Has something changed for high pingers?

(doxjq) #1

I used to find this game honestly fine to play on high ping. Like on a server with 150-200ms I used to be able to play just as well as I could on 30-40ms. Shots were delayed sure, but everything still registered fine and it was still super easy to get kills. The ping was more of an annoyance for things like wall jumping but gunfire was reasonably consistent.

Seems like lately when I jump on west USA servers with 140ms, it’s just feels so much different than it used to. Shots don’t always register, wall jumps fail to collide, reloading or switching weapons sometimes fail to complete, throwing abilities seem to take a strange trajectory (often things like Fletcher nades or Proxy mines will just fall straight down in front of you), enemy players seem to teleport in random directions during battles and things of this nature.

I know high ping will never be perfect, but it just feels a lot worse than it used to. I never used to get any of these random problems I just mentioned. Did something change?

It might not be the game itself or the servers but the routes your isp takes you on to reach those servers that might of changed. This could lead to rage inducing experiences on servers that you previously had no issue with.

I guess that’s a thought. It’s incredibly frustrating but not a lot I can do about it. It ruins the day experience though - At this time of the day we don’t really have servers running so Aussie / New Zealanders playing on USA servers isn’t a rare thing haha.

The reloading and shots not registering was always a thing if you had a great enough delay. People on the Asia servers are having issues with ping as well, so it might be from the last update as well.

And I can confirm that it seems like a lot of my shots are failing to register on people with 100-200 ping now(I still have 60-90 ping myself), making sniper mercs impossible to play because that relies on hit detection and not the bullets going straight through enemies.

It’s possible SD tightened up the netcode so that issues like killing each other at the same time or dying slightly around a corner don’t happen as often. Which would directly impact high ping play.

Or it could be some oddity with your routing where you have a packet here and there going crazy high ping and then back to normal. Which will cause all kinds of weird issues with registration and play. I’m currently on a wireless connection in my new place as I haven’t been able to run a cat6 back to that PC yet and my router has a flaw with the 5ghz connection that causes a random packet here and there to go from 12ms ping to 150ms then back down. When I play DB or any online game connected to 5ghz I get a lot of the issues you described. Luckily the 2.4ghz connection is flawless. I should be able to get a cat6 back there over the weekend so yay.

Heh, I just wrote a post about this before this one. You can always use Resource Monitor to get the IP of a US West DB server then run pings to it to see if you see a lot of fluctuation. It’s a lot more accurate/easy to see issues than the scoreboard that doesn’t update very often. You can hit me up on Discord if you want any help with that. It would only take a few minutes.

Hmm, fair enough.

Happening to me as well with as little as 100 ping (playing from U.S. East on U.S. West servers).

There’s also the issue with lag in terms of FPS drops and stutters. It was always there, very slightly before (no matter what graphics level I played on), but ever since the last bug fixing update, something changed and I get huge FPS drops and lag on every map. Bridge seems to cause a lot more though for some reason. I don’t even have a low-end rig either. I’ve always played this game with high-maxed out graphics.

Anyways, along with the server problems/lag, I get performance lag and FPS drops that’s making the game irritating to say the least. Hopefully these things will get fixed in the near future.

Wait just a second!
You guys consider 120-200 ping high?
Damn thats my normal conection on most local servers. I’m sad now

That’s only because 100 ping is 1/10 second of delay, which is super noticeable, certainly more than if you had 60 ping.

100 ping - 100ms

1 second would be insane. A person makes a full long jump into the fight before anyone can see them, LOL

still very much noticable, with average high skill player reflex ranging in the 150ms range

Milisecond guys 1/1000
100ms=.1 second

Oh, yeah, I’d just gotten home and I didn’t mean that, I know how much a millisecond is. I guess I was tired and something in my brain decided that 100/1000=1.

It’s too late @Nibbles…you are marked for life. Your error shall forever be remembered by all the readers of this forum for all time!

Or we’ll all forget about it in about 10 minutes.

(MarsRover) #14

Do you mean 10 @Nibbles minutes or 10 normal minutes?

A+ man, A+.

That means you’d all have forgotten about it in 10 seconds. It’s been around 12 hours.

It’s not the high ping really that’s an issue. It’s the changing of latency (speeding up or slowing down) that causes missed frames and teleportation. You can compensate for aim, but when frames are lost due to packet losses in transmission, you can’t register a hit.

(Nibbles02) #18

This is actually the case for rubberbanding, not for hit registration. If your connection speed fluctuates, IE you have an unstable connection, then you’ll rubberband and teleport all over the place.

If your ping is just high, say 400-1000, then the server will still register some of your hits even if the person you’re shooting runs around a wall because of the delay, but a large portion of your hits will be delayed or not register at all because packets can be lost indicating that you did indeed hit. With extreme ping levels, such as 800-1000, rubberbanding still occurs but with other players and not you as much as if you had an unstable connection.

I played on a couple servers today, but I’m not sure which ones. I played Execution and Objective for a couple games. Anyways, I was getting a very strange lag. Like really unusual. The gunplay was just offv a lot of the time. My ping is around 30-60, so that’s not the problem.

What made me notice that there was DEFINITELY a lag going on and I wasn’t just sucking ass, is that the voices for the commands were off. I pressed V-2-1 and although the text appeared immediately, the voice was delayed by 1-2 seconds. This was really odd and it’s never happened before. Even weirder is that a couple of instances, Skyhammer’s voice from the commands wasn’t his voice. It sounded like Vassili or Redeye (both of which happened to be in my squad).

I have no idea what was going on and I know I’m not crazy.

Is it still happening, and if so, can you record some of it?
