Goldrush madness

(Sauron|EFG) #81

Unfortunately it’s not that easy, and I doubt anyone can release a custom map and comply 100% with the EULA (export restrictions!).

Porting RtCW maps to ET clearly isn’t permitted by the RtCW EULA, but exactly what is it that makes it wrong to modify Goldrush? Decompiling a map conflicts with section 3g, but I thought the Goldrush map file was included (or was that in GTKRadiant? is there something in the Radiant EULA?).

(And no, I’m not defending this madness, just trying to understand. )

As far as I’m aware, things like maps are specifically allowed, same with mods.
Without the actual text to hand I can’t say specifically what is and what isn’t allowed.
Also, the goldrush source ships with radiant for ET and I think there’s a seperate EULA that covers that anyway - it’s been a long time since I installed radiant (thankfully!).
By the same token, you’ll note that to create a mod requires downloading the source, which again comes with it’s own EULA covering what can and can’t be done.

Look at 3.k of ET or 2.j of Radiant: You are not allowed to develop derivate works based upon the software, and the gr-mapfile is a part of that software.

(G0-Gerbil) #84

OK ok, if you want to be pedantic, modifying the goldrush source as supplied with radiant isn’t illegal - it’s expressly allowed.
However, modifying and releasing said new version is illegal.

My aunt is the District Attourney for one of the largest cities in new york, trust me I’ve been around her a lot I know what I’m talking about.
I’m sorry, but firstly do you think we’d believe you, and secondly her knowledge <> your knowledge. Thirdly, someone saying their relative knows all about it is a sure sign they know they are wrong.

Can this thread contain any more stereotypical internet activity?

Yes.

(example of a post count junky ) :blah:

First and foremost I didn’t release the map to the public it was privatly for my clan to play on but someone in the clan submitted it to a map site.

2nd: I don’t care if you don’t believe me about my aunt being a district attourney, it doesn’t really matter because I am right about the legal issues, just do some research and anyone with good knowledge of law (not you, and someone who is not biased) will tell you I am right.

Sd gave us the source map of ‘goldrush’ as a tool: To show us mappers how the scripting, brushwork etc is done… Same reason why when rtcw was released they gave us the map of mp_beach… basically you are releasing a map to the public that someone else created, without their permission…

I’'m not a attourney so I don’t know if it is illegal or not, but stealing other peoples work and releasing it as your own sounds pretty cheap to me…

(Oxygen - o2) #88

yes

BTW it wouldbt be in the news as no1 cares

i agree its ok to do it for personal use, put releasing it public is the reason people hate you!

ignor your clan mates, as they wont be the ones getting sued when you release it :bump:

(NullZilla) #89

well you know what if I get sued i’m just going to kill myself because my life is over if I’m sued anyway.

but i really do think they are plotting to sue me, they won’t return any of my messages unless they really just dont care enough to make a short reply. i mean if they are going to sue me i wish they’d just reply and say yes, for I have enough time to swim to fiji, you know?

anyway this stuff happens for almost every game and nobody ever gets sued especially for a free game I doubt splash damage/id software would be the first to do it either they wouldn’t want an RIAA-type reputation where everybody hates them for being lawsuit-happy. not to mention something like this wouldn’t do well in court. anyway come on SD if you are going to sue me tell me ffs stop ignoring me

and can we let this thread die already stop dragging it on

In terms of a suit, where are the damages to ET owners?
1)the game is given away for free
2)the mod makers charge nothing for it

Hmmm. No harm no foul seems to come into play. Where are the civil/monetary damages?

The other alternative is jail/criminal penalties. Activision and a judge/jury are going to throw someone in jail for modifying a map in a free game? Life penalty!

Also, I have not read the EULA, nobody reads the EULA, those eulas could say I owe them 1000 million dollars in there I an would click yes I accept fully all the above terms. Hmmmm. so really a software company would just have to put out a product, get like 1000 people to use it, make the eula state I will pay say 2000 dollars, and BOOM he sues becomes a millionare. Heh. Right… whoever believes that should try it. If my real estate agent slips in all those forms I sign when I buy my house that I will give him the house for free 10 years from now is that gonna be upheld? Or is the agent gonna be stripped of his liscense for trying that? I dont even recollect clicking yes to a eula in ET installation, and I just redid it recently. Oh well, I guess I will send activision my first born child for playing thier free ET game : ) heh, what I will almost certainly do is pay them for thier upcoming RTCW2 game since they have me hooked on the free ET. I think I should sue them for monetary damages of lost time… Giving away a dangerous addictive substance like ET, its like free samples of crack, with rtcw2 being the kicker you cant help but pay for.

Great contribution herf… I suggest you read the posts in a thread before adding your text, it will prevent you loosing even more of your reputation on this forum.

(NullZilla) #92

reputation on this forum.

reputation with the trolls, huh?

And yeah anyway if SD/ID/Activision Promise not to sue me I promise to buy 3 copies of every game they make in the future (1 for each of my computers!)
