It always takes the same amount of time, but you can prime the 'nade without throwing it (press and hold the button), then throw it just before it blows.
Yes, the grenade will always explode after five seconds - just listen for those ‘clicks’ and count them. It’s called ‘cooking’.
Most of the time it’s a good idea to “cook” the grenade a couple of seconds before throwing so that your opponent does not get too much time to run away
All the above posts are lies. The truth is, EVERYONE in ET except for you cheats. They have hacked into the source program and made it so their nades go off immediately.
However, I applaud your high moral dignity in not descending to the level of scum like the rest of us, even at the expense of your (virtual) life!
From the book of Armaments:
And the Lord spoke, saying, ‘First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.’

instant throw/1 sec - booby trap for incoming enemies or quick gib as engineer
2 secs - indirect throw from above (like from bridge down to second tank barrier/tank on goldrush)
3 secs - long partially indirect throw (behind corner)
4 secs - short (in)direct throw
5 secs - /kill
Actually 5 secs can be very interesting when being camped by a more skillful opponent team
