was nearly the exact opposite.
Seem to remember in the first month patches/updates weren’t released at same time on each platform, was lots of bickering because x platform got an updates and others didn’t.
YES.
I have to agree with that, although I think my own issues/reasons for stopping playing will never be addressed. A shame really, given the fact that we debated those issues and provided a hell of a lot of feedback, especially with the “one key for all” and the associated target/highlight system. Ah well I definitely do think that incremental patching, along with “test” versions for those who want to get their hands dirty, would have helped in the long run. Anyway, a good post as usual Zen
I’ll be interested to test these weapon tweaks, but without the major things on my list being addressed, I can’t really see myself playing much - I haven’t fired Brink up for months now.
Are there still populated PC servers around?
EDIT: Meh, wasn’t intended to be a negative post - apologies if it reads that way

It’s mostly Campaign servers you’ll find now. With once in a while an Objective and/or Stopwatch server that has more than 3 players. These sometimes actually get 16/16… But more often they don’t.
