Give SD a break!

This needs to be said, and even if it’s been said before, it needs to be said again.

I’ve been seeing waaay too many people on here with unrealistic expectations of Splash Damage and especially Brink. Most people don’t know the first thing about game development and having some spent some time game programming (as a hobby) myself, game development, and software development in general can be a real pain, no matter how experienced you are. With that fact alone I must commend the SD team for releasing such a polished, enjoyable and relatively bug-free game having the previous experience developing only two other major-release titles on their own (ET and ET:QW).

My second point goes to what I just said, SD is not a huge development studio like IW or id or Bethesda (which published Brink but to the best of my knowledge wasn’t involved in creating it) with 8-10 major releases behind their belt, and I think many are expecting them to be. To give you a better idea, Rahdo said in a recent post “neither Wolf nor ETQW made the company any money, and all of the post release ETQW stuff bled the company dry (SDK and patches)”. So not only did SD create Brink with a smaller-than-id/Bethesda/fill-in-the-blank development team, but they also did so on a limited budget while facing the very real threat that if Brink flopped, SD could have very well gone under. In that same post Rahdo also mentioned the fact that, contrary to popular opinion, Brink has been SD’s greatest success yet. This is why the commonly-asked-for SDK has been out of the picture: it’s beyond their budget.

In the end, I guess I’m just sick and tired of how entitled and voracious many are being. They seem to be set in the mindset that if something’s not perfect, it’s terrible, and every favor SD is doing for the community (like recently releasing the preorder content for purchase) is taken as a slap in the face. Truth be told, I think Brink is a pretty darned good game, certainly the best SD game I’ve played. It may not be for everyone, and there is certainly some work that can be done yet to polish the game, but it, in my opinion, is far from “the worst game of the year” that many are making it out to be.

Keep up the good work Rahdo and the SD team!

cool story, bro.

It’s just that these other companies are giving SD a run for my money. Same price, less frustrating game.

omfgwtf?!
What planet are you from?

Explain relatively bug-free please… :s

This game is FULL of bugs and what polish you talking about? Have you even tried joining something as simple as a fireteam?

And can anyone type gg at the end of the match? (And I mean AFTER the cutscene)

Everyone has a right to express them self(expet if a moderator “disagrees with it”) what they did is good, but not good enough they should be playing more with netvars and see how it goes, and they sould give the community a higher priority, also most of what happended is bethesda’s fault they deiced most of the choices(like the release date).

It’s not unrealistic expectations, we saw it at E3.

It’s even on their official website!

The sharks smell blood in the water and they will come from miles around…

Thanks for the review, but it doesn’t look my kind of post… skipped!

(Crytiqal) #8

Someone is butthurt he didn’t make the first reply on a SD thank you thread

(Verticae) #9

Yeah! Give SD a break! And leave Britney alone!

Seriously, though: A lot of us see major issues with Brink. We post what we believe solutions to this. If SD doesn’t want to fix it, can’t fix it, or is otherwise prohibited from polishing up Brink to the level that their fans and customers expect, they can say so.

Edit: Holy ****, I thought I broke the thread before realising the icons changed. :B

I think the main problem is the user interface. The usability of the user interface is a step back from ETQW and ET.

[QUOTE=Verticae;373876]Seriously, though: A lot of us see major issues with Brink. Or they are simply the same old, tired hate-thread with a new coat of paint. There are a litany of posts/thread on this board that are exactly that.

Conversely, of course, there is also a litany of blindly positive posts/threads as well… but we can only shorten the leash on Wolf so much.

I’m currently finally experiencing Brink as it should work. . Really the console version has an ET vibe. Similar things and so. Still diluted, but hey I can deal with that. It’s a very good console game. My floormate bought it so it’s not really mine, he stopped playing it from the start (after the issues). But yeah, some very good games. Still very straight forward, you can’t think up creative things like in ET but it’s a much more substantial shooter than any other console game.

In a way it makes the lack of proper pc, and in my case, lack of ATI support all the more frustrating.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t played online much, or because I’m running with a NVIDIA card, but while there are a lot of small-medium annoyances I’ve run into, I have yet to see anything game-breaking. The fact that this forum is still active and tournaments are still being held is a testament to that. I can understand how some are frustrated though, but I’m sure many of those issues will be fixed with time.

In all seriousness though, we must all have good lives if the best thing we can complain about is a video game.

(Verticae) #15

Excuse me what? There’s no active competitive teams anymore, how the hell would anyone hold a tourney?

AmishWarMachine: True, I suppose bethesda could be holding the leash pretty short.

I could have sworn there were, but in any case you can ignore the nonsensical parts of my ranting. I’ve had a long night.

Tokamak, you have it on Xbox or the PS3?
I am thinking about getting a copy for the PS3, but I already bought an overpriced PC version at launch…

(tokamak) #18

It’s the Xbox 360. The name is Naysar and i’ll be online more often this week.

It’s a bit of a downer that the staff used their names for the bots I saw a Jolly and an Oliveira and was disappointed they weren’t real.

(Crytiqal) #19

Ah :frowning: I don’t have an Xbox, but I might just get a copy on PS3 just to kick EGM’s ass :stuck_out_tongue: They seem like fun
