Gun model

(Ruben0s) #61

My reason for disabling the gun is a cleaner screen, so I could focus more on the enemy.

(Ruben0s) #62

Uhm… If you need to tweak your game through a config, than something is wrong with the game. I never blamed people for using configs, I always used configs, but I also realize that this gave me an advantage over casual gamers( people who don’t know a thing about configs).

(rorgoroth) #63

Sorry then, I am sure I heard someone whining about others configs being unfair here before, just sounded familliar and I am so sick of soo many whiners (especially in et latey) that I just got a short fuse for people who make excuses all the time and blame others… driving me insane slowly but surely

Anyway, I do agree with your point about “…wrong with the game” but I guess there are only so many options you can put in menus without adding confusion and ‘breakage’, maybe no serious stuff hidden in config only sure… fine touches to make things to your taste… I prefer to have those fine/finishing touches options available, I don’t mind to read a little on it and play around

Is there any proof that hiding the gun makes you a better player? I for myself prefer playing without the gun model. If I have any advantages? Not sure but I prefer a clean hud with just basic Info like how much HP do I have and how many bullets are left in my magazin. More i dont need.

(Kendle) #65

What would constitute “proof”? It can only ever be a matter of opinion, and in my opinion it does.

Logical reasoning would suggest if you can see more of the game world than other players, you have an advantage over them (obviously cancelled out if they’re all hiding the gun as well, which on a public server is unlikely to be the case). But that could equally apply if you have FOV 110 and they have FOV 90, for example.

My own experience has shown me that if I aim via the crosshair only (rather than unintentionally allow my aim to be influenced by where the gun model is pointing) my aim improves. I find this particularly so because I’m left-handed and most games draw the gun based on the assumption the player is right-handed. Certainly my aim is noticeably better if I remove the gun, and I say this from 2 years playing RTCW, 2 more years playing ET, and (on and off) another 2 years playing UrT (Urban Terror). How I could prove this to you however, I’ve no idea.
I think your argumentation is not very valid. As Patriotqube said, many in WET and ETQW dont play with gunmodels and many play with gunmodels. I also never heard a complain about the gunmodel.
If its really an advantage, then hide your gun. I personally think, that it is just a placebo. Some want the gunmodel, some dont want it. I hope that SD gives the player the choice what they want to use and what not.
Instead of thinking the gunmodel cvar restriction, SD should think about netsetting restrictions. Abusing the netcode of etqw was too easy and it would be no real problem if some cvars would be protected.
Agree with Kleppy, gunmodel dont give you advantage imho, i play without gun model because its distracts me, but many players feel uncomfortable without gun.

(Kl3ppy) #67

Well, I dont think that you can prove wether hiding/showing the gun improves your aim at general. As you said, its a personal preference. Some want the gun, some dont want the gun. I can speak just for myself, I want a hud that is clear as possible. I just want the basic Info and I dont need a gun model. I cant say if my aim without the gun is better because I turned the gun off at the very beginning of my etqw time. I did this because I have a not up-to-date PC and with turning off the model I was able to increase and stabilize my FPS a bit. And now im used to it. I think I will play without the gun model even tho I buy a new PC.
Forcing ppl to use a setting isnt the right way. SD should give ppl the choice about the gun model. Maybe they give the option to draw the gun on the left side

The problem kendle seems to have is a personal one, if the gun models are too big and cover up the screen which it shouldnt in the first place then, yes, the drawgun will be an advantage. In a normal game with normal fov settings that are not way to small(most console games) the gun should not be that much of a problem.

How to make everyone happy:

Reduce the size of the models that turning the gun on or off would not give an advantage, cause it is way to big in my eyes.(could be the fov settings)

Btw the gun in ET is really small if you compare it to other gamers so i dont understand how you could call it an advantage, except if you are a public player who doesnt seem to understand the difference between config settings that are 100% personal and true skill.

And not to forget almost every game SD made had those changable settings, its not something new so i dont understand the uproar.

If you look at the link posted on the previous page :-

http://www.tweakguides.com/UT3_6.html

There is an option in the UT engine for a small gun model :-

I’m sure that would address most people’s concerns without having to remove the gun completely.

I’d still like to know why there must be an option to remove the gun completely. I can’t help feeling the people who want it are those who currently do it in other games, and I further suspect they do it primarily to give themselves an edge, however small that edge may be.

(Dthy) #70

Personal preference, it’s nothing to do with getting the edge over the competition. Some people are comfortable with not having the gun model on screen on other games and have gotten used to it (as Kleppy said). As for FOV I think it doesn’t apply as I can’t play a game if it a low FOV, I find it extremely uncomfortable to play with and if I can’t change it whatsoever, I will avoid the game completely.

I remember you Kindle! Always a sensible voice in the community

Guess that makes me old…

P.s. I put up with the pain of shooting someone instead of healing them because of the better fov - I thought it was the only way clan players played (but not doubting what people are saying!).

Blimey, Kendle. You used to play with Stun back in the day? We must have played against you guys 10s of times. Good times. You’ll be seeing a few of the old Kaizen guys in DB

(Kendle) #73

Yep, and still in touch with him. He’s into BF3 at the mo’, I’ll be trying to persuade him and some other old timers to give DB a go.

(warbie) #74

Excellent. Call him a nub from me  You never know, they may be enough for a team of old school rtcwers between us all.
