Ah yes this is just before my time, i came along around 2004 and started to play more competitive around 2006. It took ET ages to get properly to play too imo. If ETPro hadnt came around that game would have died out way more quickly than it did now on a competitively basis. Now its mainly Jaymod and NoQuarter if i must believe splatterladder^^
Gun model
99% of the advantage you get from having an invisible viewmodel is a placebo effect.
The 1% is the placebo effect working its magic.
I want the gun to be even bigger on the screen, so you can feel like Godzilla with a gun.
I want the gun to be even bigger on the screen, so you can feel like Godzilla with a gun.
Or a midget with a normal sized gun.
Rather than removing the weapon, I’d be in favor of a FoV slider (which should be there regardless), and possibly a small gun option. I wouldn’t be mad of the idea of removing the gun/hand entirely.
While I understand some “Pr0” players’ desire to remove the model entirely, it’s important to keep the viewers in mind. Everyone involved in eSports should desire to have more people tuning in to match streams. Growing the audience is massively important. Having the hand/gun model will certainly help to grab the attention of those slightly more casual match viewers. It may seem inconsequential to the more hardcore among you, but the lack of any visual representation of a weapon can be a real turn-off for some. A certain other title is struggling with this atm, but at least they have brightly coloured laser beams/pulses. DB is using bullets, which are comparatively less impressive by their very nature.
Get them hooked (or at least avoid them tuning out immediately) with the eye-candy and they’ll stay for the gameplay.
In addition, having a visible gun makes it easier for spectators to see what’s actually going on.
It’s not like if you disable the gun people who spectate you can’t see it.

This is true, but most matches don’t get streamed by the so called pro’s. It’s more likely that some shoutcaster or a server with a special config will stream the match, so disabling the gun shouldn’t be a problem.

Watching players react to stimuli that cannot be seen on your screen is an immensely unsatisfying experience. Having the model switched off on the player’s screen but not the caster’s screen is not a suitable solution for a top end title. Neither is having it switched off on both.
You’ve also got to bear in mind that for actual professional gamers, those who make a living off of playing, many of them are contractually obligated to stream in their “off” time, it’s quite important to them when it comes to earning a living. When doing this, they generally don’t have casters, yet still attract reasonably high viewing figures.
I dont get this discussion:
Some want to play without gun model and some want to play with gun model.
Make a cvar to hide/show gun and its done. If someone casts, he can use a cast cfg with gunmodel. When you spectate someone you still see what is in your cfg and not in the players cfg you watching.
And at first SD should think about the gamers at first and not about streaming and shoutcast. Its a nice feature to have but cutting cvars every game SD made had? Thats crap. Especially when the gun is as big as it seems to be in Dirty Bomb.
Give the gamers the decision if they want to play with gunmodels or not.
i dig the positioning, reminds me of soldier of fortune 2 :o
loved that game
gives the impression that you’re constantly in a combat stance (think swat).
^^
I thought it looked like it is placed high up nearer the face, making it look larger. Perhaps some brain*****ery for more accurate hipfire and less iron sighting. Perhaps it is just like the smooth control of the teaser gameplay video (to make it look like on popular console games, read: fairly low fov)… could be either, or some other reason…
PLACE BETS NOW.
cg_drawgun must be inactive ! all players have to play the same game !
add some cvar but please not to much !
cfg in WofET and ETQW are way to much powerfull to do some “unhitable” , “180° in 1 clic” or “client prediction tweak”
please put all we need in the options menu ! then we dont need any cfg at all ! thx

Hi,
First of all i meant an optional setting to change the drawgun. not forced.
The 180 script was banned, competitively at least. And that script was not that powerful cause really not many people seem to use it on public. You are saying we should all play the same game but thats not gonna happen if you already have a FOV change from 80-90. Eventho thats a small advantage, you could see it like one. With your logic we should all be stuck on 90 fov, 1.6 sens and not being able to change the brightness because you could have an advantage with seeing someone in a dark corner perhaps? There are advantages but they are kinda small.
And what do you mean with saying “all we need”? we all got different needs. If you mean every cvar you would still not change anything since its in game rather than a .cfg file. If you mean a few AA, MSAA sliders and a few standard settings it would not really make (me) people who come from games like ET and ETQW happy since there you got the freedom to play the game how you want and not being forced to anything. And it still comes down to skill and not about who has the better config. So how exactly would you make it in a way that makes everyone happy?
What is the problem of a gunmodel cvar? You can leave it at default and your gun is shown. Dont want to play with a gunmodel? No problem, set it to 0 to hide gun. Nobody forces you to hide your gun…
You missed the point, kleppy. People dont want it cause they seem to think it gives a big advantage over people not using it.
+1
We have it today in WET and i never seen ppl cry about that, i dont use it myself tbh, but i like the idea of having the opportunity
also i cant see why we should start asking for limitations tbh.
I think your argumentation is not very valid. As Patriotqube said, many in WET and ETQW dont play with gunmodels and many play with gunmodels. I also never heard a complain about the gunmodel.
If its really an advantage, then hide your gun. I personally think, that it is just a placebo. Some want the gunmodel, some dont want it. I hope that SD gives the player the choice what they want to use and what not.
Instead of thinking the gunmodel cvar restriction, SD should think about netsetting restrictions. Abusing the netcode of etqw was too easy and it would be no real problem if some cvars would be protected.
If we can’t disable the gun model/change the FOV then SD fans will be heavily disappointed imo.
