Give SD a break!

(montheponies) #21

I sold my hd4870 and got a gtx460ftw (was due an upgrade anyway), no problems with framerate now. Not saying it’s all ATIs fault, but I’ve alternated between ATI and Nvidia now for over 10 years and always go back to Nvidia as their drivers just seem more generally compliant/stable. Same problem when BFBC2 first came out, 1min to load a map…v 15s if you renamed the executable or turned of ATI AI…seem to recall that took like 2months for ati to sort. anyway kudos for lowering yourself to play on a console in any case :stuck_out_tongue:

sortof j/k before the thread ignites

(tokamak) #22

It doesn’t get close to what a pc experience could be like, but it’s been a while since I enjoyed a shooter.

(Varonth) #23

Yeah, once they nerfed SMGs and Lights into the ground.

I must commend the SD team for releasing such a polished, enjoyable and relatively bug-free game…
…but there is certainly some work that can be done yet to polish the game,

Keep up the good work
Incredible.

It’s a bit of a downer that the staff used their names for the bots I saw a Jolly and an Oliveira and was disappointed they weren’t real.
My internet fixed again now, so we’ll find you!

(RabidAnubis) #27

Do you guys ever get on the PS3? I’d love to play with the Devs! XD

I’m certain Wolfnemesis would sacrifice his children to do it. XD

I’m sort of sad that the Devs never play on the consoles. PC people are lucky!!! :frowning:

Oh well.
This needs to be said, and even if it’s been said before, it needs to be said again.

I’ve been seeing waaay too many people on here with unrealistic expectations of Splash Damage and especially Brink. Most people don’t know the first thing about game development and having some spent some time game programming (as a hobby) myself, game development, and software development in general can be a real pain, no matter how experienced you are. With that fact alone I must commend the SD team for releasing such a polished, enjoyable and relatively bug-free game having the previous experience developing only two other major-release titles on their own (ET and ET:QW).

My second point goes to what I just said, SD is not a huge development studio like IW or id or Bethesda (which published Brink but to the best of my knowledge wasn’t involved in creating it) with 8-10 major releases behind their belt, and I think many are expecting them to be. To give you a better idea, Rahdo said in a recent post “neither Wolf nor ETQW made the company any money, and all of the post release ETQW stuff bled the company dry (SDK and patches)”. So not only did SD create Brink with a smaller-than-id/Bethesda/fill-in-the-blank development team, but they also did so on a limited budget while facing the very real threat that if Brink flopped, SD could have very well gone under. In that same post Rahdo also mentioned the fact that, contrary to popular opinion, Brink has been SD’s greatest success yet. This is why the commonly-asked-for SDK has been out of the picture: it’s beyond their budget.

In the end, I guess I’m just sick and tired of how entitled and voracious many are being. They seem to be set in the mindset that if something’s not perfect, it’s terrible, and every favor SD is doing for the community (like recently releasing the preorder content for purchase) is taken as a slap in the face. Truth be told, I think Brink is a pretty darned good game, certainly the best SD game I’ve played. It may not be for everyone, and there is certainly some work that can be done yet to polish the game, but it, in my opinion, is far from “the worst game of the year” that many are making it out to be.

Keep up the good work Rahdo and the SD team! :)
I’m sure their budget was bigger for Brink than it was for W:ET. The outcome was a game that plays worse than a game they themselves made 10 years ago. Sorry…not acceptable. Acceptable to you maybe…but you are in the minority my friend. Just look at the community for my proof.

No, as we are console gamers, if you can explain what effect to myself saying gg to everyone is, then I shall go pc…

(Crytiqal) #30

saying gg at the end of the match is about being friendly with the rest of the players you just spend 20-30 minutes with.

I dunno how that works on console and the overall attitude over there

Judging from some of the Halo videos I’ve seen you’re meant to use the mic to loudly shout and question your opponent’s sexual orientation while informing them that you may be in line to become their new stepfather as you have been having relations with their mother.

I jest

There are certain things that PC gamers take for granted nowadays (like the post round chat where you can throw in a “gg” or congratulate someone for doing well) that Brink lacks. This is why a lot of PC gamers talk about a “lack of polish” that the console gamers may not have noticed.

Also: the game may be closer to bugfree now but at release there were a high amount of bugs. And there is still friction between the game and ATI. Most likely due to ATI OpenGL drivers (this is a different conversation though) but whatever the source it’s still a bug that exists and prevents people from playing. Again: this is something that console players don’t get to see.

The PC is also the home of the FPS. Any FPS released on PC has a lot to prove if it wants to be called a success. PC gamers are far more critical of their games and when you combine that with the fact that we’re used to games getting major patches for free and we can’t sell on our games if we dislike them (especially Steam games) then you begin to realise why PC gamers shout so much to have things fixed.
We’ve paid for the game and cannot sell it on to pay for another game and we’re used to lots and lots of patches fixing things as they are found. It’s a different atmosphere to a console.

SD has done a pretty decent job on Brink but there are definitely points where they fell short and they have a big name to live up to on PC. Whether the shortcomings were SD’s fault, Bethesda’s fault or simply bad luck and sunspots is irelevant to the outcome: The end product. The only thing that counts from this point onwards is “will we be gettting continued support and more content or will we be getting dropped?”
The answer to that question is important.

yeah…leave sd alone!!!

People don’t say anything because the VOIP is restricted to friends. People may open it to public but because it’s default there’s too little people listening to say a word.

All the matches we set up have publicVOIP set on, so it’s lots of “good game/s” “that was fun”, and laughs over what was funny, fun, exciting, etc over voip… (we dont typically say “gee gee” though.)

Also, we use chatrooms as lobbies, so those organizing rooms sometimes get the post-match gg treatment. (we try and keep it minimal, b/c there are others in the room that weren’t in the game, and the XMB seems to break brink if you use it during the cutscenes)

I like how Zenstar makes a great post and the next one just undoes all the goodness :frowning:

(thesuzukimethod) #36

i should add that console is rife with what zen jests about. i jumped into the resistance3 MP beta last night, and it was profanity, racism, and trash talking, pretty much nonstop. I

i dunno if it’s the smaller community of players that play together a lot (on brink) so , or if it (brink) is attracting a different type of player (older? team oriented?) than your typical FPS (again, on console/PS3, my only experience), or what…i could just be delusional (again).

I do seem to remember a good bit of trash talk + in my QIII days, but perhaps that’s just the inevitability of pub games between faceless opponents.

back to the primary topic: zen you make some great points about the long game of a pc player (cant sell the game, patches are free, dependent on additional development to keep the game fixed (or to render it ‘un-broken’, etc)…a good reminder to console folks who can (sometimes) sell off a mediocre game for about what (or sometimes even more than) we paid for it…

(AmishWarMachine) #37

Agreed 100%.
omfgwtf?!
What planet are you from?

Explain relatively bug-free please… :s

This game is FULL of bugs and what polish you talking about? Have you even tried joining something as simple as a fireteam?

And can anyone type gg at the end of the match? (And I mean AFTER the cutscene)
LOL I am right there with you! This game was not even finished on release and I am a developer. The sound drop issues, the invisible enemies, the falling through walls/floors, the lack of chat, the lack of a decent server browser, the graphics issues many people (thankfully not me) experienced, the massive early lag issues, and so on and so on. Need I really say more?

There is no way that this software went through a rigorous test cycle or quality assurance process, no way in hell. Now that may well be that Beth said times up to SD but still the OPs statement is woefully flawed.

(Dragnerok X) #39

You people’s negativity parade / general bashing of my posts have suceeded in turning me off of Brink. Congratulations.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: In all fairness, this forum has for the most part done nothing but get me angry and frustrated, so I suppose it’s best that I bid you all farewell.

(sereNADE) #40

community members forking over hundreds of their own dollars at brink’s launch all for the sake of a game none of their community members enjoy nor play mere days afterwards. the money we spent would have been better off staying in the etqw donations pool. give sd a break? give us a break. a years worth of hype and excitement is going to take more than a couple months to cool off, especially after all of the group effort and heavy lifting on the part of sd fans (the people that played et titles and supported sd with good faith in brink) hit a brick wall and rudely fizzled out within a week of launch because hardly anybody liked the game and straight up answers were hard to come by. hell, just admin on the server barely got the time of day from sd in the form of support. again, was a group effort by community and fans. all for nothing as many of those servers are canceled. its a two way street, these feelings about brink.
